Match report The 1st XI got off to a winning start against Electricity Sports at Victory Park.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Popes and Hursty set about giving the 1s a good start. This duly arrived, as good balls were kept out and bad ball despatched. After reaching 33, Popes was given LBW and was quickly followed by Rob O'Dell to one that kept low. When Hursty played over the top of a straight one, the 1s were in a rather precarious 54-3 after 12 overs. Enter the two Steves, Wagstaff and Bayliss. Playing watchfully at first, both took advantage of some indifferent bowling to post a partnership of 90. Waggy looked good for his 15 before attempting to smash the spinner out of the ground but the initiative had been wrestled back. Bayliss compiled an excellent 75 before holing out on the boundary, a great innings consisting of 8 fours and 3 sixes. Some late order hitting from Dawks and Nico meant the 1s set a more than competitive 225-7, but Dawks pulled up with a serious calf injury.

The Elec Sports innings started strongly, reaching 90-0 off 18 overs as Hursty, Tom and Gus struggled to find a consistent line and length. Taking pace off the ball was the order of the day, with Andy Gray coming on at the pavilion end to great effect. With Roger Cook on at the other end, the initiative went back to the 1s as Roger & Andy dismissed both openers, the 2nd to an excllent catch by the skipper. The key wickets were that of Carolan and Deacon, and Steve Wagstaff was brought into the attack. Carolan went to a poor shot, caught by Cooky at mid-wicket and this was followed by a run-out from Andy Gray. When Waggy dismissed Deacon 1 ball later, Elec Sports were struggling at 121-6. As the run-rate increased, so did the pressure and Waggy & Roger mopped up the tail to finish with 4 wickets each.

Overall, a very pleasing start to the season. Cosby 24pts Elec Sports 5pts
