Match report 06 May 2010 : 1st XI outplayed at Syston But Hang on for the Draw!

MATCH REPORT: Syston II V Cosby, Saturday 1st May 2010

With the sun out and the wicket dry winning the toss and batting first would normally be the order of the day but with the threat of rain Pople elected to bowl first.

In hindsight it was the wrong decision but in truth Cosby didnt bowl or field anywhere near the levels needed. Matt Hurst and Debutant Nazir opened up but both struggled with their lines and regular boundaries kept coming. The Syston Openers Drake and Mann-Kler took full advantage with some aggressive batting and the scoreboard was rocketing along.

Hurst got the breakthrough with a good caught and bowled but a double bowling change came about soon enough with Sherriff replacing Nazir and The Undertaker replacing Hurst. This change should have brought immediate rewards but Sampson spilled 2 relatively straight forward chances to let Syston off. The second drop lead to a broken finger for sampson who is now out for 6-8 weeks!!

Cosby, forced to field again with 10 men (perhaps the captain should ensure that the 1st XI has a 12th man) (who can also be the scorer) toiled in the condiditions and although wickets fell regularly the runs kept flowing!! To their credit Gray 12-0-46-3 and Wagstaff 17-3-62-2 worked hard but the fielding let them down! Cookie compounded the poor display by getting hit for 50 off 6 overs although he perhaps should have had 3-25!!

The Tea interval gave Cosby the opportunity to re-think the strategy and hopefully bat much better than they had taken to the field!

Unsuprisingly this was not the case as first Hurst then Pople and Bayliss threw their wickets away plying unecessary shots and Cosby were 30-3!

Odell and Wagstaff started the recovery but when Odell was caught for 41 the writing was on the wall. A series of 'questionable' decisions from the home team umpire followed, first Wagstaff LBW, then Gus was 'caught' behind and Baz was also given out LBW to a ball that looked more likely to threaten leg slip than the wicket keeper!!

Cosby were in all sorts of trouble at 107-8 off 34, leaving Cook and Gray to bat out the last 11 overs to salvage the draw! to their credit they did so very comfortably and nearly got us an extra batting point but the innings closed on 129-8.

RESULT: Losing Draw

POINTS: Syston II (19) Cosby (5)

MOM: Difficult as not many plus points but Andy Gray bowled pretty well and performed sensibly with the bat to ensure the draw!

VERDICT: Hindsight is a wonderful thing but Cosby were Very Very Poor!!
