Cosby Cricket Club Lost by 29 runs (5pts)
Match report
The one that got away......as the 1st XI blew the best chance to beat the League Champions, Sileby II in their own backyard.
On a bright & wam day, Sileby won the toss and elected to bat on flat and hard track. Mikey White and Brett opened up and bowked some tight lines as Sileby got off to a steady start as 30 came off the opening 10 overs. As the ball softened so scoring got easier and the 100 partnership came up in the 22nd over as things began to look ominous.
As usual, the drinks break allowed the 1s to re-group and the introduction of the spin twins earned the breakthrough. Roger enticed Charity down the wicket and was duly stumped by Nico. This slowed the scoring rate as Loveridge and Dudley stuggled to regain momentum. The returning White snaffled Dudley, caught behind for a well made 65 and Roger then had Loveridge caught by Mikey for 32. When Kinch went for 2 and Bourke for 4 (by a good catch by Laney)the 1s had recovered well. Only some late hitting by Ruddle and Ellis took the innings beyond 200 and the 1s were well satisfied with their efforts on a great batting wicket.
After a good tea, Waggy and the captain opened up against the Premier division experienced Ellis and Hackett. After a watchful start, Waggy hit a couple of 4s before Ellis had him caught at mid off. Enter Charlie who took to the bowling like a duck to water. In a partnership of 87, he and the skipper got the home team nerves jangling. It took the introduction of the youngest player on the park to get rid of Charlie, caught at cover off a backfoot slap which clearly disappointed him for a brilliant 62 from 42. This brought Odell to the crease and he busily began to up the rate. Bourke finally removed the skipper as he mis-read the arm ball and Steve Bayliss came in and made batting look easy from the off. At the 30 over mark, the 1s needed 72 with 7 wickets in hand. The excitement was building, but that was as good as it got...............
What followed can only be described as disappointing as much as it was ridiculous. Odell was run out when being sent back by Bayliss for a leg bye. Bayliss himself was run out attempting a tight 2 to Ruddle on the boundary. This made it 171-4, still needing 5 an over. Podge came in and was joined by Dawkins as Sileby re-introudced the impressive Ellis into the attack. Dawkins went 3rd ball, bowled by a full and straight Ellis delivery. 2 balls later, he was joined in the hutch by Mikey who feathered one behind. Brett faced the next ball and was duly bowled by a full, straight one leaving Nick to face the hat trick ball, which he did only to be bowled behind his legs. With 7 overs still to bat, Podge hit a couple of 4s before he became Elis' 6th victim leaving the 1s bowled out for 182.
A great chance to piddle on the promotion party had been lost. The game had been there for the taking, but a lack of fight, bottle and bravery had ultimately proved costly. You can't doubt the quality of the Sileby team but we were equal if not better for 75 overs of the game. When it came to the crunch, the 1s were found to be mentally weak and if we are to make the next step, we must finish off games like that, the 4th we've blown this season. The unbeaten run has ended but we were oh so close to the win..............
Onwards to next week.
