Match report 26 Apr 2010 : Positives and Negatives as 2nd XI hang on for draw at Quorn

Quorn II vs Cosby II, 24th April 2010

The C2 Unit were in confident mood as they travelled to their first fixture in their new division against what looked tough opposition in Quorn who had finished 4th last season. When the 2s eventually all arrived at the picturesque ground the confidence was clearly in evidence during their somewhat unorthodox warm up involving a football, rugby ball and Goks aerobie (at least until Trig lost it getting it caught on a branch of a tree 20 feet up). The skipper also took the Unit for a stroll around the boundary to discuss his tactics for the match and season.

Woodys fortune at the toss from last season deserted him as he slipped up and went and won it and decided that the 2nd team would carry on last seasons successful tactic of fielding first. On his return to the dressing rooms he attempted to address the 2s with one of his trademark inspirational team talks, all accompanied by Grice humming Jerusalem. With the message of remaining patient delivered the 2s took to the field and last seasons talisman Big took the new ball alongside the veteran skipper. Things got off to a dicey start despite Big Phils frugality as the Quorn opening bat took a liking to Freds brand of medium pace as he deposited him regularly to the boundary. Regardless of the early boundaries the run rate never really got too out of hand and when Big bowled the younger of the 2 Quorn openers and then in the next over Richard Fairbrass wannabe Paul Wood bowled the other the 2s appeared in control with Quorn 32 for 2 after 8 overs.

The 2 quick wickets forced Quorn to dig in with the 2 batsmen Ismal and Brewin doing so quite successfully with a mixture of defiance and further big hitting especially from Brewin. With the 2 batsmen building a handy partnership Veteran Skipper Paul Wood decided to take himself off and brought on the orange haired Trigger at the Road End. Despite a few wayward deliveries Trig managed to get a breakthrough when Brewin hit a full toss to Frank at long on who took a smart catch. Quorn were 90 for 3 after 20 overs and the game was in the balance as their somewhat disingenuous captain Reynolds came out to the crease. Big was replaced at the Billso on the boundary end by Oddsocks and the young leg spinner started well finding his line and length from ball one. At the road end Trig was replaced by Treacle Feet and he and Curt both bowled in good areas, despite this Reynolds and Ismal went about their business with due diligence keeping out the good balls and punishing any bad balls. The scoreboard started ticking along quite steadily due to a combination of decent batting, a good track and a fast outfield. Curtis had a very adjacent looking lbw appeal turned down and the Quorn batsmen continued to frustrate the C2 Unit with multiple shots going in the air but just eluding the Cosby fielders.

The score had been pushed on to 147 after 30 overs and the 2s looking like having to chase down a big score and at this point Usain turned up at the ground to lend his support the toiling 2s. He proved to be a bit of a lucky charm for the Unit as soon after his arrival TF was able to remove the Quorn skipper edging one behind to wicket keeper Russ “Lily Savage” Sullivan. The dismissal of Reynolds sparked the C2 Unit into life as a couple of overs later Oddsocks bowled Ismal for a well deserved wicket. The wickets continued to tumble as Dave was able to pick up another couple, getting 2 in an over as he finished with the excellent figures of 8 overs for 30 runs picking up 3 wickets.

With Quorn now 170 for 7 Woody made another double bowling change with Frank on for Ned and Gandhi on for Oddsocks. The move once again paid dividends as the pair polished off the Quorn tail with Thorpey picking up 2 wickets for 1 run and Ben “Earl” Spencer getting the final wicket meaning the 2s had bowled out Quorn for what appeared a below par 181 in 42 overs.

The 2nd XI went off the pitch relatively pleased with themselves having restricted Quorn to 181 when at one stage they thought they would be chasing well over 200. The mood improved even further when they went in for tea and were presented with what will surely be the tea to beat in the Tea of the Season championship. Ham salad pitta breads, pizza, pasta, potato salad, fruit and an array of cakes that would have done Mr Kipling proud, this was definitely a contender. Having gorged themselves on tea the Unit had further good news that City had secured a place in the play offs and even the skippers beloved Sunderland had won. During the tea interval Veteran also presented the shirt to replace the “All the gear, but No idea” shirt. This years effort is a nice orange number with the words “I swing both ways” emblazoned across it. The first winner was Trig for not only losing the Tiddly Winks aerobie but also the fact it was the same colour as his hair.

The 2s went out to bat with Cindys Baby Girl and Grice opening the innings. The pair got things going in good fashion playing the Quorn opening bowlers with what appeared relative ease. Vice was looking in especially good touch punishing any of the loose bowling that came his way. Quorn made a change at the Billso on the boundary end bringing on their young left arm spinner Watts but the runs continued to flow nicely. The partnership between the lookalikes made its way to 50 off 15 overs when it was eventually broken as Russ hit a ball from Watts straight to the man at mid off for a well made 31. 50 for 1 soon became 50 for 2 as in the next over Grice was caught and bowled for 11. The game was back in the balance with Gok and Umar at the crease and at this stage the run rate became a bit pedestrian as both Nige and Thorpey struggled to get the bowling away. Gandhi soon became the 3rd member of the Unit to lose his wicket playing all around one from Watts with the score on 70. Next man in for the 2s was Frank who started in positive fashion hitting his first ball for 4, however his positive start was not maintained as he became Watts third victim when he was stumped for just 7. The game was now well in the balance at 79 for 4 after 25 overs.

It was around this time the members of the C2 Unit not out in the middle got temporarily distracted from the cricket as Trig made his attempt to get Goks aerobie back from the top of the tree. Armed with a step ladder and a broom he set about his task. Needless to say his first attempt proved unsuccessful and he went out to find something longer to hook the aerobie down with. From somewhere he found what appeared to be a tightrope walkers pole and ably assisted by Thorpey he was able to get Ho Chi Minh his aerobie back.

Back on the pitch Treacle Feet had joined Gok at the crease and looked in fluent form from pretty much his first ball. The pair went about their business in good fashion with Neddy in particular taking a liking for the bowling of Watts. However from the other end Quorns senior member Redfern was proving difficult to get away bowling a very tight 7 overs for 8 runs. The score had moved on to 114 when Gok became the 5th man out getting caught behind for a patient 19 runs. This wicket brought Veteran Skipper Paul Wood to the middle and the 2s still believed the win was very much possible needing 68 runs off 14 overs with Dave looking in good form. It was at this stage the game turned decidedly in Quorns favour when Dave played a ball to square leg and took off without checking if Woody was coming back the other way. There was never a run there and Dave was sent back but didn’t make his ground and was run out for a very fluent 26. This was a body blow for the 2s as it was TF that looked like he was going to win the game for the Unit.

A couple of overs later the problems were compounded for the 2s as Woody became Reynolds first victim falling lbw for just 8. This left the 2s 126 for 7 with 8 overs remaining. Curt and Big were at the crease and the 2s were hoping that Big could have one of his good days with the bat and get the 2s back in touch. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be the case as he became Reynolds 2nd victim when he was bowled for just 4. The 2s were now 8 down and survival became the order of the day. Trig was in with Oddsocks and the 2 youngsters played out the remaining 4 overs with few scares to be honest as the 2s eventually closed out the innings on 140 for 8 to secure the draw.

Result: Losing Draw

Points: Quorn 16 Points, Cosby 8 Points

Tea Rating: **** A definite Tea of the Season contender

Quote of the Day: Regan Henshaw was going through his dads kit bag and found his box;

Regan: Look its your winky protector!

MOM: A few people put in decent performances with Curt bowling well and Russ starting the season in good form with bat. However with 3 wickets and a good innings of 26 MOM goes to Dave Needham.

Verdict: A mixed day for the C2 Unit at one stage looked like chasing a mammoth total but fought back well with the ball to restrict a good Quorn side to 181. Also started well with the bat but the strangling of the run rate in the middle of the innings left the 2s with too much to do. Not the best start but could have been lots worse. Proof if proof were needed that Division 6 is a lot tougher than Division 7.
