Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI v Electricity Sports II on Sat 01 May 2010 at 1.30pm
Cosby Cricket Club Lost 5 Wickets

Match report 06 May 2010 : First defeat since 2008 for C2 Unit following batting horror show

Cosby II vs Electricity Sports II, 1st May 2010

The 2nd XI assembled at the Cosby Oval with a few different faces on display to the previous weeks outing against Quorn. Out were The Cow Whisperer, Umar, Grice and Trigger and in their place came father and son duo Neil and Tom Measures, Whitey and following his heroics against Lutterworth the previous week in the cup Calypso Cox.

With Right Said Fred tribute act Paul Wood still mulling over the previous weeks performance the “I swing both ways” t-shirt went without presentation due to apparently more than 1 member of the C2 Unit having done enough to wear it this week. With thoughts of making amends for the previous weeks disappointing draw Woody went out for the toss and his usual form with the coin returned as he promptly lost it. It was no surprise that Electricity Sports invited The Unit to bat considering the inclement weather during the week.

Game 2 of the season clearly means opening partnership number 2 as Cindy’s Baby Boy/Girl and Korea’s finest cricketer went out to open the innings. With the skippers words of err...encouragement, yeah we’ll go with encouragement, about batting positively ringing in their ears Gok and Lily went about their business with good intent. The pair had moved the score up to 20 with Vice in particular looking in fluent mood again after hitting an early boundary. However the early good signs proved to be false as the pre-op was soon bowled for just 12 playing what can be best described as a cross batted swipe. In at number 3 was Dangerous Dave Needham and once again he started in positive fashion hitting early runs, but once again the early signs bore false promise as Treacle Feet was caught at point after hitting a half tracker pretty much straight up. The 2s were 28 for 2 after 10.

Keen to make up for his previous weeks low score Veteran Captain Paul Wood came in at number 4 but it wasn’t to be as he soon departed for just 1 (and we’re not sure he hit that) when he forgot to use his bat again and was once again given out LBW. At this point the 2s needed a hero and in at number 5 came Calypso Cox fresh from his maiden 50 for the seniors the previous week in the cup. With the 2s in a tight spot perhaps what wasn’t called for was Coxy to come out swinging his bat like Babe Ruth. A few lusty blows raced the score along briefly but Calypso soon became the 4th man out having made just 8. The 2s now looked in serious trouble at 50 for 4 off 16.

All the while wickets had been tumbling at the other end the Tiddly had been putting together a half decent innings on what was looking an increasingly difficult track to score on (though not as difficult as the 2s made it look). He wore a few, blocked a few and when the chances came his way was able to score runs off the bad balls. Tom Measures came out to join him at the crease and the pair started looking like they might be able to repair the Cosby innings. The score had been moved on into the 60’s when Kato became the 5th member of the C2 Unit on his way back to the pavilion when he was caught behind for a hard fought 29. This brought together a father and son batting combination in the form of Neil and Tom Measures and the pair made a good fist of trying to repair the Cosby innings. A combination of solid defence (mostly Neil) and good hitting (to be fair mostly Tom) saw the score begin to start tick over again and the rest of the Unit began thinking of a total that was defendable, with the majority thinking any score over 150 would be tough to chase. The scoreboard ticked over to 98 off 28 when the 2nd XI lost their 6th wicket when Senior Measures was bowled for 12 runs.

The departure of Neil saw Whitey stride out to the middle for his first bat of the season and to be quite honest you could tell when he was bowled for 5 having a Coxy-esque swing whilst appearing to be looking at one of the Seagulls he is so keen on saving. At this point the Cosby innings began to collapse around their ears as the run rate slowed right down to a crawl and wickets continued to fall. Oddsocks was soon dismissed to become the first entry in to this years Duck Cup and Tom Measures soon followed him when a ball stopped on him and he was caught and bowled for an impressive 29. The 2s were 9 down with 115 on the board and Big and Frank at the crease. The pair are both more than capable batsmen but both are usually more use giving it some big willow than batting out overs. However the pair batted very conservatively and protected their wickets at all costs. It could be argued they should have tried the opposite and had a swing as it may have got us a few extra runs as with the low total posted a drawn game always looked unlikely. The pair nudged the Unit up to 126 in the 44th over when Ben “Earl” Spencer was caught at mid off for 5 to become the 2nd XIs last man out. The 2s had been bowled out inside 45 overs and the unbeaten streak was in jeopardy.

The 2s went into tea knowing they had let themselves down with the bat although moods were lifted by the excellent Cosby tea (loving the Pitta breads) and the news that Billsos beloved Villa had been cruelly denied a champions league place by losing at Man City.

The C2 Unit took to the field in the knowledge that they were going to have to bowl and field out of their skins if they were to have any chance of defending their very meagre total. The skipper went with a little and large bowling combination with Big and Stumpy sharing the new ball duties. Things started in mixed fashion for the Unit with both bowlers putting the ball in decent areas and one of the Electricity Sports openers was having real trouble with Whiteys pace. However the other looked in decent touch as the score board ticked along. The breakthrough appeared to have arrived when the first of the 2 opening batsmen got a leading edge off Whitey and the ball looped to Calypso at cover. Coxy walked in confidently got both hands to the ball and promptly grounded arguably the easiest chance the Cosby Oval will witness this season. The mistake was further compounded a few overs later when Big spilled a relatively simple caught and bowled attempt. Instead of being 20 for 2 off 10 Electricity Sports had progressed to 30 for 0.

Whitey soon managed to take the first Electricity Sports wicket when he bowled a relatively ordinary delivery that appeared to be swotted by the more fluent opening bat to the boundary. However at cover was Gok and he flew through the air using all his Chinese acrobat training and took a great diving catch. Frank replace Whitey at the Right Said Fred End and Tom Measures came on at the Drunk On The Bench (mysteriously absent, maybe he’s on the wagon?) End. The 2 young left armers both bowled reasonably well but with such a low total to chase the 2 Electricity Sports batsmen could just dig in and wait for any loose deliveries to arrive. The next wicket did not arrive until the score had reached 70 off 22 overs when Frank pushed one through a bit quicker to remove the opening bat for a well deserved wicket.

After drinks the skipper decided a change in bowling was needed and decided to bring himself on at the Frank Spencer End. To be fair to the skipper he bowled better than his figures suggested as chances eluded fielders due to a combination of poor luck and poor judgement. At the other end Oddsocks was brought on for Tom Measures and the C2 Units spin king once again came up trumps as he was able to pick up 2 wickets to further his good start to the season with the ball. Unfortunately this was all just a little too late for the 2s as Electricity Sports had progressed to 115 for 4. As a last throw of the dice Whitey returned at the Frank Spencer End and Dangerous Dave Needham was given a go from the DOTB End. Dangerous was able to pick up a wicket in his 2nd over to leave Electricity Sports 5 down but in the following over they were able to knock off the required runs they needed for victory.

Result: Lost by 5 wickets.

Points: Cosby II 3 points, Electricity Sports II 24 points

Tea Rating: *** Usual high Cosby standard

Quote of the Day: During the Cosby Innings there were a number of people around with their dogs:

Billso: This is like an all you can eat buffet for you Nige!

MOM: Slim pickings this week with few people putting in decent performances. Gok batted well and took a good catch however MOM goes to Tom Measures who batted well to top score with 29 and also bowled a tidy 6 over spell.

Verdict: A pretty abject performance with the bat meant the 2s were 40 runs below a decent score. Fielding wasn’t brilliant either with a couple of chances put down but 126 was never going to be enough. A shame the unbeaten record had to end with such a whimper but going undefeated for so long should be a source of pride. However that is all now in the past and if the 2s want to be competitive in the division batting needs to be a lot better than this.
