Match report 2nd XI slump to 6 wicket defeat against Outwoods

Loughborough Outwoods vs Cosby II, Saturday 5th June 2010

After the previous weeks washout against Melton the C2 Unit turned up against another 1st XI in the shape of Loughborough Outwoods. After a strong performance against Hinckley a fortnight ago the 2s were in confident mood and with pretty much a full strength squad to pick from the confidence appeared well placed. Pre match the Rabbit T-Shirt needed presenting and after his score of 0 last time out Vice took the honour this week. Veteran Captain Paul Wood went out for the toss and once again maintained his record as he promptly lost it. However he wasn’t too disappointed when the Outwoods skipper decided to have a bowl bearing in mid it was a hot day and the track looked decent.

The 2s opened the innings once again with Vice Captain Russ “Lily” Sullivan and Korea’s finest export in Gok backing the pair to return to form after an unproductive outing against Amateurs. However things got off to a bad start when Russ got bowled off the last ball of the 1st over to record his 2nd consecutive duck. With Russ departing early it was vital the 2s dug in and re-built the innings, but there was a sense of De Ja Vu all over again when Jackie Chan was bowled 2 at the end of the 3rd over and the Unit were 5 for 2. The 2 dismissals once again meant Umar and Neil Measures were faced with the task of rescuing the Cosby innings and once again the pair appeared up to the task with Thorpedo looking especially fluent. The pair had taken the score up to 36 in the 10th over when Gandhi became the third Unit member to be dismissed when he was out lbw/caught for 17. In at number 5 was skipper and Right Said Fred wannabe Paul Wood and he and Neil took the score up to 50 before Neil chipped a delivery to short leg for 16 and the 2s were 50 for 4.

Whilst all the carnage was going on in the middle Billso and Calypso Cox were conducting an important psychological test using an optical illusion by Sigmund Freud. See the attached picture, what can you see? If you can’t see the woman you’ve failed. Amongst the 2nd team there was only one failure in the shape of Curtis, what this tells us about Oddsocks we’re not sure but the rest of the 2s were eyeing him suspiciously. Back in the middle Coxy had joined Fred at the crease and despite a good start hitting his 1st ball for 4 he was soon back in the pavilion after being well caught, although the shot he played was not the cleverest. The score had been moved on to 60 when Woody went after a slightly wide delivery and nicked one behind having made 13. Big was at the crease and was joined by Tom Measures although this was only for 1 delivery as Tom was lbw for a golden duck.

This brought together Big and Oddsocks and it was this pairing that offered a bit of resistance with Curt protecting his wicket and after playing himself in Phil started hitting out as the Outwoods bowling briefly became slightly wayward. The score had moved on to 93 when Phil went for one shot too many and was bowled for 30 which was easily the best innings played by a Cosby batsman on the day. Having eventually shaken off his hangover Whitey was in at 10 and he was soon joined by last man Billso as Curt was caught at slip for just 1. The 2s were 97 for 9 with the last pair instructed to try and get them as high a score as possible. With Billso blocking at one end Whitey started playing a few shots and hit a few boundaries. Billso even briefly joined the boundary hitting fun when he guided/edged one down to third man for 4. The innings eventually ended with the score on 120 when Stumpy hit one straight up to get caught for 17 runs.

The 2s had been bowled out in the 34th over meaning they were going to have to go out and field for 11 overs before tea. The 2s went out to field with Woodys words ringing in their ears of fighting for everything and making it tough for Outwoods and hopefully taking a few wickets as well. Whitey opened up from the pavilion end with Big sharing the new ball with him from the bottom end. Whitey started in reasonable fashion using all his 5 foot physique to generate some decent pace. However at the other end Big was struggling with his line and length meaning Outwoods were able to get off to a bit a flyer. The breakthrough eventually arrived for the 2s in the 8th over when Phil bowled the Loughborough opener for 10 as Loughborough were 40 for 1. Umar was brought on for Whitey at the Pavilion End but unfortunately the Loughborough number 3 took a liking for Thorpeys brand of medium pace with his first three deliveries disappearing for 2 fours and a six. However with the 4th ball of the over Thorpey got him out as the number 3 played one big shot too many and was caught by Whitey at mid off who mis-judged it but then stuck his left hand up and held on to the catch. A couple more overs followed but the 2s went in to tea disappointed with their efforts so far in the field as Outwoods were 59 for 2 with their opener 30 not out.

The 2s went for tea looking to cheer themselves up for an improved effort with the ball when they went back out to field. With the gallows humour in evidence the 2s enjoyed what was a decent tea and renewed themselves to get as many points as possible as they re-took the field with Woody one again urging them to keep fighting as there were still over 60 runs needed.

Tom Measures took over after from Big at the bottom end and the youngest member of the Unit went on to bowl what was the best spell of the day by a Cosby bowler. At the pavilion end Oddsocks was brought on to see if the pitch would take to spin and bowled what shall be described as a mixed 5 over spell. Tom was bowling well and keeping things tight the bottom end and Curt was bowling some good deliveries from the top end but they were being accompanied by an equal number of poor deliveries. The score had quickly moved in to the 90s when the Outwoods opener hit Curt for 4 to move on to 50, however the next ball he came down the track to Oddsocks was beaten by the turn and the 2s had 3 wickets and finally a bowling point.

Tom continued the good work from the bottom end as the Outwoods captain continued to struggle against him and for a while it looked like Toms excellent spell was going to go unrewarded. The score had moved up to 114 when Tom finally got the wicket his bowling deserved when the Outwoods skipper edged one behind to Russ. However with so few runs needed Outwoods cruised to their victory target in the next over as the 2nd XI were beaten by 6 wickets and got a dressing down out on the outfield over their performance from Woody in a Phil Brown/Hull City style.

Result: Lost by 6 wickets

Points: Loughborough Outwoods 24 points, Cosby II 3 points

Tea Rating: *** A decent effort, no contender but couldn’t complain. No one got told off this year at least.

Quote Of The Day: After Whitey told us about having a falling dream Thorpey offered some insight in to what it all means.

Umar: Apparently if you’re having a falling dream and don’t wake before you hit the floor you die!!!

At tea whilst discussing Billsos boundary Coxy got his clichés a bit mixed up.

Calypso: He was on top of the moon with that.

MOM: Not many contenders this week, Phil starred with the bat and Whitey did ok with both bat and ball. MOM though goes to Tom Measures who was head and shoulders the best bowler on the day.

Verdict: A pretty grim day for the C2 Unit, batted badly and arguably bowled worse. All players need to focus on their own games and start contributing with the bat and/or ball. The 2s are capable of a lot better cricket than this and need to start showing it fast.
