Lutterworth II v Cosby Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 25 Apr 2010 at 1:30pm
Cosby Cricket Club Won by 43 runs (D/L Method!!)
Match report
27 Apr 2010 : Calypso Cox Stuns Lutterworth in the Cup
MATCH REPORT: Lutterworth II V Cosby, Everards League Junior Cup, Sunday 25th April 2010
Captain Pople took a massively under strength 1st team to Lutterworth more in hope than expectation - The hope being he would win the toss and not have to chase 400!!!
Well the first part was acheived and Cosby would bat with Popes and Damien opening up. The plan seemed to be working rather well as cosby got off to a flyer with Hursty hitting 10 off the first 3 balls but then Pople got hit in the nuts and smashed his box in two!! The pain was too much and the skipper retired hurt without score. With the Undertaker coming in so soon Cosby were under pressure but there was no panic.
The scoreboard kept ticking over and when Hursty was out to a great catch at point for 47 Cosby were 60 for 1 in the 15th over. This quickly became 60 for 2 as Thorpey was LBW 2nd ball and with Pople looking unlikely to return it was Waggys best mate Podge who strode out to the middle.
The pair batted well with Podge launching some trademark blows before he was bowled by Viraj for 24. Enter the most unlikely of heroes (well maybe not as unlikely as Fairbrother!)
Ben 'Calypso' Cox (as he must now be known) started as he meant to go on, a beuatiful straight drive for 4 off Baxter signalled his intent. The shots kept on coming including 2 massive 6s on his way to a maiden senior 50. Waggy also completed a half century and Cosby finished on 212 for 5 off their 40 overs. Cox finished 53 not out and had batted cosby into a real position of strength.
A very impressive Lutterworth Tea was enjoyed by all. you really cant beat the cold finger buffet combined with the warmth of Garlic Bread and Chicken Nuggets (although some ketchup would have been advisable!)
Cosbyshire then took to the field knowing that they had a chance but their inexperienced bowling line up would have to perform very well to ensure a victory!
Frank opened up and was a little wayward but his opening partner, the newly arrived Nazir was right on the money and beat the edge on several occasions! But Lutterworths Openers were well on track and wickets were needed.
Waggy replaced Frank but it was Nazir who got the breakthrough with a good caught and bowled dismisal of the Lutterworth Talisman and Captain Baxter. This brought Ash Rayner to the crease and he was very fortunate not to be adjudged LBW first ball!
Lutterworth continued and Nazirs impressive debut spell had finished (6-0-20-1). Gus replaced him but Lutterworth were still well placed. However, a big black cloud arrived just in time and play was suspended at 67-1 off 14.4 overs. A delay meant a revised total off 196 off 37 for Lutterworth but with more rain likely Cosby were focusing on the 20 over score. Effectively Lutterworth needed to be on 107 at the end of the 20th over.
When play resumed Waggy and Gus bowled tight and the fielding was good and when more rain came after just 8 balls Cosbys position was looking stronger. When play resumed for a second time Lutterworths revised target was 166 off 31 overs and with the score at 68-1 off 16 the maths was simple, 98 off 15 overs with 9 wickets in hand!
what followed was quite simply an excellent display from Cosby CC. Good tight bowling from Waggy and Gus continued with the later picking up 2 big wickets. The good fielding continued with 3 run outs into the mix from Waggy, Frank and Damien.
The pressure was getting too much for Lutterworth to handle and wickets continued to fall with 2 for Oddsocks and 1 for Ghandi (who bowled brilliantly at the end)
The Lutterworth Innings closed at 122 for 9 and Cosby had won by 44 runs (D/L Method!!!)
It was a truly outstanding performance by every member of the team! The reward is a home tie in the round of 16 against Countesthorpe 2s - Pople & Gus facing their former club!
