Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI v Shepshed Messengers II on Sat 25 Jun 2005 at 2pm
Cosby Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
2nd XI deliver 6 wicket beating to Messengers.
The 2nd XI secured a comprehensive 6 wicket victory over tricky opponents Shepshed Messengers.
Cosby II vs Shepshed II, Saturday June 25th 2005, Match Report.
What looked a tricky fixture against an experienced team turned into a relatively simple victory for the reserves at the weekend. In damp and overcast conditions the toss was always going to be crucial and fortunately captain Harrop called correctly and put the opposition in for the first time this season. The decision to bowl was looking a mistake with Messengers handily placed at 136 for 3 with 8 overs remaining and two established batsmen at the crease. However a fightback from the Cosby bowlers saw Shepshed lose their final 7 wickets for just 33 runs, finishing 169 all out in the 45th over. Veteran bowler Gary Whetton again lead the way bowling all the way through and finishing with 5 wickets for 83 runs. Ben Irvine offered valuable assistance picking up 3 wickets as well.
The score although not as daunting as feared still needed chasing down and thanks to some tight early bowling from Shepshed a tight finish looked likely and despite some lusty blows from Bickle the contest was in the balance at 35 for 2. Any fears of defeat were calmed however thanks to a stand of 70 between Sanjay Patel (42) and Mark Foxall (27) that was cruely ended when the already injured Foxall slipped playing a cut shot and had to retire hurt. A mini cllapse from 115 for 2 to 121 for 4 (effectively 5 due to Foxalls injury) had hearts fluttering again, but an assured un-broken stand between Dave Owen who scored 28 not out and captain John Harrop who got 24 unbeaten saw the 2nd XI with 6 overs to spare and 6 wickets in hand.
Verdict: A comprehensive victory over tough opponents with most players contributing with either bat or ball.
Points: Cosby II, 24 points
Shepshed Messengers II, 7 points.
