Melton Mowbray II v Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 16 Jul 2005 at 2pm
Cosby Cricket Club Won 105 runs
Match report
A destructive batting partnership between Lewis Todd and Duncan Clarke sets the game up for Andy Gray to spin the second team to victory over Melton.
Match Report vs Melton Mowbray II (a), Staurday July 16th.
On another glorious day for cricket, the second team recorded one of the seasons most comprehensive victories after racking up their highest score of the season.
The day started badly for the 2's when Harrops good fortune with the coin deserted him and Melton won the toss. However when Meltons skipper uttered the words we'll have a bowl the teams astonishment was only out weighed by their relief.
Despite the early loss of Alex White the innings started with good momentum as Jonty Bickle and first Sanjay Patel set about the Melton attack until Patel fell in the 12th over with the score on 49. Nigel Meredith strode out to the crease determined to get some batting under his belt having faced the grand total of one ball in the previous month. He and Bickle continued punishing the lacklustre Melton attack and took the score past 100 in the 19th over with some typical aggression from Bickle and some untypical aggression from KD.
Bickles dismissal an over later for 35 precipitated the now customary mid-innings collapse, as Meredith (33) and Sausage (5) both departed in the same over and with 22 overs remaining the 2's were 5 down for 117. This brought together the previous weeks batting heroes of Duncan Clarke and Podge and all were hoping they could repeat last weeks performance. The repeat of the performance never came, instead they managed to better what they achieved at Bosworth. Both Podge and Clarke took the bowling of Melton apart putting on 125 in just 18 overs. This included some big hitting from both men as Podege managed to clear the houses and Clarke nearly managed to clean up teammate Phil Needham who was catching 40 winks by the boundary edge and only moved with mili-seconds to spare. When the pair both fell in the 42nd over Will cave and Andy Gray took the score up to 257 before Harrop called them in with an over to spare.
After an excellent tea (The Melon proved especially popular, hint, hint) the seconds took to the field in the knowledge that despite the absence of leading wicket taker Gary Whetton and opener Duncan Clarke also being unable to bowl, a good bowling performance would be too much for Melton with such a mammoth total on the board.
The early breakthrough arrived in the 2nd over as Phil Needham managed to clean bowl Meltons opener. However the continuous fall of wickets was not materializing as Melton dug deep and set about trying to save the game. Without Whetton and Clarkes stringent opening burst the seconds struggled as Will Cave struggled with his line and Needham was having little luck at the other end. The introduction of Andy 'Sheriff' Gray supplied some control for the 2s as he picked up a couple of wickets in his first five overs. However further resisatnce from Richardson and Webster for Melton took the score up to 140 for 3 with 15 overs to go.
With the game evenly poiused the belated arrival of Sanjay Patel into the attack brought the wickets that were needed as he removed the obsturate Richardson for 40 with his 3rd ball and then picked up another with his very next delivery. The following over from Gray included a further 3 wickets including a sharp caught and bowled of the dangerman Webster, and five wickets had fell in just 10 balls. Gray picked up his 6th wicket (his 3rd 6 for of the season) in his very next over with a catch from Cave in the deep and Patel finished Melton off by bowling number 9 Lloyd to claim his 3rd wicket and Melton had lost their last 7 wickets for just 12 runs in 5 overs.
Points: Cosby II (24), Melton II (4).
MOM: Andy Gray, special mention for Podge and Dunc for a great partnership though!
Verdict: Not the toughest of opponenents but the victory was comprehensive to say the least.
