Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI v Mountsorrel Castle II on Sat 23 Jul 2005 at 2pm
Cosby Cricket Club Won 118 runs.
Match report
Probably the finest team performance of the season saw the 2nd XI record an emphatic 118 run victory over Mountsorrell.
Match Report vs Mountsorrell II (h), Saturday 23rd July 2005.
With a host of regulars missing through injury, first team call ups or just unavailable, including regular captain John Harrop the 2nd XI had a tricky looking fixture against a team that had beat them earlier in the season in the shape of Mountsorrell.
The day started well with stand in skipper Matt Bills getting the luck with the coin and having no hesitation in having a bat on what proved to be another excellent Cosby track. The decision to bat was shown to be correct early on as Bickle and another new opening partner Nigel Meredith getting the 2s off to a solid start with Meredith especially scoring at a surprisingly brisk rate. When he fell for 26 in the 11th over the score was on 47 and Sanjay Patel came out to the crease and took over where KD left off. All this while Bickle was steadily accumulating at the other end. Patel appeared in fine form and when he lofted a six into the car park he looked destined for a big score, unfortunately the very next ball he hit a full toss straight to cover when it probably deserved another maximum!
With a solid start under their belts the 2s batsmen carried on where piling on the runs, dad to be Charlie Gibbons was next at the wicket and he and Jonty had a useful partnership of 34 before Bickle eventually fell for a patient 36 including a six into the car park as well. This brought Sausage to the wicket and he and Gibbo continued scoring at a healthy rate putting on 48 in under 10 overs before Gibbons was run out for an excellent 40 runs. When Sausage fell 2 overs later doing the exact same thing as Sanjay the 2nd XI had Dave Owen and Podge at the crease and here the fun started. After an over or two of getting his eye in Podge went into assault mode and launched Mountsorrels bowler Williams for three huge sixes off the first three balls of the over, with everyone else thinking about Gary Sobers, Lewis batted sensibly and just got a single off the next ball. However the score was now 200 and there were still 7 overs remaining. Podge eventually fell for 31 off just 15 balls and had taken the 2s from a good score to an excellent total. Further momentum was provided by Dave Owen and GaryWhetton who put on 41 in 5 overs before the declaration came at 256 for 6 in the 43rd over.
After another excellent tea (still no melon or strawberries mind!) the 2s were confident with such a big score on the board that victory would be theirs. Things were going well early doors with openers Gary Whetton and Phil Needham taking 3 wickets between them in their opening spell. This had Mountsorrells captain Holder at the crease and when he launched Whetton for 6 off his very first ball a few eyebrows raised. When he got down the other end he did the exact same thing to veteran bowler Ken Needham not once but twice and the 2s were thinking if this guy hangs around we need 356. However Needham got his man next ball when Holder smacked a ball straight to star fielder Steve 'Jonty' Bickle at square leg to spark a huge celebration amongst the Cosby players.
W.G carried on his good work whilst Sanjay Patel replaced Whetton at the Rugby pitch end. Despite going for a few runs Needham kept on getting wickets just as Captain Bills was thinking about giving the octagenarian a rest and finished withhis first five for of the season. Patel was having no luck at the other end so the skipper decided enough was enough and he was bringing himsef on to break an annoying 7th wicket partnership, however Needham got them both out the following over so instead he was bowling at the number 10. Bills finished the game off rapidly as he claimed the last two wickets in just 5 balls with a stumping by Sausage and a good catch by Sanjay. Mountsorrell had been bowled out for 138 and the 2s had taken another 24 points.
MOM: Impossible to pick out one player in such a good team effort.
Points: Cosby II 24, Mountsorrell 4.
Verdict: Great team spirit lead to a great team performance!
