Match report The 2nd XI have the better of a low scoring affair against 3rd placed Hinckley Amateurs as Mike Potter and Duncan Clarke star with the bat and ball respectively.

This top of the table clash with promotion rivals Hinckley Amateurs was a real opportunity for the 2s to put some distance between themselves and 3rd place. The day started badly though when returning captain John Harrop lost the toss, however when the opposing captain decided to have a bowl first nobody in the 2nd XI was too upset to be batting first and having the opportunity to set another commanding total.

The game started badly and it appeared that the Hinckley captain Henry Liddington had made a good call when opening batsman Jonty Bickle fell after just 5 balls for 0.

Alex White joined Mike Potter at the crease and started a mini revival putting on 36 before Stumpy was clean bowled for 18. When Sanjay Patel was dismissed 2 balls later to a debatable caught behind the 2s were rocking at 36 for 3. In came Simon 'Sausage' Jones and he and Blisters went about repairing the innings as it became more apparent that the pitch had a few demons in it. The pair put on a solid stand of 68 in 16 overs before Sausage fell for a well made 34 after the Hinckley bowlers had managed to put the brakes on the pair.

When Duncan Clarke was dismissed to become the 5th man out just 5 overs later the 2nds realised a score of 200 plus looked unlikely this week. However the mood lifted thanks to a brisk partnership of 38 between Potter and Lewis Todd in which Linford went to his half century and Podge contributed a typically brisk 28. After the dismissal of Podge the innings stuttered to a halt as the tail refused to wag. The final four wickets fell for just 18 runs, including Potter who was caught on the boundary with an over to go, for a hard fought 72.The 2s had been dismissed for 166 in 44 overs, largely due to Hinckleys opener Rastall who took 7 wickets.

The 2nds took the field not sure how good a score 166 was on the pitch, but it soon became clear that 166 would take a lot of getting with Whetton and Clarke in a typically stringent mood, and thanks to a couple of early strikes from Indiana Clarke, Hinckley were struggling at 6 for 2.

After this though the game went into stalemate as Hinckley never really pushed the scoring along and thanks to some missed chances in the field, further wickets didn't arrive until Clarke removed Gardener in the 30th over with the score on 59. When Clarke picked up Hinckleys number 5 just 2 overs later the pattern of the game changed. Hinckleys opener Spencer and the number 6 Stanford realised they needed to get on with it and started going for it and put on a speedy 36 before Stanford became Clarkes 5th victim with the score on 97.

Sanjay took a sharp caught and bowled 2 overs later and then Clarke removed the dangerous looking Whalley thanks to a catch from Mike 'Pacman' Potter, and then finally removed Spencer for 41, the 2s sensed an unlikely win was afoot. However the Hinckley batsmen were able to block out for a draw finishing 133 for 8 with Duncan returning with figures of 7 for 54.

Points: Cosby II 16 points, Hinckley Amateur II 8 points.

Verdict: Can't win every week, 16 points to 8 not to be sniffed at against promotion rivals!
