Match report Match Report: 2nd XI vs Croft II (a), Saturday 20th August 2005.

After the previous weeks washout against Rothley the 2s were determined to pick up the full 24 points against lowly Croft. The confidence in the team was high and was further improved when it became clear Croft were under strength and starting the game with only 10 fielders.

Captain Harrop lost the toss and Croft skipper invited the 2s to have a bat on what looked an uncertain wicket. The innings started in equally uncertain fashion as Jonty and Stumpy nearly managed to concoct a run out first ball and then Stumpy was fortunate to be dropped off his his first ball. The calamity continued as Bickles poor run with the bat continued when he was bowled for 1 in the 3rd over. Sanjay Patel looked to be in total control as he raced to 16 runs but then repeated his trick of getting himself out to bowling that he has the ability to destroy when he nicked one behind playing a very late cut.

Dave Owen joined Alex at the crease and the pair went on repairing the innings. Firstly by simple defence and rotation of the strike and then by destroying the immitation Roger Cook bowling of the croft attack,the highlight of the innings being stumpy hitting Podge with a cover drive for6. White eventually fell just one short of his 50 to a catch at the 5th attempt by the croft keeper. The pair had put on 90 and the 2s were looking strong at 114 for3.

Dave Owen was joined at the crease by a promoted up the order Phil Needham and the pair carried on the good work putting on 20 for the 4th wicket until Owen eventually succumbed on 45. Needham went on to record his highest score of the season scoring 29 before he was bowled by Joshi. Further good contributions enabled the 2s to kepp the score ticking over nicely until Harrop declared with an over to go and the score on 224 for7.

The 2s went onto the field confident the score would be too much for the weakened Croft side as the Cosby bowling and fielding would not be as loose as that of Croft. This proved to be the case as Duncan Clarke picked up his first victim in the second over to a sharp catch at mid-off by Podge. After this the wickets kept on falling early on and Croft were reduced to 21 for 7 with Clarke having picked up 6 of the wickets, thanks to some tight bowling and some good catching including a tumbling effort by 129 year old Ken Needham.

However the 8th wicket showed some resistance as Scrimshire and Nicholls kept Clarke and Whetton out thanks to some solid defence and some poor catching by the Cosby fielders. The partnership was eventually broken by golden arm Sanjay Patel who clean bowled the aggressive looking Nicholls and after that Clarke cleared up the final 2 wickets to finish with 8 for 20! Croft were bowled out for 48 and the 2s had picked up the full 24 they were after.

Verdict: A comfortable victory over poor opposition but you can only beat what is put in front of you!
