Match report 02 May 2011 : And it all began so well...C2 Unit crushed at Kirby

30th April 2011, Kirby Muxloe II vs Cosby II

The C2 Unit assembled down the park at the ridiculously early hour of 12 noon for the epic 15 minute journey to Kirby Muxloe and entertained themselves until departure watching the 1s finishing off the painting of the new sightscreen Ron. True to form and Curt’s prediction Frank aka The Hoff provided the majority of the entertainment when he stood in the paint tray.

On arrival at Kirby the 2s still had the best part of an hour to kill before the start of the match and so once again undertook a pre-match warm up with the bowlers attempting to find their lines and lengths whilst the rest of the 2nd XI led by Commandant Wood took part in a thorough fielding drill. With the warm ups out of the way and the entire Unit present (even Foxall) Veteran went out for what must have been the most protracted toss ever. He was out in the middle for ages before eventually returning to the dressing rooms with the news that he’d won the toss (it’s a miracle) and we were batting. This looked like the right course of action as it was a reasonably pleasant day and the track looked good.

2nd game of the season obviously meant a 2nd opening pair of the season as the skipper went out to bat with Hursty to get the 2s off to a positive start. This they managed to achieve as despite the odd testing delivery from the Kirby opening pair of Fattah and Shah the scoreboard was ticking along nicely at 4 an over. Both batsmen were cashing in on the loose deliveries that were offered up and were scoring increasingly well behind square on the offside (information provided by proud dad to be Matt Cox and his Wagon Wheels). Hurtsy with some well played late cuts, the Commandant with the trademark stand back and slap.

The score had moved serenely on to 51 in the 14th over when the first wicket went down when Fattah got one to skid through a bit and Hursty was bowled for a decent looking 27. This was the beginning of the nightmare for the Unit as next man in Gok was out for 0 the following over LBW to Shah despite the fact he appeared and sounded like he’d middle it onto his pad. Sheriff was umpiring and was a bit quick on the trigger as he gave our Korean envoy out. There was no such controversy a few balls later when Cindy’s Baby Boy was also LBW for 0 to Shah this time the general consensus being it was going on to hit the middle of middle. The Unit had slipped from 51 for 0 to 53 for 3. This soon became 54 for 4 as Nazi in chief Mark Foxall was run out for 0 having not faced a ball when Woody hit one firmly to the fielder at mid-wicket and ran. Some may say Herman Goering was on his heels a bit some may argue that having lost 3 quick wickets risky singles weren’t the order of the day, either way the result was the same and Foxy was out.

Oddsocks was in at 6 and joined the Skipper and the score had only moved on to 60 when the 5th wicket went down as Woody hit a firm straight drive and was well caught and bowled by a diving Fattah for 22. This brought Mid-Week Mark Breach to the crease and he soon became the 6th man out when he was too run out in kamikaze fashion. Having hit a firm shot to gully Mid-Week was looking for the run; unfortunately for him the gully fielder had stopped it. Undeterred Breachy carried on taking strides down the wicket despite Curt’s increasingly desperate cries of NO! Indeed it seemed the more Oddsocks told him to go back the further Mid-Week ventured down the track. Eventually he realised his folly attempted to make it back and was run out for 1. 63 for 6 was soon 64 for 7 as Curt got a good delivery from Shah that just clipped the top of his off stump and was out for 2. This rapidly became 67 for 8 as Uncle Ben Cox hit one straight up in the air 3rd ball to become the 4th duck of the day, the Unit had lost 8 wickets for 17 runs and there were still 17 overs remaining.

At 8 down Tom Measures was joined at the crease by Vice Captain Andy Gray and the pair did what the previous batsmen were unable to do and got their heads down and applied themselves. The pair were looking increasingly comfortable against the Kirby bowlers and were making a bit of a mockery of what had gone before them. Tom was looking increasingly in control as he managed to find the boundary a couple of times. Sheriff also got in on the act hitting a couple of nice shots as the 2s began dreaming of a score of around 133. The Kirby opening bowlers were eventually removed from the attack and replaced by 2 youngsters Kohli and Kinsey. The new bowlers had little effect early on as Sheriff and Tom continued to bat on. The score had been taken past 100 when Tom became the 9th man out when attempting to play a ball through the leg side got a leading edge and was easily caught at square leg for a well made 19. This brought last man Billso out to join Sheriff and the pair were going to have to repeat last seasons near heroics if the 2s were to get anywhere near a competitive score. The pair were looking in resolute mood again but could only take the score up to 112 when Billso played a ball in to leg side and Sheriff decided to take off for a run. Unfortunately for Andy the ball had gone straight to a fielder and there was never a run there and despite Billso shouting to wait there Andy was the 3rd run out of the day for 18 and the C2 Unit were all out.

The 2s went in for a decent tea including Wagon Wheels that were much more appealing than Coxy’s and laugh at Sunderland as they continued to slide down the league as they lost to Fulham knowing that they had let themselves down with the bat. After a good start a score of over 200 should have been the minimum we achieved. In the dressing rooms Woody was emphasising the need to forget what had happened with the bat and go out in the field give our all and hopefully a miracle could happen. Billso attempted to get this message across further by quoting the lyrics of 70’s soft rockers Journey as he encouraged the 2s to “Don’t stop believing”.

The 2s went out to field with Hursty and Measures sharing the new ball duties. The Kirby batsmen came out in apparent bullish mood and looked keen to cash in on any loose deliveries with some powerful shots through the off side and after 4 overs Kirby were 32 for 0. The runs continued to flow as both bowlers despite bowling the odd testing delivery were going for a boundary every over.

After 10 overs the score was 65 for 0 and Sheriff was brought on for Measures. Hursty was replaced a couple of overs later by Curt as the 2s were trying to spin a win out of unlikely circumstances. Andy was able to pick up a wicket when the Kirby opener lifted his back foot and couldn’t get back in time as Cindy’s Baby Boy had the bails off and Kirby were 80 for 1.

The wicket unfortunately didn’t inspire a miracle fight back by the 2s as Kirby continued on their merry way. Their skipper who opened the batting went past his 50 with a firmly hit boundary off Curt and he was joined at the crease by the youngster Kohli who looked a good prospect with the bat. Billso was brought on for Sheriff with Kirby needing 4 runs to win but couldn’t provide the miracle and Kirby went easily to their victory target inside 20 overs and the 2s had been well beaten.

Result: Lost by 9 wickets

Points: Kirby II 24 points, Cosby II 2 points

Quote of the Day: Pre match we were discussing Frank painting the sight screen.

Gok: Alarmingly Frank was painting the sight screen.

Cindy’s Baby Boy: Must have been quite easy for him though, I bet he had his potato already cut out!

Post match Kirby brought the shutters on the windows down whilst we were still getting changed.

Cindy’s Baby Boy: Bloody Hell it’s like Auschwitz.

Foxy: Auschwitz...What a place!

MOM: Not many contenders this week but MOM goes to Andy Gray for being one of the few to not let himself down with the bat and was the only bowler to take a wicket.

Verdict: As bad a performance as in recent memory from the 2nd XI. Players need to apply themselves to the situation and dig in when things aren’t necessarily going in our favour. Players can’t rely on others to score their runs, take their wickets for them. Focus on your own performances and hopefully we will use this as a learning curve.
