Match report 7th May 2011, Cosby II vs Loughborough Outwoods

After last week’s disappointing performance at Kirby Muxloe the 2s arrived for their home game against Loughborough Outwoods 1st XI with a point to prove. After the inclement weather of the previous innings and the morning the major job of the day was going to be removing the cover (tarpaulin sheet) without getting the water on the pitch. However on removal of the cover we discovered that Bayliss had struck again and where he had walked across it in his boots last year water had got through the sheet. This meant there were a couple of interesting wet patches on the pitch especially the one just short of a length.

When all the jobs were done the 2s abandoned the pre-match warm up of the previous 2 weeks to return to the old ways of lazing around and taking the piss out of Gok. Commandant Wood went out for the toss and returned to form as he lost another and the Outwoods skipper decided to have a bowl. The unit were divided in opinion whether being put into bat was a good or a bad thing; we would just have to find out.

Third match of the season naturally meant our third opening partnership of the season and this week the 2nd XI innings was opened up by Grice and Hursty. Things got off to a disastrous start as 2nd ball of the innings as the Outwoods opening bowler served up the longest of hops and Hursty in attempting to smash the cover off it could only dolly a catch up to cover, the 2s were 0 for 1. Gok was the next man in and after getting a nice juicy full toss that he hit away for 4 runs things looked to be on the up. However this proved a bit of a false dawn as in the 3rd over Crouching Tiger Hidden Gok played a bit of a nothing shot and was easily caught and bowled, the Unit were in trouble again as they were 7 for 2.

Grice was joined at the crease by Cindy’s Baby Boy and the pair went about repairing the innings which they did with some success. Thanks to a combination of some good batting and at times fairly average bowling the pair started pushing the score along nicely The more the pair batted the more easily the runs began to flow as the Outwoods bowlers and fielders continued to perform without distinction and had reached 50 when Grice did the exact same thing as Hursty in hitting a long hop straight to cover and the 2s were 3 down.

In at number 5 was Tom Measures promoted up the order after being one of the few to perform with the willow the previous week. The move paid off handsomely as Tom found his form pretty much straight away and took the fight to the Outwoods bowlers and regularly found the boundary. He and Russ continued to benefit from the inconsistent bowling on offer and had some pretty high scoring overs. They took the score past 100 in the 19th over and by drinks the score had reached an impressive 120 for 3. However the curse of the drinks break appeared to have struck a couple of overs later when Tom clattered a ball to mid off and was well caught by The Ouwoods fielder, however the bowler had over stepped and Hursty had called the no ball Tom had a reprieve. However Tom couldn’t take advantage of the life he was given when 4 balls later he did the exact same thing again and was caught in the same place for an impressive knock of 38.

At 130 for 4 Veteran marched out to the crease to join Sully and the pair initially continued to push the score on as Russ went past 50 for the first time this season. During their stand Woody played one of the most inventive /flukey shots this report writer has ever witnessed when attempting to sweep the ball behind square it struck the back of his bat and looped over the wicket keepers head for a single, the general consensus being that Woody had just played the world’s first reverse dilscoop! The score had reached 147 after 30 overs when Woody became the 5th man out when he played a half hearted shot to the returning Outwoods opening bowler and played the ball on to his stumps and the 2s were 5 down. This quickly became 7 down as Curt was out LBW to a ball that shot along the deck for 0 and Russ was dismissed for a well made 55.

This left the 2s still with 14 overs to bat but with only 3 wickets in hand some introspection was surely going to be needed. At the crease was Cooky’s apprentice Alex White and vice captain Andy Gray. The pair took the game back to the Outwoods bowlers who were still bowling a fair amount of wayward deliveries and the score soon started moving on again with Gnomeo looking good on his 1st game of the season and regularly found the boundary. Sheriff and Stumpy had taken the score up to 193 when Whitey became the 8th man out when he was bowled leg stump for an aggressive 24. Uncle Ben Cox was in at 10 and after his rash display with the bat he went in with the instructions from the entire C2 Unit to have a look early on ringing in his ears. Ben heeded the advice and first ball when offered a fullish and straight delivery he went to defend it. However Ben played the ball with hard hands and offered a simple return catch to the bowler and was out for a golden duck, next time just play your own game Ben. This meant the 2s still had 5 overs to bat, were still short of the magic 200 mark and Billso was going in to face the hat trick ball.

Billso survived the hat trick and the front row pairing had the task of surviving the overs and getting the score past 200. This they managed to do largely without having to play many shots due to the general wide nature of the Outwoods bowling. The pair survived the overs and the score finished on 215 for 9 with Andy finishing 16 not out, Billso 2 not out and the final total contribution of extras amounted to 50 runs.

The 2s went in to tea happy with the score they got as in truth it wasn’t a 215 pitch, however they felt they could have scored more as Outwoods bowling was in truth at best average and the majority of the wickets lost were down to people attempting to hit bad balls and not executing the shots as they’d hope.

In the dressing dressing rooms post tea, Woody got across the message that at the moment he felt the game was ours for the taking and that if we bowled and fielded as we can we should win the game. Hursty and Tom Measures once again shared the new ball duties and unlike the previous week neither looked like giving anything away early on as Outwoods openers struggled to get the ball away. The frugal performance with the ball brought early reward as Hursty soon picked up a couple of wickets in near identical fashion as their opener and number 3 hit balls gently in to the air to provide 2 simple catches for Cindy’s Baby Boy behind the stumps.

Outwoods were 10 for 2 and the Unit were well in control and this soon became 15 for 3 when Tom picked up his 1st wicket of the season when the Outwoods other opener looked to hit him through mid wicket only to hit it to Frodo White who jumped in to the air to take a smart catch. It was commented that he was the only member of the team that would have needed to jump to take the catch. 15 for 3 quickly became 24 for 4 as Tom picked up his 2nd wicket when Outwoods young number 5 just planted his leg down the wicket and was given out LBW.

With his side in trouble the Outwoods captain was at the crease and appeared intent on hitting his side out of trouble. He had limited success putting Hursty over cover for 6 and picking up a few more boundaries. With the positive intent being shown by their skipper Woody decided a touch of spin would be the order of the day and brought Oddsocks on at the Deeply Dippy End. Curt hit his straps early and was bowling good lines and lengths and giving the Outwoods batsmen problems. He managed to pick up his 1st wicket when the Outwoods number 6 over balanced and Russ took a smart stumping.

At the DOTB End Whitey was brought on and his 1st over was eventful to say the least. His first ball was a high full toss that the Outwoods skipper ducked under and was correctly called no-ball. The next delivery was a carbon copy only this time it dipped and hit the stumps 3/4s of the way up, out surely? No, another no ball had been given with the Unit doubting the legitimacy of the decision. However all controversy was remove d a couple of balls later when the Outwoods skipper slashed at a ball outside his off stump and was smartly caught at backwards point by Sheriff. The 7th wicket quickly followed when Whitey cleaned up their number 8 with what looked a peach of a delivery and the score was only on 53.

Curt and Whitey both managed to pick up a further wicket and Outwoods were 65 for 9. The script seemed to be written in the stars as Curt bowled a delivery to the number 10 that he looked to slog down Main Street but only hit the ball up. Under the ball was Skipper Paul Wood and the stage was set for Veteran to take the winning catch and further inflate his ego. Unfortunately for the clubs Richard Fairbrass wannabe couldn’t live up to the occasion as he grassed the chance. The dropped catch didn’t prove costly though as the following over Whitey picked up his 4th wicket and polish off the Outwoods innings as they finished 72 all out.

Result: Cosby II win by 143 runs

Points: Cosby II 24 points, Loughborough Outwoods 3 points

Quote of the Day: Pre match in the dressing rooms Russ appears in a good mood despite the Skipper’s words about the previous week’s performance;
Veteran: What are you so jovial about?
Cindy’s Baby Boy: Well I know what’s coming next.

Post match the C2 Unit were discussing the Captains dropped catch.
Grice: Poor Curt would have had 3 wickets if it wasn’t for you.
Veteran: I just felt Whitey could do with boosting his confidence so I thought I’d let him take the final wicket.
Oddsocks: Bell End!!!

MOM: Exact opposite of last week with plenty of contenders. All the bowlers did well with Whitey and Measures also starring with the willow however MOM goes to Russ Sullivan for his 55 runs, 2 catches and a stumping

Verdict: Exactly the response required by the C2 Unit after the previous weeks set back. A good team performance against albeit limited opposition. Important this is a spring board for the rest of the season now.
