Match report 26 May 2011 : 2nd XI Beat Barwell 2s at The Cosby Oval

MATCH REPORT: Cosby II v Barwell II, Saturday 20th May 2011 @ The Cosby Oval

After the previous weeks disappointing display at Melton Mowbray the 2s were looking to bounce back and produce a positive performance and at least maintain their unbeaten home record.

With the weather set fair Woody won the toss and elected to bat first with Woody himself opening with the Duck Cup Leader Matt Hurst. Cosby started brightly although it was mainly due to some extraordinarily wayward bowling from Barwell’s Steve Johnson.

The first Cosby wicket fell when Captain Wood (7) was given out LBW by the excellent Barwell Umpire, although Woody wasn’t best pleased with the decision!! This brought Dave Thorpe to the crease and what followed was an excellent display of controlled batting by Hurst & Thorpe. The pair put on around 150 for the second wicket before Thorpey was bowled by the Excellent Dec Allen for 55.

The innings continued positively with the score going comfortably passed 200 with contributions from Russ Sullivan (7), Lee Turner (16) & Nigel Meredith (0). Matt Hurst was out for an agonising 99 but with Ben Cox hitting a rapid 39no the Cosby innings finished 258-6.

After the Tea Break Lee Turner & Alex White were given the responsibility of the new ball and Turner quickly removed opener Wright for 4. In truth Turner deserved better than his figures 9-2-44-1 suggested as he bowled with good pace in good areas. Alex White at the other end was also causing problems for the Barwell batsmen and took 2 wickets in an extensive (14 overs) spell!!

It was however the excellent and economical bowling of both ‘Big’ Phil Needham and Andy ‘Sherriff’ Gray that ripped the heart out of the Barwell order. Phil with 3-23 bowled an attacking line that complemented Andy’s 3- 24 control at the other end and the pair of them dominated the Barwell middle order.

With an over to go Captain Wood made a bold decision to bring Alex White back into the attack and it worked a treat with the fourth ball over the over trapping the last Barwell batsmen LBW and the team were dismissed for 172.

Credit must also be given to the young Barwell umpire who could easily have said not out but throughout the game the young lad was composed and consistent and a real credit to himself.

RESULT: Cosby II win by 86 Runs

POINTS: Cosby II (24) Barwell II (5)

MOM: A few contenders with good displays from Dave Thorpe, Ben Cox, Alex White, Andy Gray & Phil Needham but 99 from Matt Hurst was the performance that gets the nod.

VERDICT: Much improved all round performance and a well deserved result. More performances like this needed in what looks like a very topsy turvey division
