Match report 28th May 2011, Hinckley Amateurs II vs Cosby II

The 2s arrived at Hinckley Amateurs with a much changed side from the previous weeks victory over Barwell with Whitey, Big, Hursty and Sheriff unavailable for a variety of reasons being replaced by Billso, Foxy, Podge and for the first time this season Trigger (Hooray). Having arrived a good hour before kick off the C2 unit undertook a variety of warm ups with some practicing batting or bowling and others playing with Gok’s aerobie.

When Hinckley finally arrived Commandant Wood went out for the toss and I presume won it this week and decided the 2s would be having a bat. Faced with what is traditionally a lively strip and due to playing on a pitch at the very edge of the square some short boundaries (and a couple of huge ones) only time would tell if the decision would prove to be correct.

The skipper and the 2nd XI’s Korean Exchange Student went out to open the innings and things got off to a good start with 10 coming off the first over thanks to the additional bonus of 4 byes coming off each of the first 2 balls. Despite some testing deliveries from the Amateurs openers Veteran and Kato looked to be doing ok taking the score up to 24 before Woody became the first man out when in all fairness he was bowled by what looked a decent delivery for 3.

Mr Happy Dave Thorpe came in at 3 and he and Hiro Nakamura set about continuing the reasonable start that the 2s had made. Batting was far from easy at this point as the pitch definitely had life in it with the odd delivery rearing up off a good length. This was highlighted when the Amateurs opener got the ball to get up from a good length to Thorpedo and as Gok put it the ball “knocked him on the boggin”. With Woody (who was umpiring) wondering what he was on about Gok explained he meant “bonked him on the noggin”. Much clearer. For those of you that don’t speak Korean Gibberish what happened was the ball deflected off Dave’s arm and hit him on the head knocking his cap off. Thankfully other than losing his titfer Umar was unhurt and he and Nige continued building the Cosby innings. The score had moved up to 52 when Gok became the 2nd man out when faced with one of the longest hops you’ll ever see pulled the ball behind square only for Amateurs senior member to be stationed there and take a decent catch (although the dive he put in was a bit excessive).

Goks demise brought Cindy’s Baby Boy to the crease and early on he was looking in nervy form against some still lively Hinckley bowling. However once he managed to get hold of a few and get some runs on the board CBB started looking in good knick again. With Gandhi offering good support at the other end the pair took the fight to the Amateurs bowling as the Cosby innings began to go from strength to strength. The pair had taken the score past 100 when Thorpey became the 3rd man out when he got a leading edge and was caught and bowled for a well made 39. At this stage I will admit I am not 100% sure this is how Dave was out as I was watching the Tigers against Saracens in the tea room at the time.
With 28 overs gone and the score on 110 the 2s appeared to have the perfect man to go in at 5 as Podge strode out to join CBB in the middle. After a couple of overs introspection the pair continued the good work with Russell in particular looking in increasingly good form as he took a liking to the Amateurs back up bowlers. Boundaries were coming ever more frequently at both ends as both Russ and Podge tucked in. CBB went past 50 for the 2nd time this season and then began to cut loose taking a special liking For Amateurs slow bowler with some huge sixes. Russ eventually fell for an aggressive 77 when he was well caught behind the stumps but the Cosby innings was in good shape at 170 for 4 with 10 overs remaining. Lee ‘LT’ Turner was in at number 6 and he and Podge continued the good work of the previous batsmen taking the score in to the 190’s before Podge became the 5th man out having made 39 for what looked a pretty adjacent LBW.

‘Uncle’ Ben Cox was in at 7 with the freedom to have a go but this week it didn’t pay off as he made only 5. Foxy armed with yet another new bat (this time some club purchased from India) joined LT at the crease and the pair took the score past 200 and then looked to get the C2 Unit up to as high a total as possible. It was LT who was the main aggressor of the partnership hitting some mammoth blows as runs flowed freely in the final 5 overs as the 2s finished on 247 for 6 with Lee 39 not out and Foxall 2 not out.

An impressive enough tea (kudos on the carrot cake) was spent watching the Tigers attempt to get a try in the dying moments of the Premiership final (oh well always next year) and the 2s were happy with the total they had posted on what was to be fair not a 247 track and felt confident they had too many for Hinckley to chase down.

The 2s went out to bowl with LT and Trigger sharing the new ball duties. The pair started in good fashion getting the most out of what was still a lively track. Despite the good bowling wickets were not forthcoming thanks to some stubborn defence and determination from the Amateurs openers. Indeed the early highlights in the field were Billso’s attempts at fielding at square leg where he spent most of the time doing a passable impression of Bambi on ice. Some new boots required me thinks. With wickets not coming and Hinckley having 45 on the board after 12 overs Umar was brought on for Trig at the pavilion end. After an inauspicious first deliver Thorpey settled into his rhythm and he and LT continued to ask questions of the Amateurs batsmen but the pair toughed it out and continued adding on the runs.

It wasn’t until the 20th over that the C2 unit eventually got the breakthrough when there was confusion amongst the Amateurs batsmen as one ran the other didn’t and Woody got the run out after eventually deciding to run it in rather than throw it Amateurs were 80 for 1. 2 balls later this became 80 for 2 as the 2s were able to get another run out as the number 3 played the ball to Gok at gully and decided to run, there was never a run there and the opening bat rightly stayed in his ground and despite a slightly wayward throw Russ removed the bails.

With 2 wickets down Lee and Dave continued plying away but the wickets were still not coming for the unlucky pair as the ball continued to evade fielders or just miss the stumps with LT especially bowling like a lion but for little reward. Thorpey thought he’d got his breakthrough when the Hinckley opener attempted to hit him over long off only for Trigger to be waiting for the catch. Having initially walked in to far the C2 Units resident weatherman backtracked well and appeared to have the catch, however with his momentum taking him backwards and towards the boundary rope he fell to the floor and as his elbow hit the ground the ball bounced out. However Thorpey was only denied until his next over when The Amateurs opener hit him straight to Kato at Gully who took the catch with ease, Hinckley were 110 for 3.

LT was still toiling away at the top end without luck (hope Lee didn’t do the lottery this week) and runs were proving hard to come by it was beginning to look like the 2s were going to be on the better side of the result it was just a case of whether they would be able to force the victory. Oddsocks was brought on for Thorpey who had bowled 10 frugal overs in an attempt to spin the 2s a win. Curt hit his marks well and was bowling with good flight and guile. Hinckley were starting to play a few more shots to get up to a decent score and runs began to flow including one ludicrous 6 off LT that was top edged over Russ behind the stumps and hit the sightscreen.

As LT continued his hard slog from the top end Curt was able to pick up a couple of wickets as the 2s chances of victory began to dwindle with smart catches in the deep from Podge and Coxy. The score had moved up to 190 for 5 and Hinckley chased down 200 so they would get extra points. By this stage the 2s chances of winning had all but gone so they set about defending the boundaries to make sure they got as many points as possible. After 21 overs of hard slog LT eventually got the wicket his bowling more than deserved when he bowled the Amateurs skipper who was attempting to push the score along. After picking up his 1st wicket in his 21st over he picked up number 2 in his 22nd as Hinckley continued to push for 200. They managed to achieve this in the final over despite a near run out and a good attempt at a catch from Gok as they finished on 202 for 7 and the 2s had got the winning draw.

Result: Winning Draw

Points: Hinckley Amateurs II 8 points, Cosby II 17 points

Quote of the Day: Before heading to Hinckley Billso was talking to Frank down the park;
Billso: Alright Frank?
Frank: Yeah, you alright...erm...sorry I’ve forgot your name.

Towards the end of the innings Billso mis-fields a ball that bounced in about 10 directions (No exaggeration)
CBB: I’ve seen a batsman deceived by a slower ball before but never a fielder.

MOM: Good efforts by a few this week with special mention to Lee Turner who put in a marathon 23 over spell that didn’t get the rewards it deserved. However MOM goes to Russ Sullivan who gave the innings real momentum with his aggressive 77 as well as keeping well on a lively pitch.

Verdict: 247 for 6 was a great effort on a lively pitch with good contributions all the way down. Bowling and fielding remained good despite not being able to get the early breakthroughs. Stayed patient and managed to get a good result out of the match. A fair result to a good game of cricket.
