Match report Another superb innings by Sanjay Patel is the highlight as the 2nd team escape with a draw against Loughborough C.O.B thanks to poor weather.

Match Report: Loughborough C.O.B II vs Cosby II

On arrival in Loughborough friendly faces, a rock hard pitch and a wet outfield greeted the 2s. It was clearly going to be a good track to bat on but equally clear that you weren’t getting value for your shots thanks to the slowness of the outfield.

The coin landed favourably and captain Harrop decided batting first was the order of the day. Things started well as openers Meredith and Foxall were playing the Carillion bowling with little trouble and securing the required solid start. Meredith was looking especially good as his feet were moving well and he and Foxy both looked set for decent scores. Foxall eventually fell for 28 runs after putting on 79 in 23 overs for the opening partnership. The innings was probably worth more runs than it mustered due to the difficulty in hitting boundaries.

Sanjay Patel joined KD at the crease and the pair continued putting together a solid partnership. Meredith was the next to fall with the score on 101 after accruing 40 runs and was only dismissed thanks to a fantastic diving, one handed catch. It was at this point that Patel began to take over and was looking to dominate the Loughborough bowling with some typical aggression. After Dave Owen fell for 7, Podge joined Patel, and the pair went about increasing the run rate further. They put on 35 in under 5 overs during which both batsmen set about the Carillion spinners.

After Podge was dismissed for 24, Duncan Clarke joined Sanjay and the pair put on another 21 runs during which Sanjay went to his second 50 in two weeks. On 177 and with 2 overs remaining Sanjays innings eventually came to an end on 52 when he became Hagues 4th victim. A further 9 runs were added in the last 2 overs thanks to Duncan and first Phil Needham and then Matt Cox, the 2s had finished with a respectable 186 for 6.

After an excellent tea the 2s went into the field confident that they would be able to bowl out Carillion and secure their first win of the season. Things started well with Duncan Clarke and Michael Whitehead causing problems. The breakthrough came in the 4th over when Patel took a smart catch at short mid-wicket off Whitehead and Carillion were rocking at 6 for 1.

Cosby were creating real problems with the ball but unfortunately the dropped catches of the week before were making a reappearance. The dangerous looking Goodchild was dropped 3 times for which he would make the 2s pay. A 2nd wicket came thanks to a great run out by Dave Owen and the 2s sensed a win, however a partnership of 60 between Goodchild and Stanfield swung things back in Carillions favour, despite the continued good work from Clarke and Needham.

Runs were beginning to come easy for the Loughborough batsmen and it wasn’t until Sanjay “golden arm” Patel came on to bowl that the partnership ended thanks to a good catch from Matt Cox. Goodchild went on to reach an unbeaten 50 but by this time the rain was beginning to come down fast and the game had to be abandoned in the 30th over with Loughborough on 115 for 3. The 2s were glad to get off as at that point it looked like there was only going to be one winner.

Result: Winning Draw

Points: Loughborough Carillion (7) Cosby (12)

MOM: Sanjay Patel (Again)

Verdict: A good day with the bat, but if it hadn’t rained the 2s would have lost. If we want survive and compete in this division we need to start holding catches.
