Match report 1st XI Start Season With Well Timed Run Chase.

MATCH REPORT: Saturday 26th April 2008
Cosby V Dunton Bassett (a)

A period of poor weather and a not too good forecast was the main focus of talk before the opening day of the season. Fortunately Michael Fish had a change of heart and brought sunshine to Dunton Bassett!

Matt Hurst won the toss and elected to bowl on what looked an excellent wicket considering the amount of rain had been around! The match started well enough for Cosby with the bowlers keeping things tight, but some dropped catches left Dunton dangerously placed for a big score and an element of frustration was creeping in to the cosby ranks as Dunton passed the 100 mark without loss. The good news for Cosby was the run rate was around 3 per over and a couple of quick wickets would have made a massive difference.

It wasn't however until the 32nd that the breakthrough came, with Charlie Sampson taking a smart catch of the bowling of Alex White. Roger Cook then took 2 wickets in an over and Cosby were back in the game. The closing stages of the Dunton innings saw Matt Hurst pick up a couple of wickets and Dunton closed on 195-5 with their skipper Ian Bateman unbeaten on 86.

The tea interval came and went with Cosby feeling confident of chasing down the 196 required to win on what was clearly a good track.

The innings started very positively as Charlie Sampson & Lewis Todd set about the Dunton attack, with Todd inparticular dispatching the opening bowlers to every corner of the ground. A stand of 84 in quick time set Cosby up for a big win but then Dunton fought back with some tight bowling and both Cosby openers fell. Mark Foxall and Tom Gregson took up the chase but struggled to get on top and when they were both dismissed Cosby were 117-4.

That left Matt Hurst and Dave Thorpe needing 79 from 78 balls and in truth, with the bowlers on top, it looked unlikely at that stage. But good running between the wickets and some big hitting put Cosby back in the driving seat and when Matt Hurst smashed Dunton opener Ashley Voss into the next field the game was virtually over. It was then left to Dave Thorpe to hit the winning runs with 10 balls to spare to give Cosby an excellent victory.

RESULT: Cosby win by 6 wkts
MOM: Lewis Todd (outstanding early onslaught that really set up the win)
POINTS: Cosby (21) Dunton Bassett (7)

VERDICT: Great Start to the Season
