Match report
1st XI Oh So Close To Remarkable Victory
MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Loughborough Greenfields,(a),Saturday 14th June 2008
As the 1s arrived in Loughborough they were greeted by rain and a roller with a sponge! (it might be worth cosby purchasing one of those)
The Skipper won the toss and had no hesitation asking Greenfields to Bat. Without Michael White and Andy Gray, the Cosby attack to the game to greenfields on a lively track but it was the aggressive batting of King and Rehal that had the better of the opening exchanges, with both batsmen taking advantage of the short boundaries!
The breakthrough came when Dawkins caught Rehal off the bowling of Clarke for 24 and that wicket brought a slowdown in the run rate as Dawkins himself set about the Greenfields batsmen. Robbie removed the no.3 then the superstar himself Mr. Widdowson was caught behind for not very many and the 'mongies' from Cosby had spoilt his day!!
Dawkins finished with 2-55 from his 11 overs.
Roger Cook then entered the fray and bowled with superb control and guile picking up 4-35 in the process, including the wicket of King for a well made 67. It really was an excellent spell from the leg spinner and in truth Greenfields had little response to the spin queen. The Greenfields innings closed on 216-7 and Cosby were happy enough.
An excellent Greenfileds tea came and went with Lee Atkinson having 3 sittings on his return to the 1st XI (it was perhaps his most significant contribution to the day!)
217 to win was the requiremnet and Cosby got off to a disappointing start was Todd was well caught by Rehal of King for 0! Odell joined Sampson at the crease and began the run chase but the bowling of King and Widdowson was excellent, making it very difficult for Cosby to score.
Odell fell LBW for 18 and Bayliss (with his head on for a change) came out and looked good, playing some nice shots with a couple glorious cover drives inparticular, but it wasn't his day as Rehal sent one down that didn't really bounce and Bayliss was trapped in front for 16.
Simon Whitehead then joined Charlie, who was going along steadily, but Simon couldn't get going and was brilliantly caught by Clarke off Rehal for 4. At this point Cosby were not ideally placed at 106-4 off 31 overs!
Captain Hurst promoted himself up the order intent on getting the Cosby innings going again and made his intentions clear with early boundaries. Sampson got in on the act as well as the pair accelerated with a plan of getting as many points as possible. 133,166,167,187,200,207 were targets set and targets met, Sampson went to his ton (108no) and an unlikely victory seemed possible with Cosby needing 15 from the last over!
With 11 required off the last 2 balls Matt Hurst put Jordan King into the houses for 6 and the impossible was in reach! But King bowled a good last ball which Hurst could only mange a single to finish 52no.
RESULT: Draw
POINTS: Cosby (10) Greenfields (14)
MOM: 3 candidates in Cook, Sampson and Hurst but Charlies 108 not out gets the nod. An outstanding innings in the face of quality aggressive bowling.
VERDICT: To get so close to the victory was ultimately disappointing. But we can be very pleased with the way we played and we showed we are no push overs, perhaps we lacked a little killer instinct with the ball but come the end of the season i don't think this will be a bad result at all.
