Match report 1st XI fail to impress at Market Bosworth

MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Market Bosworth (a), Saturday 28th June 2008

Another toss won but this time a tough decision, a flatish looking track with a very green tinge, the smallest boundaries in the history of cricket and an unpredictable weather forecast. Cosby elected to field.

Hurst and White opened up keeping things tight and bar the odd edge for 4 the scoring was slow from the Bosworth opening pair. Alex got the breakthrough when he cleaned up the no.2 but this brought Captain Spence to the crease, a very dangerous, big hitting left hander. Alex found the edge first ball but it went between slip and gully for 4! Spence and Taylor continued to progress the scoreboard but the introduction of spin in the form of Lee Atkinson slowed them up and Spence was excellently caught behind for 48 by Dave Thorpe.

Cook, Gray and Ako kept things tight enough and wickets started to fall and with overs running out Bosworth were in a spot of bother at 165-5. Enter, Mr Roderick, the burly all rounder decided he would have a go and have a go he did, he smashed 56 not out of 29 balls and got the Bosworth total up to a respectable 233-6!

Tea came and went and Cosby set about the run chase. 234 to win on a small ground with a quick outfield was well within our reach and although Sampson ran Whitehead out for just 9, Charlie looked in ominous form with boundary after boundary! Unfortunately Sampson was well caught at mid-wicket for 44 but Odell and Bayliss took up the mantle well and at drinks Cosby were 124-2 off 23 overs.

Needing just 110 off 22 overs with 8 wickets in hand should really have been a formality but some bizarre wickets and some awful batting ultimately cost Cosby dearly!!

Odell fell for 33 but should not have been on strike! Rob angled a ball down to backward point and scampered through for a single, in the process a Bosworth fielder shyed at the Non Strikers end and missed, the ball went through for 4 overthrows, therefore, 5 runs to Odell and Bayliss on strike? No said the umpire Odell on strike, out the very next ball!!!

Bayliss then decided to lose his head on 35, charging the left arm off spinner, missing it by a mile and getting stumped in the process!!, in all truth that just about summed up Cosby's day! Thorpe, Hurst, Dawkins and Alex White all fell trying to chase the score and it was left to Cook and Atkinson to shut up shop and hold out for the draw!

RESULT: Losing Draw

POINTS: Cosby (7) Market Bosworth (18)

MOM: Charlie Sampson

VERDICT: Not Good Enough from start to finish, to many basic errors in all parts of our game, not enough responsibilty shown by individuals at key moments in the game! Most disappointingly, Bosworth seemed to want it more!!
