Melton Mowbray II v Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 17 May 2008 at
Cosby Cricket Club Won by 9 Wickets
Match report
Match Report: Melton II v Cosby II, Saturday May 17th 2008.
The 2s arrived in Melton to be greeted by rain and a general state of confusion as the match on the board read Melton 2s vs Crosby 2s. However with the Crosby team mysteriously absent common sense prevailed and they played us anyway.
Saus finally had the luck go his way at the toss and elected to stick Melton in on what looked a juicy wicket. This weeks new ball partnership was Neil Measures and Paul Wood and they looked the ideal bowlers on the green wicket thanks to their nagging accuracy. The breakthrough took a while to come and finally arrived in the 15th over when Measures had Meltons opener caught by specialist mid-off Adam Cooper. Meltons other opener Freer was timing the ball well and was being supported by the stubborn Draper. Wood eventually removed Freer going for 1 shot to many when he took out his middle stump.
Melton looked well set on for 60 for 2 but runs were always difficult to come by for them. Tom Measures came into the attack and bowled 6 very economical overs for 10 runs. It was Michael Whitehead and Adam Coopers introduction to the attack that did the damage to the Melton scorecard. Whitehead bowled excellently to pick up 3 for 18 whilst working over Draper who always looked happy to get off strike. Cooper as well sent a message to the skipper picking up 3 wickets with his right arm round medium pacers including a fine caught and bowled. The wickets were rounded up by a fine run out from Jackie Chan and Bills had the last man stumped with an over to spare.
After a tea that saw Portsmouth win the FA Cup (bang goes my scorecast) Cosby sent openers Meredith and Sullivan out with instructions to get the runs for 0 wickets and to avoid the previous weeks batting disasters. The pair set about the Melton attack with relish with Sullivan in particular taking to the wayward Melton bowling for a fine innings of 59 despite a few scares. Sullivan eventually fell with the game all but won with the score on 99. This brought young Matt Cox to the crease who finished the game in quick style with 13 not out and Meredith finished with another fine innings of 32 not out. The 2s had won by 7 o’clock leaving plenty of time for Billsos birthday celebrations.
Result: Cosby Win
Points: Melton 2, Cosby 24
MOM: Fine performances all round, but the skipper went for Russ Sullivan for his performance behind the stumps and his 2nd fifty of the season.
Verdict: A good performance against limited opposition. All the bowlers bolwed with the discipliner that was missing the previous week and the batsmen appeared alot more focused as well. Strong all round performance.
