Kirby Muxloe II v Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 24 May 2008 at
Match was Drawn Losing
Match report
Early batting failures causes 2nd XI to settle for draw.
Match Report: Kirby Muxloe II vs Cosby II, 24th May 2008.
The stiffs arrived at Kirby Muxloe pleasantly surprised at the improvements that have been made to the Kirby ground. A new pavilion and what looked a belter of a track promised a good days cricket was in store. Captain Sausage won his second consecutive toss and again decided bowling was the order of the day.
The 2nds took to the pitch knowing a disciplined performance would be needed with the ball with Kirby flying high in the league and the force 10 gale that was blowing across the pitch. Things started well again with Paul Wood in frugal form with the ball and Alex White consistently threatening a wicket. The breakthrough came in the 6th over when Whitey removed the off stump of one of Kirby impressive young opening batsmen. Woody and Whitey continued to perform in the first 20 overs with Wood finishing with 0 for 22 off his 10 overs and Alex getting the first three wickets leaving Kirby precariously placed at 85 for 3.
The arrival of the Kirby skipper Bailey at the crease added some momentum to their innings as he too a liking for both White and Mikey Whitehead. During this period the Cosby fielding was also not helping as Bills and Meredith dropped the Kirby opener Smith and Bailey respectively off Whitehead.
The introduction of Bills to the bowling attack again paid off when he removed Bailey for 45 with what some perceived a dubious lbw for a briskly made 45. When Whitehead had the number 6 Bolton caught at leg gully things were looking good for the 2s with Kirby 5 down. However Smith was still in and continually frustrating the Cosby attack as chances fell just short or went between gaps. A few expensive overs from Bills looked to have gave the momentum back to Kirby but Sullivan picking up 2 stumpings off Bills and a catch at cover from Baker again off Bills took the wind out of Kirbys sails. Despite some near misses White could not remove Smith as he carried his bat for 80 and Kirby finished on 225 for 8 which looked about par.
After tea Cosbys openers Meredith and Sullivan were sent out with the instructions to set a platform from which the 2s could chase the achievable target of 226. Unfortunately this did not arrive as both openers fell early, Sullivan bowled by Bailey and Meredith bizarrely caught at point off Fahad playing a forward defensive. The 2s were precariously poised at 3 for 2. When Foxall was bowled for 7 again by Bailey the 2s were staring down the barrel at 16 for 3. However this brought Cox and Baker together at the crease and the pair rescued Cosbys innings with some fine batting. Firstly defying the dangerous openers and then punishing the rather mediocre change bowlers. Cox was in particularly fluent form and Baker appeared happy to play the supporting role. Cox played some great shots in his innings of 59 as the pair put on 85 before Cox fell with score on 101.
After the dismissal of Cox, Baker took over dominating a partnership of 60 with Sausage in which Baker passed his 50 playing some excellent late cuts and pull shots. When Saus fell for 13 nerves began to jangle in the Cosby camp. Victory looked improbable with only a few overs to go but the target of a bonus point for reaching 176 was easily obtainable. The dismissals of Cooper for 2 and White for a duck made it a nerve wracking finale, but the 2s held out for the draw with Baker finishing 74 not out and the 2s closing on 176 for 7.
Result: Losing Draw
Points: Kirby 17 points, Cosby 8 points
MOM: Nick Baker, his innings guided the 2s to safety as he rarely looked in trouble. Ably assisted by Coxy who played a great innings as well.
Verdict: A reasonable result against one of the divisions better sides, however if we want to compete for promotion early innings batting needs to be more disciplined and the fielding needs to be sharper.
