Billesdon II v Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at
Cosby Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts
Match report
The second team arrived in Billesdon to be greeted by a damp looking pitch and small looking boundaries against the pace setters in division 7. Captain Sos won yet another toss and again invited the opposition to have a bat on what was a drying wicket.
The 2s made a good start with both the returning Lee “Captain Scarlet” Atkinson and Big Phil Needham in miserly form with the ball. Acko provided the early breakthroughs removing one of the Billesdon openers and the dangerous looking number 3. Neddy got in on the act removing Billesdons other opener with a caught and bowled that also provided the days comedy moment. The ball looped up to extra cover and Phil hared after it not realising that Crouching Tiger Hidden Meredith was also in the vicinity. Now this was a distinctly catchweight contest and everyone was getting ready to bury Nige in Billesdon. However at the last minute he spotted Phil and the generations of Ninja warriors in his family must have passed something onto Nige as he left the ground with what was described as a Jet Li type assault on Big Phils knee. Phil was fortunately ok and still took the catch as both combatants were left grounded.
The early bowling successes continued as Phil picked up another wicket and Acko bowled brilliantly to finish with 5 wickets on his comeback game. Young Tom Measures came into the attack and continued where Phil and Lee had left off, bowling 6 overs for 6 runs and picking up 2 wickets. At the end of the innings the spin twins of Baker and Bills came into the attack(note I gave you top billing Baker) and Baker clearing up the last man with Coxy taking his third catch of the innings as Billesdon were skittled out for 72.
After an excellent tea spent filling out Euro Predictors (cheers lads) Gok and Russ were sent out to chase down the modest total and got off to a good start thanks to Nigels typical defiance and Sullys trademark aggression at the top of the order including a six with a shot that would have looked more at home on the wimbledon centre court than a cricket pitch. The score got up to 40 in reasonable time before Russ returned a simple catch before departing for 18. Coxy and Rich Fairbrother came and went with little impact on the scorecard but Nige and Baker saw the 2 s home in style and with plenty of overs to spare, for a comfortable 7 wicket victory.
Result: Won by 7 wickets
Points: Billesdon 1, Cosby 24
MOM: Excellent all round bowling performance lead by the returning Lee Atkinson who took 5 for 31 off his 16 overs.
Verdict: The best performance of the season so far with the ball and in the field. Bowlers bowled with discipline and the fielding was sharper than it has been all season. Continue like this and we maybe able to push for promotion after all.
