Match report Sheriff takes 6 wickets as Outwoods outclassed!!!

Match Report: Cosby II vs Loughborough Outwoods II, Saturday 19th July 2008.

The 2s were back on home soil for the first time in 3 weeks and confident of victory against lowly Loughborough Outwoods. This was despite the somewhat depleted nature of the side due to holidays and 1st team call-ups. Things started well as Saus won the toss and decided to bowl first after 2 non-to convincing displays when batting first.

Things started well in the field when Paul Wood got a wicket 4th ball of the innings, after bowling a half tracker that ballooned to Bickle at long off for a smart catch. Things improved further in the 2nd over when Phil Needham removed Loughborough’s other opener to a catch behind by Russ Sullivan that appeared as if only Phil and the batsman knew he’d hit. The order of events were Phil bowled, Russ caught it, Phil (and only Phil) appealed and the batsman walked off. When Neddy removed the number 3 a few overs later all seemed well, the bowlers were well on top and Outwoods were 30 for 3.

At this juncture it would be fair to say that the 2s let their standards slip a bit and became generally a bit sluggish in the field, although actual mistakes were few and far between. The main cause of this sloppiness was probably frustration at our inability to remove Loughborough’s number 4, who was in the middle of playing one of the most bizarre innings seen on victory park for a while. He appeared to have been practicing the Chinese cut as he must have played it 10 times with the ball evading the stumps by millimetres each time. When he wasn’t inside edging the ball to all corners of fine leg he was playing that many shots in the air we thought it only a matter of time til he puts one in someones hands. When the field was up it went over our heads, so we started deeper and they started dropping short. How he stayed in for so long was a miracle - for his sake I hope he did the lottery on Saturday night because Saturday was definitely his lucky day. Saus introduced his spin twins (Sheriff and Billso) to the attack to remove numbers 4 and 5. Andy quickly removed the number 5 and after a short rain break we finally got rid of the number 4 thanks to a run out from Rich “The Cat” Fairbrother.

After some resistance from Outwoods 2 young batsmen, Billso was replaced by Woody and Sheriff came to life with the ball as once the 2 youngsters were removed the rest of the team didn’t last especially long. Sheriff went on to claim the remaining 5 wickets and finish with 6 for 34 as Loughborough were bowled out for 131 in the 33rd over.

Bowling them out quickly meant the 2s were going to have to bat before tea for 12 overs. Russ Sullivan and Foxy were this weeks opening pair and despite some decent opening bowling by Faull and Butt the pair settled to their task with Russ in particular scoring freely. Tea arrived with no wickets down and 50 on the board. Tea was spent listening to Ken waxing lyrical on trains so it was no surprise we wanted to get back out in the middle quick. The bowling after tea was little better than before and Sullivan went about smashing it again, although in his innings of 53 he managed to be dropped 3 times, including once on 49 going for his 50 and then nearly being run out when he realised he was just standing half way down the pitch. He got the run and ended up picking up a second for the overthrow from the run out attempt.

Sullivan was caught on 53 and then Foxy decided he would start getting on with it, batting in much the same manner that Sullivan had been. He hit a couple of sixes back into the car park, was dropped twice and made Loughborough pay for some pretty ropey bowling. Foxy ended up getting bowled for 49 (jug avoidance?) much to the delight of Russ who didn’t want Mark to outscore him. We were in touching distance of victory with youngster Curtis Holloway and the not so young Steve Bickle at the crease. Despite some pretty ordinary running between the wicket we reached our victory target with overs to spare to complete a comfortable victory.

Result: Cosby win by 8 wickets

Points: Cosby 24 points, Outwoods 2 points.

MOM: Good runs from Foxy and Russ but MOM this week goes to Andy Gray for his 6 wickets that set up the win.

Verdict: Not our strongest performance of the season but a comfortable victory over pretty limited opposition.
