Match report Batting failures cost 2nd XI against Greenfields

Match Report: Cosby II vs Loughborough Greenfields II, Saturday 30th August 2008.

The 2nd team arrived in Loughborough (eventually) to take on lowly Greenfields and were confident that the promotion charge would be maintained after the previous weeks winning draw against Billesdon. Saus managed to lose another toss but disappointment soon made way for relief when The Greenfields skipper said they would bat meaning Saus got his wish of bowling first anyway.

Other than Woodys somewhat wayward first over things started well in the field for the 2s as runs were proving hard to come by as both Woody and Big were bowling good lines and Neddy in particular was looking a threat. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 12th over when Phil picked up 2 in the over with arguably the 2 worst balls he bowled all day. A full toss hit straight to Woody at short fine leg and another full toss that hit the stumps via a combination of bats and pads.

Gaz Kirby was introduced to the attack and managed to pick up a wicket in his 1st over after another catch of the season contender from Andy “Paul Collingwood” Gray. Sheriff took the catch diving forward one handed a matter of inches off the floor at gully for his 2nd stormer of a catch in 2 weeks. At the 15 over drinks break the 2nd team were well in control with Greenfields 35 for 3. When Neddy picked up his 3rd wicket soon after at 40 for 4 Greenfields appeared to be wobbling. However their veteran opening bat was still at the crease and continued frustrating the Cosby bowlers. At this point of the game things went into a bit of a stalemate with both Kirby and Big giving the Greenfields batsman problems but the 5th wicket was proving elusive. The score had been nudged into 70s and Phil was taken out of the attack after an excellent 14 over spell taking 3 for 37.

Sheriff was brought into the attack and he continued his good wicket taking form taking 3 quick wickets including the Greenfields opener for a patient 47. After his initial burst of wickets Andy appeared to lose a bit of rythym as the occasional long hop uncharacteristically got sent down and Greenfields managed to hit a few boundaries. Kirby was still bowling well at the top end and removed the number 9 to a catch behind from Russ Sullivan for a much deserved 2nd wicket. Kirby eventually finished with 2 for 38 off his 13 overs. Bills came on at the death and despite a few lusty blows from Loughboroughs skipper the score was kept relatively in check especially after his dismissal to leave Loughborough finishing their innings 149 for 9.

After an excellent tea (the apple slice cake things receive a 5 star rating from this report writer) the 2s prepared themselves for the run chase confident that they could get the job done despite letting Greenfields get 15 or so more runs than at one stage looked likely. The confidence (perhaps over confidence) in our batting soon appeared mis-placed as Loughboroughs young opening bowlers Parker and Amir looked threatening. However it was a less than threatening delivery that took our first wicket as Foxy slapped a half tracker straight to cover for just 8. When Nige was bowled by what looked a good delivery from Parker a few overs later the 2s were 22 for 2 and we realised that getting the runs would be far from plain sailing.

What followed can only be described as the 2s worst batting display of the year as a cacophony of wickets began to fall thanks to a combination of poor shot selection, poor running and some decent bowling. Coxy, Russ, Frank, Saus all came and went making little impact on the score leaving the 2s staring down the barrel at 60 for 6. Gaz Kirby and Woody were at the crease and due to Woodys heroics at times with the bat this season people still felt the win was achievable. They took the score up to 75 before Kirby edged a good one from Parker to leave us 7 down. Neddy came out to bat and still we felt a win was possible as Phil and Woody offered the first stab of resistance. The pair had taken the score past 90 when Woody got a thick edge behind and was well caught at slip. At this point Sheriff came into bat and he and Phil manged to push the score up to 109 thanks to some good batting from both when Phils mis-timed pull ended up caught at mid off. Billso came out to bat but didn’t last long, the score was on 113 when Billso slipped going for a single to get Andy on strike and was run out for zero ,meaning the 2s were bowled out for 113.

Result: Cosby lose by 36 runs

Points: Greenfields 24 pts, Cosby 4 pts

MOM: Phil Needham gets MOM for his excellent bowling spell and top scoring with the bat with 17.

Verdict: A terrible display from the top 6 chasing a relatively modest total. Too many wickets were given away and left the lower order with too bigger mountain to climb. All to do in the remaining weeks of the season if promotion is to be achieved.
