Match report
Phoenix rise to the occasion as Sunday XI struggle for runs!
Match Report: Cosby Sunday XI v Phoenix; Sunday 20th July 2008
The Sunday XI this week entertained mystery opponents Phoenix with the burning question “Who the bloomin’ hell are they?” Turns out they only play away games and come from all over Leicestershire and the East Midlands. There was some confusion over the make up of the side at the start of the game due to Lee “Phonebox” Atkinsons early morning withdrawal and skipper Matt Bills inebriated state the night before (Blue Aftershock, never a good idea!).
Things started positively as the Phoenix captain called tails and the coin came down heads and Billso had no hesitation in batting after surveying the pitch and conditions and deciding he needed another couple of hours to sober up before doing anything overly energetic.
Things began well when the action started, Hursty and Curt were opening the batting and both appeared to be enjoying themselves, with Curt in particular getting away quickly. Curt had raced to 15 before he went for one cut too many and dollied a catch to point. This brought Nige to the crease and Mr Miagi had never scored so freely as he hurried to 21 before playing a woeful shot to get caught out. Through all this Hursty was looking in fine form and at 100 for 3 (the less said about Franks innings the better) the Sunday side looked set for a big score. Hursty and Podge looked in complete control until Hursty got dropped at cover and then shortly afterwards got bowled for 46. Lewis quickly followed him back to the pavilion for a brisk 25 and after this no-one really bothered the scorers too much other than Gaz Kirby hitting a few lusty blows before falling to one of the catches of the season. The Sunday side ended up bowled out for 138 in the 35th over with Ellis left as the not out batsman.
Due to our collapse Pete had not yet arrived to sort the tea out so after consultation with the Phoenix skipper it was decided we would go out to bowl for 10 overs before tea. The new ball pairing of Kirby and Measures bowled unchanged in the session and both bowled well with Kirbo picking up a wicket 1st over and Tom bowling 5 economical overs and at 25 for 1 after 10, Cosby were well pleased with their start.
After tea a new bowling partnership re-started things with Woody bowling from the rugby pitch end and Frank at the car park. Frank managed to pick up 2 for 17 off his 5 overs. After Franks spell Podge was brought on after weeks of trying to get a bowl. It would be fair to say he bowled a bit short and the Phoenix batsman took a liking to him with their number 6 putting one of his deliveries on the road via the library roof, meaning Lewis has acquired the new nickname of Library. Woody bowled through for his 8 overs taking 3 for 21 (disproving the myth he can’t bowl that end?) and set up Cosby with a chance of winning with Phoenix 100 for 6. Billso replaced Woody and Curt replaced Library Todd and when the skipper took a wicket in his 2nd over things were still looking good at 110 for 7. However we had been unable to remove the number 6 who went on for his 50 and a couple of loose overs meant Phoenix were able to get over the winning line with a few overs to spare.
Result: Phoenix win by 3 wickets.
Verdict: Some decent batting early doors but no-one went on to get the big score they should have against pretty average bowling and then the trademark Cosby collapse meant we were well under par and despite a decent bowling performance
we were just unable to get the win thanks to a good innings from the Phoenix number 6.
MOM: A couple with claims with Hursty the pick of the batsmen and Kirbo bowling excellently first up but this weeks Man of the Match went to Paul Wood for his 3 wickets and 8 economical overs in the middle of the Phoenix innings.
