Match report
Batting Failures Condemn Cosby to Third Defeat on the Bounce
MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Kirby Muxloe, Victory Park, Saturday 9th May.
Cosby 1st XI arrived at their home ground after a week of off pitch revelations, but more importantly, off the back of two comprehensive defeats in the opening two games of the season. With skipper, Matthew Hurst looking for a stronger team performance all round, the luck deserted him at the coin toss and Cosby were asked to have a bat.
With regular opener Sampson arriving later, the makeshift openers of Simon Whitehead and Thorpe strode out to the crease with the aim of getting Cosby off to a good start. However, after negotiating the first couple of overs, both openers found themselves back in the hutch having been removed for 4 and 7 respectively. With Cosby’s wicket’s bounce behaving in its usual slow and low way, the emphasis was to get on the front foot.
Rob Odell came and went after attempting a pull shot to a half-tracker. The ball held up on the tricky surface, which meant that Odell was so early on the shot, he had time to swing another three times before he struck out to a well taken catch at Mid-on.
Bayliss had been steadily accumulating runs at the other end and looked settled until he was undone by a good slower ball, from Kirby Muxloe’s impressive opening bowler. Both Sampson and Hurst got starts, but wickets continued to tumble, and Cosby found themselves in a familiar position for this season, in trouble at 64 for 6.
The remaining batsmen were left with the task of repairing the innings and batting the overs out. Meredith offered some resistance but wickets continued to fall and Cosby were all out after 44 overs for just 105 runs, with Meredith finishing not so high and dry on 20 not out.
The tea interval came and went and Cosby took to the field. After a team huddle, which saw Meredith the victim of crushed balls and an elbow to the nose thanks his poor decision to stand next to Cookie, a rousing Churchillian speech from the skipper followed, and the 1sts set about defending their low score, with a good attitude.
Hurst and White opened the bowling and both bowled good tight lines, restricting Kirby Muxloe’s scoring. Stumpy got the breakthrough as the Kirby opener nicked a good ball for a regulation catch by Dave ‘I only catch the ones that matter’ Thorpe.
In a much improved bowling and fielding display, Hurst got in on the act and took some good wickets, including a bowled, a caught behind and a controversial lbw, that would have hit the stumps, had the batsmen not hit the ball…! Either way Hurst had a well deserved three wickets for 57 after bowling straight through for 17 overs.
With the game slowly ebbing towards Kirby, there was plenty of keenness in the field to restrict the runs. On one occasion, however, with the ball heading towards the boundary, Stumpy rushed round to cut it off and after a diving stop he succeeded in preventing Four. Unfortunately, Kempy's young lad had also seen the ball coming, and after running on the pitch to collect the ball, Whitey's follow through from his dive lead to his boot catching the poor lad square on the nut! A couple of stitches later and the young lad was ok and will be able to tell everyone how he picked up a cool scar and how he went up against Whitey, who on this occasion was able to proclaim that at least he picked on someone his own size!
Cookie bowled well for his 9 overs and fellow spin twin Andy Gray had a bash, but both remained wicketless and Kirby Muxloe achieved their target after 36 overs.
RESULT: Lost by 6 wickets
POINTS: Cosby (3) Kirby Muxloe (24)
MOM: Man of the match goes to Matt Hurst, for his mammoth spell of good tight bowling, claiming 3 wickets in the process.
VERDICT: Batting failures again cost the Firsts any realistic chance of defending a decent total, but a much improved attitude in the field and a better bowling display delayed the inevitable defeat. The team must build on this next week.
