Match report Hurst Stars with the Bat as Cosby 1sts Record First Win of The Season

MATCH REPORT: Cosby Cricket Club 1st XI v Electricity Sports, Sat 06 Jun 2009

Cosby First XI recorded their first victory of the 2009 season with four balls to spare, in a tense encounter with Electricity Sports. Matt Hurst (121) starred with the bat to set-up the victory which saw them move off the foot of the table.

With the World Cup 20/20 getting underway in England, typical cricketing weather swept the country. Needless to say, rain was in the air but after the mornings drizzle, rain would not trouble the Victory Park Ground for the rest of the day.

In a rare moment of success with the coin, Electricity Sports were asked to bat first. With the skipper still sporting a hamstring injury, the ball was thrown to Alex White and Ben Croucher who both bowled well and economically. However, both bowlers would remain wicketless.

Wicketkeeper Dave Thorpe continued to build on Cosby's impressive injury list after he ended up pulling a muscle a few overs in stretching for a leg side delivery. This lead to Simon 'The Cat' Whitehead taking the gloves for the rest of the innings, and Thorpey watching the rest of the game from the sidelines. With the Second XI match vs Gracedieu 2nds already called off due to the weather, Paul Wood came on as substitute fielder.

After a competent start from the visitors, it was Rob Dawkins who made the breakthrough, bowling the opener. However, that would be the only wicket in the innings that would fall to the fast bowlers, and with the Electricity Sports innings gathering momentum, Cosby turned first to Roger Cook and then Andy Gray, who would eventually take 4 and 2 wickets respectively.

However, Electricity Sports continued to score well (aided by a fielding performance which saw a number of dropped catches and mis-fields) and finished up on 229-7. The poor performance in the field put pressure on batsmen to go out and bat well, but at lunch, it was felt that whilst they hadn't done themselves any favours, the target was chasable.

Hurst and Sampson strode out to the crease, and after a few overs, began to stroke the ball around with confidence, regularly finding the boundaries. The duo laid the foundations for the run chase, with the opening partnership worth over one hundred for the first time this season. However, soon after, Sampson fell for a well made 37, which signalled a return to form for the out of sorts opener.

Hurst continued to play his shots and soon passed 50. Whitehead joined him at the crease and continued to push the innings along and when he was bowled for 30, the partnership had been worth a valuable 89 runs. Hurst went on to gain a well made Century in what would prove to be a massive innings in the Cosby run chase. Meredith came to the crease with seven overs to go, and Cosby needing a run rate of 5 per over, to secure their first win of the season.

The pair continued to rotate the strike, but with Meredith falling to a catch at deep mid-on, Rob Dawkins came to the crease. He hit a quickfire 11 runs, including a huge 6 that somehow bounced between all the cars in the carpark.

However, with Cosby chasing the runs to stay on target for the win, wickets began to tumble, with Crouchie, Frank and Cookie all falling cheaply. In the process, Roger Cook earned himself a golden duck, his third no score of the season, which proudly takes him to the top of the 2009 Duck Cup Standings!

During this period Hurst was also caught, bringing his fine innings of 121 to a close, and Cosby to within sight of victory. However, Cosby's late tumble in wickets left them 8 wickets down going into the final over with Cosby needing 5 runs off 6 balls. Whitey and Sheriff were at the crease, and with only an injured Dave Thorpe left to go in (who could barely stand up...!) things were down to the wire.

With a swing and miss from the first ball, nerves on the side lines were getting freyed. However, the very next ball, Sheriff swung at a good ball on a length, and smashed it back over the bowlers head and just out of reach of the fielder on the boundary for a maximum, and 22 points, lifting Cosby off the bottom of Division 3 in the process.

Man of the Match: With his innings of 121, man of the match this week has to go to the Skipper, Matt Hurst, who all but guided his team to victory. Special mentions to Charlie Sampson and Simon Whitehead who supported with two very good partnerships.

Verdict: After a very ordinary fielding performance which left Cosby chasing more than we should have been, a fine display of batting, notwithstanding the late tumble of wickets, allowed Cosby to scrape over the line for a just about deserved victory and more importantly, 22 points.
