Match report 29 Jun 2009 : 1st XI hold out for draw at Kegworth

MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Kegworth Town II, Away, Saturday 28th June 2009

Yet another depleted Cosby 1st XI arrived at Kegworth to be greeted by a picturesque ground and what looked like a very flat track and fast outfield. It was perhaps a little curious then, that after winning the toss the skipper elected to bowl.

Whitey Jnr and Dawko opened up and the facility predictions proved to be correct as the ball soon began to hit the fence at a rate of knots! It was no surprise when Cookie and Sherriff were introduced into the attack after 10 overs but this decision was not met kindly by the young Kegworth Opener who after hitting Omar out to long off felt there was no point in playing anymore as it was a waste of an afternoon!

The Kegworth Openers continued to dominate and whilst at times the cosby bowling was not fantastic the flat track and no real turn meant runs were easy to score. Both openers looked likely to score hundreds but amazingly they both holed out within an over of each other to good catches by debutant Gus Hirst. However, with the score at 200-2 off just 30 overs Cosby were starring down the barrel of a massive total.

After trying a few different things in the shape of Umar Gul, Whitey Snr & Frank, The skipper return to Cookie & Sherriff to try and take some wickets to get a few points. It worked, mostly due to Kegworth trying to get a big score, as the pair picked up a further 5 wickets between them. 2 run outs from Bayliss and Cookie meant that Kegworth finished on 291-9 a score that was likely to be well beyond Cosby.

After a non-descript tea Cosby went out to bat feeling positive about the run chase but probably knowing that winning the game was highly unlikely. The Kegworth attack was aggressive from the start and the ‘chat’ in the field was highly charged as Kegworth tried to unsettle the Cosby top order. On reflection you would say it worked as Whitehead (2) Bayliss (4) and Thope (23) all succumbed to the pressure and Cosby were 36-3 after 9 overs.

The rest of the innings was about survival with the captain and Gus at the crease determined to dig in and not crack under the intense pressure. Both battled hard and after the odd nervy shot both displayed a calm assurance that was needed.

As the intensity increased so did the verbal exchanges from the Kegworth side. At times they were unnecessary and verging on out of order but there willingness to focus on Cosby instead of themselves only aided the Cosby efforts. Gus was finally out in the 38th over for an excellent 38 and young Frank Spencer strolled out to join Damien and see the game home. The Earl survived one or two close calls and was dropped at slip but protected his team mates by lasting until the final over. He was caught for 6 trying to get cosby to 166 but he didn’t have to worry as Mikey White came in and hit his first 2 balls for 4 and claim a bonus point. Cosby finished on 166-5 with Matt Hurst 58 not out. It was a great effort by the skipper who batted for 2hrs 15mins and 38 overs in determined fashion.

Kegworth were generally not impressed with Cosby and I can understand why. But they failed to acknowledge the position of the game and the strength of the opposition. A declaration should have been made at 260/70 to give them extra overs but more than that the bowlers just didn’t attack the stumps enough. Had they focused more on taking wickets with the ball and not with their mouths then they would probably have won the game against an under strength Cosby team.

Kegworth are a strong team with some very good players and they will not lose many games in this division. Cosby can be happy with their performance. Sometimes you have to accept when you are beaten but what Cosby will never do is roll over and die and if you cannot respect that then you should not be playing the game.

RESULT: Losing Draw

POINTS: Cosby (7) Kegworth Town II (17)

MOM: Has to go to Matt Hurst for his defiance with the bat

VERDICT: on reflection not a bad performance even though we were second best
