Cosby Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts (24 points)
Match report
2nd XI secure opening day victory over local rivals
Cosby II vs Enderby II, 25th April 2009
The sun was shining, the ground looked the part and Nige was getting abuse from all quarters, everything was set for the start of the season for the mighty 2s. Things started in positive fashion as well when Saus won the first toss of the season and asked the young looking Enderby side to have a bat.
Saus decided a little and large opening bowling attack was the order of the day as Whitey and Big were given the new ball. The decision proved to be the correct one as both Alex and Phil both seemed to hit their straps from pretty much ball one. The breakthrough arriving early on when Phil had Weaver caught by Nige at cover. Not totally sure who was more surprised that he’d held it Nige or the rest of us. Things improved a few overs later when Whitey removed the dangerous looking number 3, getting the edge and last seasons wicket keeper of the year got his first dismissal of the season. This led to an early precession of wickets as Enderby crumbled to 30 for 5 with Phil picking up 4 wickets despite his back giving him problems.
Phils sore back meant he had to come out of the attack and Tom Measures was introduced who proceeded to bowl in good areas just with no luck as Enderby offered a slight stab at resistance. Whitey continued toiling away at the Chat Dome end but didn’t get the wickets his spell deserved finishing with 1 for 12 off his 10 overs. The score had been taken into the 60s when Saus turned to veteran bowler Paul Wood who proceeded to give the Enderby batsmen problems. The number 7 was so clueless against Woody he could not lay a bat on any of his deliveries and it was no surprise when Woody cleaned him up despite bowling a flurry of wides. When old man Wood picked up his 2nd wicket a few balls later Enderby were 7 down with only 2 wickets remaining due to only having 10 men.
Frank came on at the Chat Dome end to replace Whitey and what followed will surely be one of the more bizarre incidents of the season. The young number 9 took his guard and then proceeded to face up the delivery with his bat facing in completely the wrong direction. With all of us hoping he didn’t hit it (who knows where it would have gone?) Lady Di proceeded to send one by the batsmans off stump. Informed by his colleague that he was holding the bat the wrong way round he faced the next delivery in more orthodox fashion and proceeded to get bowled.
This brought in another youngster as the last man who minutes before had been playing on the swings. To give you an idea how young he was, he appeared to be just a couple of inches taller than Whitey. At the other end was Enderbys opener who to be fair had batted pretty well and he realised now he was going to have to face as much of the strike as possible. Therefore it was no surprise when he got run out by Saus taking a suicide single. The 2s had bowled Enderby out for just 75 in exactly 28 overs.
Having skittled Enderby so cheaply the 2nd team had 17 overs to negotiate before tea and 62 overs to chase the modest total. The batsmen were given the instruction that there was no rush and to bat sensibly and we should win comfortably. In the first couple of overs this appeared as if it was going to be the case as Gok and Russ got the score quickly up to 14 thanks largely to some wayward Enderby bowling.
However what followed was a bit of a keystone cops innings Russ was the first man to fall for a suspicious looking lbw for just 1. The very next ball, Nige full of the spirit of his kamikaze forefathers went for a single when the ball was already in the fielders strong hand and proceeded to get run out by a street. On his way back to the pavilion all the rage at the decision he had just made erupted out of Gok as he threw his bat. It went about half a metre!
More rather unimpressive batting followed as Treacle Feet was the next lbw victim and the 2s were 20 for 3. What followed was the first (only) period of decent batting in the innings as Curtis Hollway and Suas batted sensibly to take the score up to 49. Saus had moved his way happily to 14 when he smited a delivery for 4 off Enderbys change bowler. When the bowler sent down an equally long hop next ball Saus tried the same thing and chopped the ball onto his own stumps. This brought Frank to the crease who lasted 2 balls before getting caught at gully. Woody was the next to stroll out to bat and he and Curt saw out the overs to tea which we reached at 51 for 5.
After an encouraging start to the season on the tea front (Pasta and Fruit were well received) we went back out to bat giving the veteran Wood and the youngster Holloway instructions to see us home. The pair and the steady stream of wides provided took the score into the 60s when Woody decided to have a big heave and got bowled leaving us 6 down with still 8 runs needed. Whitey went out to bat went on to miss every ball he faced, but it didn’t matter as the Enderby bowlers saw us home with successive wides to take us to our victory target with Whitey 0 not out and Curt 12 not out.
Result: Cosby win by 4 wickets.
Points: Cosby 24 points, Enderby 2 points
Quote of the Day: Whilst fielding Russell stops the ball behind the stumps by literally falling on it.
Russ: If all else fails just jump on it.
Woody: Isn’t that Whiteys pulling technique?
MOM: Has to go to one of the bowlers who all hit their straps from pretty much ball one. Phil Needham gets it for his four wickets which set up the victory as well as bowling through the pain barrier.
Verdict: A definite performance of 2 halves. The bowling was good and the fielding was decent. However the batting save for Curtis and Saus left a lot to be desired. We did enough against weak opposition to get the season off to a positive start although there is obvious room for improvement.
