Loughborough Greenfields II vs Cosby II, 23rd May 2009

Another much changed side congregated at Victory Park for the 2s visit to Greenfields. On arrival in Loughborough Veteran Captain Paul Wood had announcements to make. Firstly about health and safety and Greenfields ability and secondly the inaugural presentation of the “All the Gear but No Idea” T-shirt. This weeks lucky winner was Usain for last weeks mis-directed run out attempt.

Woody went out for the toss and kept up his 100% record as he lost another one. Again it made little difference as the Greenfields skipper elected to bat so Veteran got his wish of bowling first. Meanwhile in the dressing rooms, Trigger was busy showing off his bodily functions. Displaying for everyone the biggest lump of snot anyone had ever seen. It wasn’t just his pride in the contents of his nose that disgusted everyone but the way he kept it in his hands and showed anyone brave enough to look.

The 2s went out to field confident after previous weeks bowling performances that Loughborough could be bowled out cheaply. It wasn’t long before the breakthrough arrived when the Weather Man had the Greenfields opener caught by Big at square leg for a duck. Big was soon in the wickets himself with a caught and bowled of the 1st member of the Greenfields super group when he removed Pete Townsend for 1.

It was at this point Greenfields offered their first period of superiority with the bat as the wall like opener Watson and the other member of the super group Curtis Mayfield frustrated Trig and Big. This was despite some aggressive bowling which had the pair hopping like Heather Mills in a 3-legged race.

With the score approaching 40 Veteran decided a double change was needed and brought himself on for Wincey and the Cooper-star for Big. Again the 2 bowlers bowled in good areas but initially with little luck as chances fell just short or just over peoples heads. Coop eventually got the wicket his bowling deserved when Russ took a good catch to remove Mayfield for 16. Drinks were taken with the score 60 for 3 but with the 2s having got through their overs at a good rate Greenfields were going at less than 3 an over. This new policy of jogging through the overs is working on 2 levels, putting pressure on the oppo and also an attempt to get Billso and Fairbrother so they can fit into the “All The Gear But No Idea” T-shirt.

After drinks the 2s came out afresh but with Watson plodding along at one end they knew they were going to have to work hard for success. In this period after drinks Greenfields upped the ante as the hard-hitting Dodsley slapped a few boundaries in agricultural style. He eventually hit an exocet off Cooper to Billso at mid-off that he had no time to get out the way of and held on to the catch.

With Dodsley removed Umpire Ken Needham remembered he had his dog Buster in the van and went off to check on him. On inspection he saw that Buster was only done to medium rare and Ken likes his meat done to a crisp so he put Buster back in for another couple of hours.

Whilst all this was occurring Woody had been toiling away without luck at the top end as Watson got a life when Trig dropped him at mid wicket with a chance that will compete with Woodys caught and bowled attempt at Rothley for drop of the season. With the run rate still pedestrian Veteran brought Big and Trig back into the attack and wickets soon began to fall. Watson departed lobbing a catch to Elvis and the Greenfields skipper picked out Tavare Henshaw both off Neddy. Trigger picked his 2nd wicket when he got one to bounce a bit and Vice Captain Sullivan took the sprawling catch.

Runs were starting to flow at this point (largely due to the most woeful over in the history of cricket from Chris Griffin wannabe Billso) as Greenfields realised they were short of a par score. Ersoy and Foister were the 2 main protagonists scoring 39 and 23 not out respectively. Big managed to pick up another 2 wickets to finish with 5 for 60 and despite the 2nd teams best efforts they couldn’t pick up all 10 wickets as Greenfields finished 9 down for 173.

After a tea spent discussing who we thought would get relegated from the premier league the next day the 2s had to chase a decent total but one we felt was slightly below par. 5th game of the season obviously meant a 5th different opening pair in the form of Russell “Vice” Sullivan and Steve “Kempy mark 2” Henshaw. Things started badly for the 2s as the Greenfields skipper bowled Tavare for just 5. Russ and Coxy took the score into the 30s with a combination of aggression and defiance before Vice was well caught behind off Townsend.

Ten overs gone the 2s were 32 for 2 and started their fight back with Coxy and Usain Fairbrother battling well. Coxy was particularly aggressive in the partnership as he took a liking for the bowling of the Loughborough captain. The pair had put on 43 for the 3rd wicket when Rich got bowled with the score on 75 in the 17th over.

Veteran Captain Paul Wood strode out to bat at 5 with positive intent and he and Coxy continued the forceful batting. Coxy cheered on by his one woman cheer-leading team carried on hitting boundaries regularly and despite giving a couple of chances went on to reach his first 50 of the season. Woody was also batting in positive fashion most noticeably when he cut a ball for 6 into the gardens.

The score had progressed to 109 in the 22nd over when Veteran decided he wanted to put more pressure on the Loughborough fielders by taking a quick single. Unfortunately at the other end it was Coxy rather than Usain Bolt (the real one, not Rich) and Coxy was run out for 58. Matters got even worse when Woody was back in the pavilion after getting a good one and the score hadn’t moved on. The 2s still needed 65 runs but with a batting line up that looked a bit hit or miss they were going to need a big performance from someone.

Coops had been getting some throw downs before batting and missed more than he hit, but fortunately the opposite was true when he was in the middle. At the other end Big was playing the support role and waiting for bad balls to hit. The pair had taken the score to 143 when Big became the 6th man out when he was bowled for 10 in the 30th over. With 31 runs still needed Wincey Whitehead went out to bat with instructions to support the Cooper-Star who was looking in fine form.

At this time Coop appeared to decide the game wasn’t going to last much longer as the next 20 runs came in no time at all. Nerves got a bit strained when we had a couple of low scoring overs but these were soon soothed when Cooper hit 10 off an over to take the scores level. The game was won when Trig got a single in the next over to give us the win by 4 wickets with Coop finishing 40 not out.

Result: Cosby win by 4 wickets.

Points: Loughborough Greenfields II 8 points, Cosby II 23 points.

Quotes of the Day:
Woody attempting to collect subs pre match getting a bit stressed.
Woody: One at a time please you lot, give me a chance!
Henshaw: Easy son, otherwise you’ll end up in the bed next to Sos.

Billso telling Woody he’s not available next week.
Billso: I’m not available next week, I’m in London at Nigels sisters 30th birthday party.
Trigger: How old’s she going to be?

MOM: Lots of good performances this week with Phil and Trig bowling excellently. Coxy set us on the way to our target with his aggressive 58. However MOM this week for Adam Cooper for seeing us home with the bat as well as picking up crucial wickets.

Verdict: A very good win against the best side we’ve played this season. Bowled and fielded well to restrict Greenfields to 173 then batted positively to make a potentially tricky run chase reasonably comfortably in the end. Big game next week!!!
