Match report Cooper makes small child cry as 2nd XI batter Billesdon.

Cosby II vs Billesdon II, 13/06/2009

After the previous weeks disappointment of a rained off game at Grace Dieu the 2nd XI were as pleased as punch to be welcoming lowly Billesdon to Cosby Oval on an extremely temperate day. As per usual veteran captain Paul Wood insisted everyone be at the park bright and early to help with ground preparations, as per usual the majority of the side were there as instructed and as per usual there was bugger all to do as it had all been done by Woody and the ground staff in the morning.

With the best part of an hour to kill before the start of the game Veteran decided some fielding practice was the order of the day. Most of the team obliged except for Billso and Super Cooper who decided some bowling practice would be much more beneficial. It was during this rigorous bowling practice that Billso received a call from Foxy telling him he’d broken down delivering some teeth before coming to the game. After much consternation it was decided that Usain would be sent to fetch Sicknote. As Rich departed the rest of the 2s sat down for a much delayed reading of Nature Notes (keep your eyes peeled for a red kite with its distinctive forked tail) and to see Trigger presented with the “All the Gear” T-shirt.

Woody went out for the toss and it was no surprise when he came back having lost another one. It was equally unsurprising when the Billesdon skipper Blackwell decided they would bat. With Foxy and Rich still on their way Woody delayed our entry on to the field as long as possible (however would we cope without 2 such athletes?), but the C2 unit could only bare Bakers singing for so long and so went out to field just as Rich and Foxy pulled in. By the time we were all in position Glass Hands was on the field with us, albeit without any boots on and Fairbrother joined us an over later.

The early bowling pressure was good (save for Woodys first over) with Wincey Whitehead looking in frugal form with the ball. The breakthrough arrived in the 4th over when Trig bowled the Billesdon captain with what looked a peach of a delivery. Woody took himself out of the attack and brought Frank (promoted from the 1s) on at the chat dome end. Mike and Ben bowled in good areas and ripped through the Billesdon top order with Wincey picking up a further 2 wickets and Lady Di picking up 1. When Kirby removed the dangerous looking Elliott thanks to a catch from Paul “Should have gone to Specsavers” Wood, Billesdon were in real trouble at 45 for 5. They managed to reach drinks losing no further wickets with the score moving to 55. After drinks came Billesdons only stab at resistance with the bat with Bond and Blackwell Junior taking the score up to 82.

The Cooperstar eventually broke the partnership removing Bond for 25 thanks to a catch by Foxy at point. In his next over Hero removed Blackwell Junior with another catch for veteran captain Paul Wood. Coops fortune with the ball continued in the next over picking up 2 wickets with the last 2 balls to leave him on a hat trick. At the other end Chris Griffin wannabe Matt Bills was bowling having never been under so much pressure to not get a wicket. Billso somehow succeeded in getting The Special One another over and Coops was faced with the third member of the Blackwell family who was all of 11 years old and 4 foot high for his hat trick. Faced with such daunting opposition Coops bowled one back of a length and the ball whistled past the poor infants nose. Understandably shaken by the experience the child then backed away from the stumps and started to cry (he was only a small child). Reassured that Super Cooper would not persist with the bodyline bowling he faced up the next ball and managed to get a single. In the very next over Billso removed the might thanks to a stunning Collingwood-esque catch by Cooper at backwards point and Billesdon had been bowled out for 92 in 33 overs and 1 ball.

With 11 overs to negotiate before tea the 2s in their 7th match of the season sent out their 7th different opening partnership in the form of VC Sullivan and Mark “Darren Anderton” Foxall. It was a close run thing this week however as for a brief moment Nick “Baz” Baker was muted as Russells opening partner. Foxy and Vice went out to bat and Russ in particular appeared in a dominant mood and took a liking for the bowling of Billesdons 2 experienced opening bowlers. It came as a bit of a surprise then when Foxy knicked one behind from Blackwell Senior with the score on 21. Coxy strode out to the crease with the cheers of his ever-expanding fan club (up to 3 members when his brother was there) ringing in his ears. However before Billso had even had time to focus his camera Coxy was heading pack to the pavilion bowled first ball, much to the disappointment of the Coxettes.

At 21 for 2 Usain was sent in and he and VC carried on the positive batting and managed to take us up to tea without losing any further wickets and moving the score on to 49. After an excellent tea (extra credit for the water melon and the merciful paucity of any salad) Rich and Russ went back out to bat and carried on where they had left off. The score had progressed to 63 when Sullivan was dismissed for 29 for what looked a very adjacent looking lbw and Golden Balls Cooper came in. Cooper was in a typically destructive/angry mood and this was demonstrated when he lofted his very first ball for 6.

Coops and Rich had taken us to the brink of victory when Fairbrother was the next man out for a well made 19. However this was only a minor blip as Cooperstar and Baker saw us home in double quick time to give us another 24 point victory.

Result: Cosby win by 6 wickets

Points: Cosby II 24 points, Billesdon II 1 point.

Quote of the day: Wincey was once again telling us how good looking he is:
Trigger: You’re all jealous. I’ve got sex appeal. Unfortunately I appear to appeal to other men.

MOM: Good performances all round with Whitehead especially dangerous with the new ball. However MOM this week goes to Adam Cooper for his 4 wickets, 2 catches and 23 not out.

Verdict: A straight forward enough victory over lowly opposition. Perhaps we lost 1 or 2 more wickets than we should have but nothing to be overly concerned about.
