Match report 2nd XI continue winning streak against Outwoods

Loughborough Outwoods II vs Cosby II, 20th June 2009

After the previous weeks comprehensive victory over Billesdon veteran captain Paul Wood was for once faced with a selection dilemma that he didn’t mind as he was picking from an almost full squad. Into the side came Big, Henshaw and Koreas finest export since the Daewoo Matiz for the fixture against what appeared to be an improving Loughborough Outwoods.

The journey to Nampanton proved interesting for a few members of the C2 unit as Neddy noticed that Gok appeared to have a flat tyre on his rear passenger side wheel. After much deliberating and staring at the wheel Nige finally got the tyre inflated and decided we would follow Grice to the ground and see how the tyre faired. Little did Koreas finest know that Big would be navigating and took us to the ground by a somewhat circuitous route. When we finally all arrived in Nampanton the presentations of the “All the Gear…” T-shirt were taking place and largely due to the absence of Coxy, Trigger retained the shirt for a 2nd week.

Woody went out for the toss and when he returned to the dressing rooms could not wait to tell us how Outwoods had been getting improved results in recent weeks and how pleased he was that we were intimidating teams in the field. Eventually he got round to letting the rest of the 2s know that he’d won the toss and they were bowling. The decision to once again bowl first got early rewards as Veteran and Big took the new ball and put plenty of early pressure. The breakthrough soon arrived when thanks to the pressure built up by Woody and Neddy one of Outwoods openers decided to take a single without informing the other and he was run out by Odd Job at cover. Further wickets soon followed as veteran captain Paul Wood picked up 2 (including a catch by Baz that he didn’t realise the batsman had hit) and Big helped himself to 1. At drinks the Outwoods top order had been decimated and they had limped along to reach 35 for 4 after 22 overs, although their number 4 was looking in immovable form.

Soon after drinks one of the days comedy moments arrived as Trigger bowled one that swung the wrong way apparently and was very wide of the off stump, Vice dived across from wicket-keeper in an attempt to stop the ball, got a finger tip on it and deflected the ball squarely on to Bakers left shin. Baz proceeded to go down in instalments and spend the next couple of minutes crying on the ground. The rest of the 2s rushed around Baker, not out of any great concern over his welfare just to be the first to point and laugh at him.

Baker was soon back on his feet and the C2 unit went back to the business of bowling out Outwoods as cheaply as possible. Ginge and Kirbo were beating the bat consistently but the 5th wicket took its time to arrive. It finally came when the number 6 lobbed one up to Gok aff Trigs bowling. In at number 7 for Loughborough was a youngster who had a rather unusual style of batting. Clearly having watched a bit too much Twenty20 the kid was hopping about all over the crease and on numerous occasions gave Wincey the charge. The unorthodox technique worked for a little while but eventually Trigger followed him with one delivery which shook the youngster up and the very next ball he dollied a catch up to Tavare Henshaw at mid-wicket.

All the while wickets were tumbling at the other end Outwoods number 4 was doing his best to get them up towards a total that was somewhere near respectable. This was despite the efforts of Kirbo who consistently beat the bat and was unlucky to finish the day wicket-less. At 70 for 6 Veteran turned to former Chris Griffin wannabe Billso to bowl his unique brand of leg spin. The move quickly paid dividends as Billso picked up a wicket with his third ball thanks to a stumping from Sullivan.

Hero Cooper was brought on to replace Whitehead at the top end and despite the fact there were no under 11s to bowl bouncers at this week was able to pick up a wicket when he bowled the Outwoods number 9. All the while wickets were falling at the other end the Outwoods number 4 remained at the crease and went on to reach a well deserved 50.

King of Spin Billso was still looping them up from the bottom end and was able to remove the last 2 Loughborough batsmen with his combination of flight, drift and spin as well as them hitting 2 low full tosses right down the throat of the Cooperstar at mid-on, leaving Billso with 3 wickets. The 2s had once again bowled a side out inside the 45 overs as Outwoods were dismissed for 108 in 43 overs.

Tea was spent firstly incurring the wrath of the Outwoods tea lady who seemed quite upset that we had managed to have bowled our overs so quickly. This was highlighted when she told Baker off for attempting to pinch a sausage roll before the rest of the tea was ready. Once we were allowed to eat the tea the 2nd team were introduced to new club member Angus Hirst who has joined us from Countesthorpe, who had come to watch the mighty C2 unit. In fact despite the absence of the Coxy and his Coxettes the 2s had quite a fan base in sunny Nampanton as Usain, Foxy and Nikki Wood all came to have a watch.

After tea the 2s were faced with knocking off another modest total and with this being the 8th game of the season naturally this mean an 8th different…oh wait a minute, game 8 brought with it an opening partnership that the 2s had used before in the form of Vice and Grice. The pair got the 2nd XI off to a positive start and were pushing the score along nicely, ably assisted by the constant stream of byes being let through by the inexperienced Loughborough wicket-keeper. Russ appeared keen to push on especially after he pulled a fetlock. It was a bit surprising therefore when Russ fell for 19 bowled by the impressive Taylor. Henshaw soon followed Vice back to the pavilion again bowled by Taylor and his Zorro ball.

At 40 for 2 the Tiddly Wink and Baz were at the crease. Despite primarily using the edge of his bat for the early stages of his innings Gok was batting quite well (he was even able to play his trademark Chinese cut) and was being well supported by Baker. The pair had taken the score into the 70s when Baker was judged LBW by Umpire Ken “I still haven’t moved to Canada” Needham for 12. Veteran Captain Paul Wood was the next man in and again like Gok for the early part of his innings was attempting to play the Outwoods bowling with just the edge of his bat. However once he decided he was just going to swing Woody looked in much better touch even hitting the only 6 of the day. The skipper and Nige had little trouble in knocking off the remainder of the runs and were able to see the 2s home with just the 23 overs to spare, Woody finishing unbeaten on 14 and Gok 30 not out.

Result: Cosby win by 7 wickets.

Points: Loughborough Outwoods II 3 Points, Cosby 24 points.

Quotes of the Day: On arrival at the ground Woody and Ken have been listening to Trig all the way there and are wondering what happened to Nige:
Trigger: I reckon his cars been hit.
Ken: If you don’t shut it I’ll hit you in a minute.

When Gok eventually gets to the ground a conversation is struck up about changing the wheel on his car:
Big: He (Nige) has never changed a wheel in his life I tell ya!
Baz: Don’t worry Nige it should be quite easy, rickshaws only have wooden wheels.

Post game, Trig is in the showers, also in there are the folically challenged trio of Veteran, Billso and Big:
Trigger: Has anyone got any shampoo?

MOM: Lots of contenders this week with pretty much all the bowlers doing their bit. However despite the captains decision MOM this week goes to Nigel Meredith for his 30 not out as well as a catch and a run out.

Verdict: Another impressive performance against a side who had been picking up improved results. Level of performance must be maintained over the next couple of weeks leading up to the top of the table clash with Mountsorrel.
