Match report 27 June 2009: The C2 Unit march on.

Cosby II vs. Melton Mowbray II, 27 June 2009

Early weather news for this top vs. bottom clash was hot & sticky......very sticky, as sticky as when sticky the stick insect got stuck on a sticky bun.
Team news was that with Gok & Billso sharing a sleeping bag at Glasto, last weeks cheerleaders Foxy & Usain reclaimed their places. Trig was also missing, on a weather research mission in Malia, so in stepped the ever approaching father to be, Podge.

Sad news pre-match as there was no time for the latest installment of the 'Nature Notes', however the mood was lifted during the 'warm up' when Kirbs ran to chase an up and under & with eyes firmly fixed on the ball he proceeded to completely demolish the newly erected stumps much to Ken 'trigger' Needham & Colin Bills' obvious disgust. With this the latest member of the 'All the gear, no idea' hall of fame was enrolled.

Captain Woody was nursing a side strain so was unable to inflate the guns before the toss, but this wasn't a great concern when he won the toss and decided to put Melton in.
The start was in danger of being delayed due to a 'naked off' between the skipper and Kirbs. Gaz was determined that he could stay shirtless for longer than Woody. However the veterans experience paid off as Gaz cracked and took to the field.

In the absence of 'Usain-a-like' Gaz Kirbs was selected to open up from the 'Paul Wood' end with Big as his partner from the 'drunk on the bench' end. A steady start with Gaz battling against the left/right hand combination and Big beating the bat 5 times an over and having 2 plum LBW shouts turned down. After a period of half a dozen overs of patient/tight bowling the wickets started to fall....as did the rain (Wincey will be miffed that he missed this one)

It appeared that the sun must always shine in Melton as the top order had no appetite for the wet stuff, until the Melton skipper added some long overdue resistance.
After a period where the wickets had dried up it was decided that a tactical drinks break and double bowling change was needed and the opening pair were replaced after fine 10 over spells (great effort on such a humid day) Now was the turn of 'Goldenballs' Cooper & stand-in Billso - Curtis.

Curtis hit his straps immediately with a good line and length and the ball turning he was unlucky ultimately to only grab one wicket, courtesy of 'safe hands' Podge with one of his 3 catches. The youngster really needs to study Billso's technique and in particular his full toss if he's going to take serious wickets in this division.
With a combination of lusty blows and thick edges Melton were limping up to the 100.

Hero had now realised that as the 35 over mark had been passed, tea could be taken so decided that enough was enough and now was the time to finish the tail off and using his keep 'em guessing bowling and some smart catching (including a sharp one to Foxy at slip, where he not only managed to hold it, but also didn't come to any harm in the process) the tail obviously star-struck duly obliged. Cooper again marched off to a Hero's standing ovation after claiming a career best 5 wicket haul.

After a tea of hearing about Mikeys Malia conquests, it was time for Vice & Grice to begin the quest for 109 runs and maintain the units 100% record, with the instructions to achieve this ASAP.

A good early start as both openers traded boundaries, including Henshaw hitting one to the long boundary and standing in admiration until he finally realised the it wasn't going to make it and a mad dash for 3 followed. Shortly after, he tried to hit another, but only succeeded in spooning one in the air for a simple catch (He really needs to learn the OH NO! shout) But already the 2's were a third of the way to their target.

Vice had by now gone lame again, but the only effect this seemed to have on his batting was everything went to the boundary, to save on running. When he was to follow Grice back to the hutch in the 12th over - courtesy of Ken's crooked finger, again! he had already reached 50 and the unit were now just 40 runs short.

Baker & Usain soon followed, but thanks to a couple of lusty blows from 'hockey shot' Foxy the unit were on the brink of another victory. But being the team player he is Foxy gave his wicket away so that Woody could have the honour of hitting the winning runs for the second week running.

Result: Cosby win by 5 wickets.

Points: Cosby 24 points, Melton Mowbray 3 points.

Quote of the day: When hearing of Ginge's success in Malia
Woody: He has apparently had a result with a Swedish lovely who only spoke 7 words of English, 4 of which were 'do you like shaved'
Henshaw: What were the other 3 - 'Is That It' ?

MOM: With good contributions from all the bowlers and a quickfire 50 from VC the skippers decision was to plump for Coopers' 5 wickets that set up a comfortable victory.

Verdict: Melton were very poor, but we can only beat what is put in front of us. Hopefully with the trip to high flying Mountsorrel next up the 2's can raise their game when required.
