Enderby II v Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 2pm
Cosby Cricket Club Won by 15 runs (24 points)
Match report
14 Jul 2009 : Big takes 7 wickets as 2nd XI get better of Enderby
Enderby II vs Cosby II, Saturday 13th June 2009-07-13
The 2nd team travelled to their tricky looking fixture away at Enderby missing a host of regulars. Veteran Captain Paul Wood was sunning himself in Spain, Hero was going to his sisters birthday party (to be fair it was a big one, you are only 26 once), Tavare Henshaw was looking after his kid, Trigger had been dropped to the 1st team and Gok was spending the weekend up Ben Nevis (not sure what Mr Nevis had to say about this but I’m sure the Tiddly enjoyed himself). This clearly left the 2s a bit thin on the ground especially looking at the bowling.
With Woody away Vice took over the mantle of captaincy and carried on Woodys record as he also lost the toss. With rain about and a wicket that was greener than Ben Spencer the morning after his night on the whiskey it was no surprise that the 2s were asked to have a bat. After a rather dead pan delivery of nature notes from Billso and Torchwood winning his naked off unchallenged, Curt and Russ went out to open innings. The first few overs appeared to be going ok as Vice and Odd Socks were able to pick up singles and get the board going early on. However Enderbys skipper Daley soon settled into a rhythm and provided precious few opportunities to score runs. At the other end Ken was clearly feeling the cold as despite some wide looking deliveries from the young Enderby opener Ken was keeping his hands in his pockets. As the scoring dried up the chirp from the field started rising and the bull-shitometer had reached almost Duntonesque levels when Vice asked the Enderby field to shut up or at least be humorous. He was bowled by Daley the next ball and the 2s were 12 for 1 after 7 overs. Coxy (senior) came out to join Curt at the crease and whether it was down to the absence of the Coxettes (get well soon Zoe) or just because he hadn’t played for 3 weeks he never looked comfortable and it was no surprise when Daley removed Fan Club for 0. This brought Nick “Baz” Baker to the crease and at this point he and Curt dug in on what can be best described as a tough wicket to bat on. The passage of play that followed will not live long in the memories of those in attendance as it was arguably some of the dullest cricket ever witnessed. This is no criticism of Baz or Curt as scoring runs on that wicket was very difficult. The score creeped along at under 2 an over up until the 25th over when Curt was bowled for 18 by Daley by a ball that pitched in the lake that was on a length and shot along the floor.
Sicknote Foxall came out to join Baz at the crease and briefly the scoring rate shot up for a few overs as 25 runs were added in the next 5 overs largely due to Baker taking a shine to the early bowling of Andy “Lurch” Moore and hitting a few boundaries. However Lurch finding his line and the introduction of regular Enderby 1st teamer Johnstone at the shallow end soon put a stop to that and wickets soon began to tumble. Foxy got bowled caught in 2 minds, Baker mis-timed a pull shot and got caught for 29, Big was caught on the boundary, Coxy (the younger) was LBW playing an awful swipe across the line and Usain was well caught at slip. This left the C2 Unit 88 for 8 and just hoping to bat the overs out. Frank and Kirbo took the score up to 97 before Frank had a rush of blood to the head and was promptly stumped off the bowling of Johnstone for 4. Former Chris Griffin wannabe Billso went in for his first bat of the season and he and Torchwood got the score to 102 (to be fair Kirbs got all the runs) before Gaz became Moores 4th victim for a very plum LBW and the 2s had been bowled all out in the 39th over.
Having been shot out for such a low score the 2s cheered themselves up by tucking in to a good tea (no tea of the season contender however, Mountsorrell have blown every other tea so far out of the water). When it came time to go out to field the 2s spirits had lifted and they faced up to the challenge of bowling Enderby out cheaply. Acting skipper Vice was actually very calm about the task ahead and told the troops to stick to what the 2s do well and we would still have a chance of winning the game. With Woody and Wincey absent Big found himself with a new opening bowler partner in the form of Ben “Frank” Spencer. Frank got off to an inauspicious start with his first ball reminiscent of Steve Harmisons opening delivery in the last Ashes series. However Frank was soon able to settle into a rhythm and produced a tidy 5 over spell.
At the other end Big was causing countless problems for the Enderby batsmen, exploiting the same demons in the track that the Enderby captain Daley had done earlier in the day. He soon picked up his first wicket with a delivery that pitched on a length and then in Neddys own words “did all kinds” and bowled the young opener for 0. Further wickets were to follow for Big with the removal of Enderbys other opener for a suspect looking LBW and then removed Enderbys 1st team superstar Johnstone for 0. The number 5 then departed for a very plum LBW the very next ball and the C2 unit had Enderby 20 for 4. At this stage of the innings Enderby started their fight back with Lurch looking in defiant mood and the number 3 hanging around despite looking like a walking wicket. Torchwood came on for Frank at the Pavilion End and continued the good work that Ben had started. Like Ben however Kirbo also went unrewarded despite the good bowling. He was unlucky to have an LBW turned down when Lurch shuffled across his stumps, But his reaction of calling the umpire an f-ing cheat was perhaps a bit harsh especially considering he was only 16 years old.
Big soon removed the number 3 when he left one that came back off the seam and bowled him off stump and Enderby were now 5 down (with Phil having all 5) with a little over 30 on the board. In at number 7 came their captain JD and he appeared determined just to bat some overs in the knowledge that if he and Moore could stay in they had a good chance of winning the game. The pair frustrated Big and Torchwood and Russ decided it was time for the spin twins of Bills and Holloway. The move worked like a charm as both bowlers hit their marks and Billso was able to trap Moore LBW for a hard earned 30 runs. Bills was in the wickets again in his next over when he took a caught and bowled using a far from orthodox technique. The Enderby number 8 hit one back low to Billso and he got down to it for the catch, the ball hit his right hand bounced up hit his left shoulder, rolled across the top of chest and kind of came to rest trapped between his right arm and his body, it was more of a caught and balanced than caught and bowled. In the same over Bills picked up his 3rd victim when he had the number 9 caught by Baz behind the stumps after getting one to bounce a bit. This brought the young number 10 out to bat and he and Daley once again started a resistance to the Cosby bowling with the score creeping along at roughly 1 an over and no real shots being played.
They had taken the score into the 70s when Big was re-introduced to try and finish Enderby off. Big was soon back in the wickets and appeared to achieve the major breakthrough when he got Daley caught behind for a patient 18 to pick up his 6th wicket. In at number 11 was another youngster and so Cosby were confident he wouldn’t last long, however that confidence was soon eplaced by anxiety when he smashed Neddy for a couple of 4s. However in his next over Big trapped the youngster again LBW to finish with the remarkable figures of 7 for 27 and with it bowl the spirited Enderby side out for 87.
Result: Cosby II win by 15 runs
Points: Enderby II 4 points, Cosby 24 points
Quote of the day: At tea Baz and Vice are talking about Baz Junior and his future cricketing career:
Baz: He’s too good to play for us.
Vice: It would be fair to say if you end up playing with your son you’ve failed as a father.
Baz: We still talking about cricket?
MOM: A great effort by all the bowlers after being bowled out for such a low score. MOM has to go to Phil Needham for his remarkable spell of bowling to rip through the Enderby batting order.
Verdict: A hard fought victory against a decent Enderby side on a minefield of a track. The bowling and fielding was again excellent to get the 2s out of jail. Although the track was not good batting needs working on, not so much shot selection just rather how they’re executed.
