Match report 28 Jul 2009 : 2nd XI return to winning ways against Rothley - moving 38 points clear at the top
Cosby II vs Rothley II, 25th July 2009

After last weeks disappointing performance against Dunton Bassett the 2nd team assembled at the Cosby Oval determined to get back to winning ways against Rothley. The side saw 3 changes from last week with Steve Henshaw, Dave Needham and Veteran Captain Paul Wood all returning to the C2 unit. Woody got off to a good start as well when he won the toss for once and decided that the 2s would have a bowl on what looked and turned out to be a decent wicket to bat on.

In the dressing rooms the returning skipper had words of encouragement for the 2s in response to last weeks performance and he also won the naked off unchallenged with Kirbo not present. Russ had earlier presented himself with the “All the Gear But No Idea” t-shirt so the 2s took to the field in front of a below capacity crowd this week due to the closure of the Western Terrace after last weeks crowd trouble.

With Veteran back off his jollies he decided he would open the bowling from the Ben Spencer End with Big as per usual coming in from The Drunk on the Bench End. Big started in decent fashion as he was putting the ball in good areas right from his first over. The skipper on the other hand looked like he had over indulged on the sangria for the past 2 weeks as his radar appeared a bit askew as the ball repeatedly went down the leg side. Despite this the score was not moving at any pace as Rothley crawled along during the early overs with any runs mostly coming from mis-fields by Russ.

In a mirror of last weeks bowling display early wickets were not forthcoming with Phil obviously having run over a black cat on his way to the ground he was that unlucky, 4 times catches went down off his bowling in his opening spell (2 easy, 2 would have been great catches) as well as beating the bat numerous times. Woody saw sense and eventually took himself off and Frank was brought on and this dried the runs up even further. Phil eventually got the breakthrough when he removed the elder of the 2 Rothley openers bowling him off stump. This meant Rothley had 2 youngsters at the crease and for a while the game drifted by with no wickets being taken but equally no runs being scored as at drinks Rothley were 44 for 1. After drinks Frank and Big continued bowling the right lines and Ben having laid off the Glenfiddich on Friday night was rewarded when he bowled the Rothley number 3 and Rothley were now 50 for 2. This quickly became 60 for 3 as Curtis “Gary Pratt” Holloway was able to run out the number 4.

With 20 overs remaining and Rothley going at less than 3 an over Veteran decided it was time for a bit of spin/slow bowling to pick up a few wickets and so turned to former Chris Griffin Wannabe Matt Bills. Bowling at the young opener and another youngster at number 5 Billsos early overs can be best described as a bit of a mixture but he was able to remove the number 5 when he charged down the wicket to the 2s answer to Ajantha Mendis misjudged it and got stumped by Baz who once again had got the nod behind the stumps. With Frank unable to bowl more than 6 gruelling overs due to the ECB directives and the sun shining Veteran decided he would have another go with the ball. His line was a lot better in his 2nd spell although he was helped by bowling the majority of it at left handers. Woody was eventually able to remove the young Rothley opener when he had him caught by Big at cover for 30. At this point the Rothley batsman realised that if they were going to get a half way decent score they would need to get on with it and with 2 senior players at the crease tried to pick up as many runs as they could. Billso was continuing with the Bertie Bassett bowling at the Rugby pitch end and picked up his 2nd wicket when he bowled the number 7 with his doosra.

Rothley had moved up to 115 for 6 when Woody made another double bowling change bringing on Big at the Ben Spencer end and Curt brought on to replace Billso. Phils luck hadn’t improved any whilst he was resting as he continued to beat the bat but yet again could not pick up the wickets he deserved. Curt was having more luck from DOTB end as he got the crucial wicket of the Rothley captain thanks to a good catch by Frank. He was able to get his 2nd wicket when the big hitting number 8 holed out to cow corner where the catch was taken in Fred Carno style by Big. Curt ended up with 3 wickets when he dismissed Rothleys young number 9 (marginally taller than Whitey) thanks to a simple catch by Veteran. With an over to go Rothley were 142 for 9 and Big was bowling at the number 11. When Phils 2nd delivery disappeared over his head for 4 everyone including the Rothley umpire looked a bit surprised. When he tried it again next ball it went straight up to mid on. With no-one anywhere near him and it obviously being his catch there was a loud call of GRICE!!! Henshaw then ran in for the catch, realised it was now going over his head ran back out again and it landed just behind him. This brought about Woodys trademark show of frustration as the cap was thrown on the floor for the umpteenth time this season. A couple more lusty blows from the Rothley tail followed in the over as they finished on 150 for 9.

The 2s went into tea relatively happy with their efforts the general consensus being that Rothley were at least 50 short of a defendable total. Tea was to the usual high standard and everyone marvelled at Franks unique choice of what to eat. It was the first time any of the other members of the C2 Unit had seen anyone eat a meal that consisted entirely of cakes and sausages!

The 2s were sent out to bat with positive intent by Veteran Captain Paul Wood wanting the job done entirely by the top 5 and within 30 overs. With this in mind Tavare and Vice were sent out to open the innings. The pair started in comfortable fashion with the score being pushed on at a steady rate. This was not enough for the assembled members who were far from impressed by the early running between the wickets. The y didn’t realise that Russ had injured his hamstring once again and Henshaw is…err…well, Henshaw. The score had moved onto the 22 when the 2s lost their 1st wicket when Henshaw went after a wide half volley but only succeeded in hitting it to slip to be caught for 2.

Foxy went in number 3 and looked comfy from pretty much ball 1. Sick note and Russ looked very comfortable against the inexperienced Rothley attack with both batting sensibly but when the bad balls came along they were quick to put them away as the pair put on a well paced 50 partnership. The score had moved onto 75 when Russ became the 2nd man out when he hit one straight up to the man at mid-on and was caught for 36. Baz was in at number 4 and he continued the good work that had gone before him as the 2s reached drinks at 90 for 2.

After drinks Foxy and Baz appeared to up the ante as the score went past 100 thanks to some aggressive batting typified when Baker hit a six into the trees by the library. All the while Foxy was still accumulating runs only giving one chance in his innings when he smashed one at the Rothley captain who dropped the catch. The score was up at 115 when Baker became the third man out adding yet again to his collection of weird and wonderful dismissals when he managed to hit a ball with the toe of his bat to the only man on the leg side for an easy catch. Foxy was joined at the crease by the returning Dave Needham and Treacle Feet and Foxy continued pushing the score along. One especially good over saw 17 runs from it and the 2s were in touching distance of their target. Foxy went past 50 for the first time this season as the 2s got closer to winning. The game was finally won when Foxy hit one through the leg side to take the 2s to 151 as he finished 57 not out and Dave was 10 not out. The 2s had won by 7 wickets and with 13 overs to spare, not quite what the skipper asked for but close enough.

Result: Cosby II win by 7 wickets

Point: Cosby II 23 points, Rothley 5 points

Quotes of the Day: Woody is getting changed pre-match and trying to show off his tan:
Baz: I’ve finally worked out who you look like; does anyone remember the band Right Said Fred?

Foxy in the dressing rooms just before tea is describing Grices attempted catch in the final over:
Foxy: All do the hokey-cokey. (This was made even funnier by Foxalls dance he was doing)

During the early part of the Cosby innings club vice president Royston doesn’t think much of the Rothley bowling:
Royston: This bowlings rubbish, I’d still get 50 against it now with one hand behind my back!
Bruce Sampson: And standing on one leg.
Harrop: With one eye shut.
Baz: At night!
Harrop: Using a stump for a bat.
Baz: And you tell this to the kids today and they don’t believe you!

Russ describes the bowling of one of the Rothley team, at least I think that’s what he was on about:
Vice: This boy’s a bit liquorice!
MOM: Lots of people had decent games this weeks with all the bowlers doing their bit. MOM though goes to Mark Foxall for his 57 not out that saw the 2s home for the win.

Verdict: Decent team performance this week. Fielding wasn’t amazing but bowling was tidy and the batting was sensible. Not the strongest opposition we will play but far from the weakest, standards must be kept up over the coming weeks.
