Cosby Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets (24 points)
Match report
16 Aug 2009 : The C2 Unit edge closer to glory
It was a meeting af 1st and 3rd as the C2 unit travelled to promotion rivals Shepshed. Team news - out went Treacle Feet, Torchwood & Trig to be replaced with Odd socks, Baz & the returning Sheriff.
With strict instructions to arrive early Vice & Big were left scratching their heads when they were all alone at the Pudding Bag Lane ground. When the late comers finally arrived all was explained. Frank and his mum were on route to the Cosby Oval when the 'Trig wannabe' managed to catch the hazard lights, the two of them were now perplexed by the flashing lights on the dashboard. Still puzzled they chose to pull over and examine the manual to try and explain what was happening to their car. Ultimately they discovered that the two flashing triangles needed to be pressed to solve the problem. Needless to say that when Frank finally arrived at the ground the 'All the gear...' T-shirt had a winner.
Franks Fables over, next to be unveiled were the betting odds for Vice's latest injury. Paddy Power had obviously been busy during the week compiling odds on Foxy-a-likes first injury.Ingeniously entitled "sully pully" All the clever money was on the pre-match favourites - pulling a calf or hamstring, however there were no takers for 'a woman' at 100-1.
Right Said Fred finally slipped up at the toss, winning one and elected to have a bowl.
Although Bazless at the start (apparently this wasn't a hazard light problem)Big & Frank opened up and pretty much hit their straps from the off. After 3 overs Mockney Baker finally arrived, the bowling was still fairly tight but without any luck, eventually Frank was removed from the attack, to be replaced by Woody.
Shepshed had 50 on the board before finally losing a wicket, when the skipper made the breakthrough, even more surprising was the fact he held a catch!!! although being off his own bowling probably had something to do with this. The second wicket duly followed with a neat catch by Big and by drinks Shepshed were 70 -2. Whilst the wickets hadn't exactly been tumbling, the run rate was hardly express. The Shepshed number 3 was inspiring confidence with the units bowling attack and the number 4 was showing slight resistance he had a knack of playing his sand wedge shots just wide of the fielders. The Thorpedo had now been introduced and early signs were that he had brought the previous weeks luck with him. Finally though the number 4 hit one along way up, with Curtis underneath, as the ball was in the air there were several mumbles 'no chance' but to much surprise Odd socks held on with the minimum of fuss.
Umar Gull then decided to bowl one straight and with a 'KLANG' the bails were removed. What was to follow was a procession of wickets with the long tail finished off by Ghandhi, Sheriff, who enabled Gok to take possibly the catch of the season for the unit. Fielding very short he managed to dive and take the catch with the ball a centimetre above the ground. Even more remarkable was that due to his previous nights excesses he barely had his eyes open...or is that normally the case!!! & Curtis finished the innings off with his 3rd ball. The Shepshed innings closed on a low looking 107.
A decent tea was had, although soured with the news of Darren Bents debut goal for the Mackems. This didn't however hold Baz back, who rather over indulged.
After tea it was Gok & Vice who went out to achieve the seemingly easy target of 108 required at a little over 2 an over. Early signs however weren't good as Gok fell to one which kept a little low, but truth be known the tiddly simply played down the wrong line. Next came Thorpey but unfortunately didn't last long as he shuffled across his stumps, leaving his leg peg exposed and 'KLANG the silver bails were again removed, as was part of the Shepshed dressing room on Thorpeys return.
Now it was the turn of Baz to face the nippy but wild Cook and a Cocky medium pace youth. After an end of over conflab Baz pointed out that Usain had his pads on and we still required 90 runs. This inspired the two who both seemed determined not to lose their wickets. The Youth was now removed from the attack and Cook was becoming wilder with every over. When he bowled his second beamer of the day, this was helpfully pointed out by Vice and enforced by WG that a repeat would result in his removal. After the 50 partnership was brought up Vice slashed hard at a wide one which gave no time for the customary "oh no" and was well caught at Gully, all be it at the second attempt.
Cometh the hour cometh the man, in strode the 'previously super' Cooper, unfortunately the now fallen hero continued his poor run of form when he was caught for just 1 facing just 2 balls and prompting his retirement from Cricket. Now was the turn of the man who is at the foot of the MVP list - Usain.
Baker and the Bolt now batted with a lot of common sense and soon relaxed a nervous Darren Bent fan club. On the brink of victory Nick was trapped LBW for a patient and much needed 40. Woody couldn't quite get his pads on quick enough, so it was odd socks who came in to see us over the line and within just a couple of overs the final dozen runs were scored. Deservedly it was MVP no. 39 who for the second time this season against Shepshed hit the winning runs, and again finished 12 not out. Usain clearly enjoys playing Shepshed and maybe if we could play them everyweek or is that a hint!!!! thus edging the champions elect closer to the title.
Result: Cosby win by 5 wickets
Points Cosby II 24 points, Shepshed Messengers 3 points
Quote of the day: has to go to Franks Fables.
Incident of the day: Usain decides on a quick single, head down he only had eyes for the line, which was unfortunate for the young Shepshed wicket keeper who was to act as Usains brakes. You can only imagine the look of panic in the youngsters eyes as something akin to a train is hurtling towards him and with the agility of well a steam train!! Double whammy Usain hits the poor lad and then falls on top of him!!!After coming round and being pulled out of the hole in the ground the youngster removed the gloves and departed for boundary obviously scarred for life with the sounds of birds ringing in his ears, and counselling highly recommended.
Verdict:
Another impressive fielding performance ensured a comfortable win against a fast wilting Shepshed side. However once again the unit made this harder work than it should have been by losing cheap wickets. Somewhere in there is a big batting performance....somewhere.
MOM - Dave Thorpe - Gandhi should have had at least 4 wickets last week but made amends this week. 4-15 from 10 overs destroyed the messengers middle order
