Match report 2nd XI a step closer to the title after 6 wicket victory

Cosby II vs Grace Dieu II, Saturday 23rd August 2009

The 2nd XI entertained mid-table Grace Dieu in confident mood after the previous weeks victory over title rivals Shepshed left them within 69 points of securing the division 7 title. As the members of the C2 Unit arrived at the ground it became apparent there would be no presentation of the “All the Gear But No Idea” T-Shirt after last weeks custodian Frank had left it at home.

The return of Michael Whitehead to the 2s meant we had the potential of a Trig-off between him and Ben. Mike looked the early favourite when he phoned up the former Chris Griffin wannabe Billso for directions to Grace Dieus ground as he would go straight there. When Billso finished laughing at him he informed Trig that the 2nd team were at home this week and also that they started at 1:30 not 2 o’clock. Trigs response of “Oh I’d better get out of bed then” appeared to have won him the trig –off hands down. However Frank has lived up to his nickname pretty much all season and this week was no exception. Having purchased a new grip for his bat he now had to get it on. Armed with Billsos grip cone he rolled it over the cone and using his shirt for a bit of extra purchase attempted to roll it over the bat handle. With the grip cone now gone it became apparent that Franks shirt was caught up in the grip and his bat was dangling from his torso with Frank trying to figure out what had gone wrong. To free himself from the python like grip of the er…grip Ben had to remove the batting grip and start over. This time not using the shirt the grip was rolled over the cone onto the handle only for it to now be on inside out. Three further attempts to get the grip on ensued but each time it went on it still ended up inside out. The rest of the C2 Unit had been royally entertained by Franks performance and Ben had won the Trig-off in spectacular fashion. How this youngster demonstrates increasing levels of imbecility each week is beyond me.

Woody eventually went out for the toss and once again managed to lose it (how one man can lose so many 50-50 calls is a mystery) and faced with a hot day and a good looking track it was no surprise Grace Dieu decided to have a bat. After a reading of nature notes that appeared to have been written by Enoch Powell (it told us to watch out for blackies…apparently they’re butterflies) the 2s went out to bowl knowing they would have to perform well on what looked a good surface. With Big not available due to injury the 2s opened up Veteran from the Right Said Fred End and Trigger bowling from the Billso and Curtis move the Sight Screen End. Early signs were that our opinions of the pitch were correct as the Grace Dieu batsmen scored at a steady 4 runs per over, aided and abetted by some slightly wayward bowling and pretty average fielding. The breakthrough arrived in the 5th over when Veteran Captain Paul Wood bowled his opposite number and Grace Dieu were 25 for 1.

The wicket seemed to get Woody on track and his bowling became a lot more frugal from this point on. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case for Wincey Whitehead at the other end who continued to bowl too short as runs flowed at a steady rate. Trig was eventually removed from the attack after 12 overs to be replaced by Adam “Hero” Cooper in a move that probably raised a few eyebrows. The 2nd wicket fell soon after when Woody was able to remove the dangerous looking number 3 with a full toss that was well caught by Frank at mid-wicket. In at number 4 for Grace Dieu was a young man that appeared to be wearing a train drivers hat. The score had moved into the 60s when The Special One removed the other opener with a fairly ordinary delivery that got hit straight up and caught by Woody at short fine leg. This brought about a procession of wickets for the Cooperstar bowling Ivor the Engine 2 balls later. He got his next wicket with a “full bunger” that hit the young batsman on the boot right in front of middle stump. His 4th wicket came when he bowled the Grace Dieu number 7 for 8 who to be perfectly honest looked like he was there for a good time rather than a long time. All of a sudden the C2 Unit had Grace Dieu 71 for 6 and appeared well in control.

At the RSF end Frank had replaced Richard Fairbrass wannabe Paul Wood and was bowling with some quite significant pace. At times in his marathon 6 over spell he was bowling too well as the deliveries were too good for the Grace Dieu batsmen to get anywhere near. The period of play that followed with Cooper and Frank bowling brought the Grace Dieu innings to a virtual stand-still with very few runs being scored and equally no wickets being taken.

With the score in the 80s Woody decided a change was needed the wickets had stopped tumbling so turned to Billso for his brand of leg spin from the Drunk on the Bench End and Dave “Umar Gul” Thorpe at the Ben Spencer End. Neither bowler can claim they bowled especially well despite both taking a wicket as Billso was bowling quite frankly dreadfully and Thorpey too short and between them they went for 47 runs off their 6 overs and all of a sudden the score had shot up to 145 for 8 with 10 overs remaining. With Veteran getting fed up of having to pick his cap back up after the bowling of Billso and Umar he brought himself back at the Deeply Dippy End and Trig from the DOTB End. Woody appeared to start where he left off in his previous spell and continued to bowl tight but unfortunately Trigs bowling in his 2nd spell made Thorpey and Billso appear economical as he repeatedly bowled too short and the young Grace Dieu number 10 repeatedly swatted the ball into the play area. The Grace Dieu number 9 was having an equally good time of it causing problems by being left handed and the score board was all of a sudden ticking along at a good rate.

Woody eventually removed the Grace Dieu number 10 when he bowled one up in the block hole that made a mess of his stumps and Grace Dieu were 170 for 9 with 6 overs to go. The number 11 batsman on his way out to the crease quite frankly had the look of a man who had escaped from somewhere that morning. However looks can be deceptive and he also took a shine to Trig and slapped him for a couple of boundaries. At this point Trig was brought off again and Cooper returned to the attack. The number 9 and escaped mentalist at number 11 got Grace Dieu upto 196 before Woody bowled the number 9 to finish with 4 for 41, Cooper as well finishing with 4 wickets.

The 2s went of disappointed with their performance in the field as there was a feeling that Grace Dieu although short of a par score for the track had got 50 runs more than they should have done and Veteran let the C2 Unit know how poor he thought they’d been. With regular tea lady Russ living it up in Mablethorpe (no news as of yet if he managed to injure himself whilst there) Linda re-took the reigns of tea lady for the week and it was good to see she’d lost none of the old flair for the job with the pitta breads a notable highlight.

The 2s were sent out to bat in the knowledge that on that track that if they batted the overs it was more than likely that they would win the match. For the first time in weeks we had a new opening partnership with Tavare Henshaw opening up with Thorpey. The opening bowlers of Grace Dieu appeared useful if not amazing but both Gandhi and Grice were in resistant mood early on as the 2s scored steadily at over 3 an over. By the time of the first drinks break the C2 Unit were still no wicket down and with 50 runs on the board could be relatively happy with their start although there were a few grumbles about the running between the wicket at times.

With the solid start behind them and the Grace Dieu openers still bowling Thorpey and Henshaw started to push things on a bit with the Thorpedo in particular timing the ball well (and for once not hitting fielders). The score had been moved on to 89 before the first wicket fell in the 22nd over when Grice attempted to hit one over the top and got caught by the train driver at mid off for 27. Next man in was Nige who was in a confident mood after his win at the US PGA the previous week. Yang and Thorpey were able to carry on the good work and continued to take advantage of the ever tiring Grace Dieu opening bowlers. Thorepy went on to reach his 50 having not gave a chance to that point and he and Gok took the score past 100.

The score had moved on to 111 when Grace Dieu decided a change in the bowling might be handy and brought on the escaped mental patient at the DOTB end. His first ball was a rank long hop but rather than whack it into the brook like it deserved Thorpey checked his shot and the ball flew back at the bowler who stuck a hand out and held the catch, the curse of Nelson had struck as Dave was out for 56. In at number 4 was Hockey Shot Foxall and he and the Tiddly began to up the ante as they took advantage of the wayward Grace Dieu change bowlers. The pair had put on 33 in under 4 overs before Foxy became the escapees 2nd victim when he was bowled for 16.

Baz was in at number 5 and the 2s were now above the required rate and he and Gok continued the steady run scoring as the Grace Dieu bowlers continued to tire. The 2s were on 176 and the 1st team (well Cooky and Hursty) had now returned from their victory at Electricity Sports and it was at this time that Ming the Merciless yorked himself to become the 4th man out for a well made 36. The 2s had 6 overs remaining to score the 20 runs needed and Veteran Captain Paul Wood went out to bat. Despite early on looking like he’d never picked a bat up before Woody eventually started hitting the ball and he and Baz were playing the bowling with relative ease. The score had been moved to 195 when Baz played one into the off side for what appeared an easy 2 and what would have been game over. However Veteran had other ideas and once again wanted to hit the winning runs so only 1 was taken. With the scores level everyone on the side was now hoping the skipper got out and he tried his best with a couple of big swishes that were nowhere near the ball but he connected with one eventually that went for 4 and the 2s were home with 6 wickets and 3 overs to spare.

Result: Cosby II win by 6 wickets

Points: Cosby II 24 points, Grace Dieu 7 points

Quote of the Day: At tea the C2 Unit were talking football and in particular Thorpeys allegiance to Forest:

Foxy: Thorpey, you’re a mate and everything but it has to be said your team are a right bunch of f*****g c***s!

MOM: A few contenders with all the batsmen doing their bit with Dave Thorpe the pick of them with 56. However MOM this week goes to Adam Cooper for his 4 wickets for 29 runs on his last appearance of the season.

Verdict: A bit of an up and down game, some of the bowling was good, some of it was terrible, fortunately the batting was as good as its been all season as the 2s got home quite comfortably. 2 more wins for the title!
