Match report MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Syston Town II, Away, Saturday 23rd August 2008

With poor weather leading up to the game and systons problems with the local water table, it was unlikely cosby would find a batting paradise! So winning the toss was going to be crucial in this 'wrong end of the table' match-up! The Skipper called correctly and had no hesitation in bowling.

With no Sampson, Bayliss or Alex White, the 1s welcomed back Simon Whitehead, Rob Dawkins and Ahh Wok and all 3 had a big impact on the game.

Hurst and Dawkins opened the bowling and kept things very tight for the 1st 10 with the score meandering to 22! Then Zheng Zhi dropped the 1st of 6 (yes 6) catches on the day but fortunately it would not prove costly as Matt Hurst started to tear through the Syston top order! With Dawkins bowling very tight at the other end ,the syston batsmen struggled to score and the pressure began to tell.

When Hurst and Dawkins had finished their spell, Syston were 31-5 off 19 overs and Cosby were very much in the driving seat. Howard and Dougherty offered some resistance but they never got the scoring rate above 3 runs per over and the pressure eventually told as Cook bowled Dougherty for 19!

Some spirited batting late on from Howard and Taylor helped Syston to 135-8 but not before Hurst came back on to take his 6th wicket and finish with club best figures of 6-30

After Tea Simon Whitehead and Lewis Todd went out to bat with the instruction of being positive from the off, it would not be easy to chase 137 on the wicket and given Cosby's poor show with the bat last week a good start was vital.

Podge was in no mood to mess about and signalled his intent with a couple of lusty blows but he holed out for 12 and with the score on 15-1 Gok Wan strolled out to join Simon Whitehead!

After dropping 6 catches in the field (he did hold on to 2!) Park Ji Sung batted sensibly, rotating the strike and supporting Whitehead very well. The pair never looked in trouble as Whitehead inparticular began to dominate the bowling with a sucession of boundaries as he passed 50!

It soon became a precession as Syston had no answer to Whitehead and Meredith and Cosby eased home to win by 9 wickets inside 26 overs! Simon finished unbeaten on 68 (13 fours 1 six) and Nigel was 28 no (the partnership 122*, is a new 1st XI 2nd wicket record partnership)

RESULT: Won by 9 wkts

POINTS: Syston Town II (4) Cosby (23)

MOM: Simon Whitehead batted superbly but it has to go to Matt Hurst for his 6 wickets

VERDICT: Much better, excellent all round display
