Whetstone v Cosby Cricket Club Mid-Week XI on Tue 08 Jul 2008 at
Cosby Cricket Club Won by 11 runs

Match report Mid-week team win at last against local rivals.

The mid-week team arrived in the Whetto Ghetto with a full team (just, cheers for playing Coxy) and a veritable army of supporters (well 5 people, Podge’s Missus, Tiger, Rob Dawkins, Nell Dawkins and super fan Ash Pepper). The pitch looked a minefield, the outfield was long so typically we found ourselves batting. Frustrated at previous weeks efforts with the bat Captain Cook promoted himself to opener to push the score along with plenty of singles. He scored 7 off 8 overs although they were all admittedly singles. When Cooky got out we had crawled to 40 for 2 off 9 overs on what was an absolute nightmare of a pitch. Scouse and The Undertaker were batting and when Owen slapped 21 off an over a decent total looked possible again.

However when both fell in the next over (Waggy 24, Owen 30) the traditional mid-order collapse reared its ugly head again. From 81 for 4 we fell to 98 for 8 including 3 run outs, one of which is a contender for comedy moment of the season. Whitey was facing when he got hit square on in the Davina McCalls. Whitey hit the ground before the ball did and landed in his crease. Nick “Systons number 4 wicket keeper” Baker decides to run anyway not realising Alex was in his ground. Baker found himself stranded and ultimately run out. We managed to pick up 1 more run finishing 99 for 8.

We went out to bowl and despite the best efforts of Gray and Irvine a tight finish looked like it was going to be on the cards as the Whetstone batsmen stayed up with the rate. Irvine picked up 3 wickets off his 4 overs for 20 runs and Sheriff only going for 22 off his 4. The fielding was again not at it’s cleverest (although we held most of our catches this week) as people kept attempting run outs with little success and leaking runs.

Steve Pep and Billso came into the attack, Pep bowled 3 overs for 19 but it was the mystery spin of Bills that ultimately decided the match. Off his eventual 3.3 overs he took 5 wickets and there was also a run out in his final over and only went for 11 runs. Whetstone were bowled out for 88 and Bills walked off to the applause of the crowd and team mates (they were all after free ale from Billso’s impending jug)!
