Match report
Classy Odell sets up Winning Draw at Billesdon
MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Billesdon, Away, Saturday 13th June 2009
With the 1st XI in buoyant mood following last weekends win over Electricity Sports it was poor availability once again that threatened to overshadow the positive feeling.
Upon arrival at Billesdon, Cosby were met with a green looking strip with patches of mud but given the glorious weather batting still appeared to be the order of the day. When Damien lost the toss he feared the worst but Billesdon elected to bowl and the skipper was joined by Lion Heart at the crease.
The Billesdon attack started well with the ball swinging and seeming around. Add to this the alarmingly inconsistent bounce and batting was not easy but progress was steady until Damien was triggered for 9. Thorpey followed quickly for 17 and Cosby were 35-2. This brought returning batsmen Odell & Bayliss to the middle and they both looked at ease with the conditions, playing some delightful shots and moving the score on quickly.
The pair added 89 for the 3rd wicket before Bayliss saw Harvey & Roland rolling around in an adjacent field and lobbed one up to deep cover. The good news was Billy got some sun cream on them before they got burnt!
Dan Malins joined Odell and the pair really pushed the score along adding 58 in double quick time before Malins middle stump was uprooted for 26. Odell continued to score freely passing 50 and looking certain for a ton but along with Gok and Whitey Odell was dismissed in the final few overs. His total of 89 was well made and his class showed Cosby what they had been missing!
Cosby closed on 238-8 and were very pleased during the tea interval but knew that only a good performance with the ball would ensure a positive result.
With the Captain declaring himself fit to bowl he took the new ball with Stumpy and the pair kept it tight early on. This pressure enabled the breakthrough when Whitey trapped the Billesdon opener LBW. The second wicket came when Bayliss caught well off Whitey again and this brought the ‘overseas superstar’ to the crease. He took an instant liking to Whitey and smashed him high and long first ball for what Cosby thought would be six! Amazingly it didn’t quite have the legs and Dan Malins was underneath it, he composed himself, caught it comfortably and the team celebrated. Then amazingly Dan dropped the ball!!
The MS Dhoni look-alike started to capitalise and smashed a few boundaries off Whitey so the skipper turned to Phil ‘Big’ Needham and Tom Measures. The pair both bowled extremely well and slowed the scoring and began to get a grip of the game. The grip was strengthened when Big got a wicket thanks to a superbly casual catch on the fine leg boundary by Measures and when the Superstar was well caught by Hurst at Mid Wicket off the bowling of Measures, Cosby were back in the driving seat.
Another wicket from measures, this time brilliantly caught by Billy Blue Gloves, meant he finished with figures of 6-1-20-2 and a well deserved rest. With Cosby on top but needing more wickets to force the win Hurst returned and Cookie was introduced into the attack. First Hurst with two quick wickets, the latter removing the dangerous looking Myles, then Cook with two more left Cosby on the brink of victory. Unfortunately the last wicket proved elusive and Cosby settled for a Winning Draw and 19 points.
RESULT: Winning Draw
POINTS: Billesdon (7) Cosby (19)
MOM: Some notable mentions for Bayliss, Needham and young Tom measures but an excellent 89 from Rob Odell set up the positive result and gave Cosby the initiative.
VERDICT: Very good all round performance with an under strength team.
