Match report C2 Unit scrape a victory against bottom of the table Greenfields

Cosby II vs Loughborough Greenfields II, 8th August 2009

For what seemed like the first time in weeks the sun was shining on the home of cricket as the table-topping C2 Unit welcomed the side currently propping up the division Loughborough Greenfields. With availability for this week very good Veteran Captain Paul Wood appeared to have taken leave of his senses and dropped Grice, Odd Socks and former Chris Griffin wannabe Billso.

With the 2s assembled Frank was presented with the “All the Gear, But No Idea” T-shirt for his tribute last Sunday to the early 90s band Kriss Kross when he went out to field with his Whites on the wrong way around. Woody went out for the toss and further enhanced his reputation for being a useless tosser by losing another. It was no surprise that the Greenfields skipper aka The Wild Man decided bowling first would be for the best on a green Cosby track after the past few weeks inclement weather. Back in the dressing rooms the pre-match naked off was won in spectacular fashion by Hero’s poster tribute to Woody/Richard Fairbrass which was promptly stuck to the dressing room door.

The 2s went out to bat with Nige fresh from his meeting with Bill Clinton opening the batting with Vice. The pair got things off to a decent start with the score being pushed along at 3 an over for the first few overs. The score was heading towards 30 when the partnership started looking in danger when Russells troublesome hamstring went again. Vice continued batting for a couple of overs but in obvious discomfort decided that retiring hurt was the best course of action, so Gok could get the best value for his shots. On his return to the dressing rooms it was pointed out that Russ is 20 years ahead of his dad, as Pete was at least in his 50s before he started getting injured every time he played.

Promoted from the 1st team, Thorpey went out to join the Tiddly at the crease and the pair continued the steady progress started by Russ and Hong Kong Phooey. The pair were not looking in any great trouble against the Greenfields bowling but the score wasn’t rocketing along with Gandhi in particular playing some good shots but finding fielders with most of them. The score had moved onto 65 when Thorpedo was the first man out when he got bowled by Ersoy for 17. Treacle Feet went out to join Gok at the crease and the pair took the score into the 80s before Nige was controversially given out by Big (truly his fathers son) for a well made 34 caught behind. Veteran captain Paul Wood (Boooo) joined Neddy at the crease and the pair hit a couple of boundaries before departing in consecutive balls to Green with Dave hitting one straight up in the air and Fred then dollying one up to Gully.

The 2s were now 4 down (effectively 5 due to the VC’s hamstring) and still didn’t have 100 on the board. The Cooperstar soon became another Green victim when he was comprehensively bowled playing some kind of cross batted swipe from square leg. At this it was decided that Russ would go back in ahead of specialist number 8 batsman Usain. Russ batting with Big offered a stab of resistance to the ever improving Greenfields bowling with Big in particular in clean hitting form slapping a couple of deliveries for 6. However the relief was short lived as Vice became the Greenfields skippers first victim of the day for 15 when he was trapped LBW. Big was soon back in the pavilion with him bowled by Green for 16 by what was by all accounts a pretty decent delivery. This had Usain and Frank (trousers on the correct way around) at the wicket with the score around the 110 mark and still 13 overs to go. Frank was looking in fine fettle with the bat and played a few glorious shots to pick up a couple of boundaries. Rich however soon became Greens 5th wicket when he attempted a cover drive but could only loft the ball to extra cover.

Frank was joined by Trig and the 2 youngest members of the C2 Unit took the score past 133 with some sensible batting. With hopes on the sidelines raised that Trig and Frank would continue with the sensible batting and get the 2s to a decent score Frank committed one of his regular sins when lost his concentration and was run out going for a very risky single. Torchwood Kirby went out to bat with Trig and the score had been taken to 142 before Mike became the last man out for 10 and the 2s had been bowled all out in the 42nd over.

With the 2s having been dismissed for 142 thanks to a combination of a slow pitch, some decent bowling and some very ordinary batting, Veteran Captain Paul Wood (mackem scum) took the 2nd XI into the dressing rooms for a good ticking off. After a rather disappointing telling off from the spectators point of view the 2s went in for the usual high standard of tea. Tea was spent waiting for the football scores to come in (Up the Norwich) and marvelling once again at Franks diet of cakes and meat.

The 2s went out to bowl determined to defend their low total with a bit of a change around in the bowling ends. Big opened up from the Right Said Fred End with Trigger trotting in from D.O.T.B End. The breakthrough was achieved with the 1st ball of the 2nd over when Wincey sent down the longest of hops only for the Greenfields opener to hit it straight up in the air to Richard Fairbrass wannabe Paul Wood who took the catch. This settled the 2 bowlers into a rhythm as the Greenfields batsmen went into their shells. During the early overs the scoring rate crept along at under 2 an over and the 2nd wicket fell in the 12th over when Big was able to bowl the other opener and Grenffields were 22 for 2.

This brought the Greenfields skipper “The Wild Man” to the crease and briefly the scoring rate rocketed as he was able to slap a few boundaries thanks to a few short deliveries from Big and Trig. With the score having jumped from 22 into the 40s and Wincey having bowled his marathon 7 over spell, Dave “Umar Gul” Thorpe was brought into the attack from the D.O.T.B end and put the ball in good areas. Big was till toiling away from the Right Said Fred End but with old foe John “Henshaw” Watson dead batting wickets weren’t forthcoming and so Frank was introduced. The move worked instant magic as with his first delivery the Greenfields Skipper “Wild Man” drove one straight to Nige at cover who used his Mr Miagi fly catching style reflexes to take the catch.

At 3 down the Greenfields batsmen went into their shells once more and further overs of introspection followed. The scoring rate was crawling along slowly but the Greenfields batsmen knew that if they batted their overs out it was more than likely they’d win. The breakthrough should have arrived when Thorpey got the number 5 to dolly a chance to mid wicket but Veteran Captain Paul “Should have gone to Specsavers” Wood grounded the chance, giving him another contender for the drop of the season award (this is beginning to become a 1 horse race). Thorpedo would eventually finish wicketless off his 7 overs and bowled better than his figures of 0 for 35 suggested. In his final over in his Herculean 6 over spell Frank was able to provide the key breakthrough for the C2 Unit when he had Watson caught down the leg side for 26. Truth be told the 2s were probably a bit lucky to pick up this wicket as there was some debate as to whether the batsman actually hit it. However they were probably equally unlucky with Goks dismissal in their innings and enough decisions have gone against the 2nd XI (Dunton) this season.

“Captain Jack” Kirby was brought on for Ben and in his 1st over again was able to provide a breakthrough. Kirbo picked up 2 wickets with the final 2 balls in his first over getting the number 6 caught at cover once again by Gok and then bowling the number 7 for a golden duck. With the score creeping past 100 and 6 wickets down the game was still in the balance and so Veteran brought himself on to bowl his brand of medium pace. His first over we can quickly forget but in his 2nd he was able to pull the same trick as Kirbo and picked up 2 wickets in 2 balls getting the number 5 out thanks to a sharp stumping by Vice and then bowling the number 9 to leave Greenfields needing 35 more runs with only 2 wickets left.

With the game on a knife-edge Veteran brought back Big and Trig bowling from opposite ends to their opening spells to get the game won. A couple of nervous overs passed as Greenfields were able to claw back afew further runs before Neddy bowled the Greenfields number 10 who to be perfectly honest looked a walking wicket. In at number 11 was a youngster who was only able to survive an over or two before Big bowled him to claim his 3rd wicket of the day and bowl Greenfields out 122.

Result: Cosby Win by 26 runs

Points: Cosby II 24 Points, Loughborough Greenfields II 5 Points

Quote of the Day: Dring the Cosby Innings an old couple are sitting in the chat dome (one is in a wheelchair) when Phil hits a 6 into the brook and they promptly leave:
Gok (From square leg umpire): Someone go and look for the ball!

Vice: Don’t worry, Lou and Andy have gone for it!

During the Cosby Innings we were visited for the 1st time this season by Ben Irvine and his girlfriend. Naturally they’re a bit out of the loop:
Mrs Stacky: So what’s happened to Sos then?

MOM: Hard to judge this week with all the bowlers doing their jobs. MOM goes to Nigel Meredith for his 34 runs (innings controversially ended) and 2 catches.

Verdict: A hard fought win against a side who it is hard to believe are bottom. Wasn’t easy to bat on that wicket but it wasn’t as hard as the 2s made it look, shot selection and execution must be improved for the remainder of the season starting next week at Shepshed.
