Match report 27 May 2009 : Mid-week XI secure first victory of the season

Fleckney vs Cosby, 26th May 2009-05-27

The mid-week team rolled up at the unfamiliar outpost of Fleckney for their 2nd game of the season hopeful of a good result against the league new boys. However with middle order regular Ash Pepper away on his jollies everyone was asking the same question “Who would provide the comedy fielding moment?” Cooky lost the toss (yes there was a toss this week) and the Fleckney skipper decided to have a bat.

Things got off to a slightly dodgy start when Fleckneys opener Spence took a liking for the bowling of Whitey and hit him for three sixes in the first over. At that stage it would be fair to say Cosby were a bit taken back. After 3 overs Fleckney were 33 for 0 and the mid-week boys were staring down the barrel. However Cooky foxed Spence with the doosra and Nick “Barry Evans” Baker got his first stumping of the day. From this point Cosby produced one of their best mid week bowling and fielding performances in a long time. All the bowlers put the ball in good areas and the fielding was sharp (other than Woody who touched the ball about twice), highlighted by 2 catches for Hurst and 3 run outs by Whitey, Ben Cox and Billso!!!

The answer to the comedy fielding question was answered when Whitey tried to catch a skier off his own bowling. The ball went up Lego Head got underneath it and then proceeded to wave at it and let it drop literally a yard behind him. It was pointed out that Ash would have got closer to catching it as it would have ended up hitting him on some part of his body.

Anyway back to the bowling Cooky and Steve Pepper were the picks picking up 3 and 2 wickets each. Whitey and Coxy also managed a wicket each as Fleckney were bowled out in the final over for 79.

Hursty and Podge started the mid-week teams reply with Podge looking in attacking form. He raced to 16 including one massive 6 over the longest before he got bowled playing an ill judged defensive shot. The Undertaker went out number 3 and missed nearly every ball he faced early on. However he and Damian went steadily about knocking off the modest Fleckney total. The pair had taken us to the brink of victory with the score approaching 70 when Hursty got caught for 26. Veteran Batsman Paul Wood went out number 4 and managed to get himself caught at cover for a golden duck (thanks for coming) and when Waggy got caught on the boundary in the next over all of a sudden we were 4 down and still needed 10 more runs off 2 overs.

Steve Pep decided he would bat 6 but was soon back in the pavilion making just 1. Whitey won the race to the crease and joined Scouse at the wicket and the pair managed to see the mid-week boys home with 3 balls to spare and in the process secure the first win of the season. Newbold Verdon next week that will be fun!
