Match Report vs Ratby Town II, Saturday 29th April 2006

Tough opposition to kick off the new season was the pre match opinion and those opinions proved to be well founded as the 2s went into their opening match minus Whetton and Clarke who lead last years bowling attack.

The day got off to a bad start as Harrop lost the toss but picked up immediately when the opposing captain put the 2s into bat, much to everyone’s relief. Meredith and White got the 2s off to a solid but unspectacular start. But the real early drama came off the pitch as captain Harrop and his chauffeur George found themselves in the back of a police car accused of attempted abduction of a minor, after asking a youngster for directions to the ground. May I add for legal reasons that these accusations were false but funny nevertheless! George later commented he hadn’t done anything like that for nearly 20 years. (Just kidding folks).

Anyway back to cricket, Meredith fell early for 7, which bought Sanjay Patel to the crease, who went about his task with aplomb. After scoring 46 effortless runs off 59 balls including 2 glorious 6’s he was eventually caught attempting another. This left the 2s 81 for 4 with 21 overs to go.

Podge and new team member Dave Thorpe were at the crease and put on 76 in just under 12 overs with Podge scoring 45 including 2 more maximums and Thorpey a well made 22. The final 7 overs (as it proved) saw some further good hitting from Jonty Bickle (15) and Sausage (24 Not Out), when captain Harrop called them in with 2 overs remaining and the score on 200 for 7. The looks of surprise were evident amongst both sets of players as well as supporters as the declaration was brave to say the least on a good wicket.

After tea the 2 s knew a good bowling performance was needed with Ratby having the extra overs. Ratby started positively and it wasn’t till the 11th over when young Rishi Tank removed the dangerous Cockerill for 18 and then the following over Phil Needham picked up the Ratby skipper for a duck.

After these breakthroughs however the 2s struggled with the ball as Platt and Butcher put on 93 and Ratby appeared to be in the driving seat as Cosby dropped as few chances. When Andy “Sheriff” Gray eventually trapped butcher lbw for 43 and then Tank removed Platt for 57 things were back in the balance at 153 for 4 with 8 overs remainig. After a great catch by Jonty on the boundary of the big hitting Ross, Ratby stuttered with Macleod struggling to get going, but the big hitting Chadwick was the dangerman.

With 2 overs to go the skipper turned to Alex “he dances with men” White who bowled an excellent over going for just 2 runs. Ratby needed 15 runs to win off 6 balls and it proved just too much for them with Chadwick hitting the final ball out of the ground leaving them tantalisingly close on 199 for 6.

Points: Ratby II 9 points.
Cosby II 15 points.

MOM: Lewis Todd

Verdict: Lucky to get out with a draw against good opposition, the declaration was brave, if Ratby had scored 2 more would we be calling it foolhardy?
