Match Report: Cosby II vs Thorpe Arnold II

After a morning of glorious sunshine and an equally glorious looking pitch, a high scoring game appeared to be on the cards for the second team against one of the toughest teams in the division. Unfortunately at a quarter to two the heavens opened and both teams were condemned to spend a couple of hours in the dressing rooms listening to Harrop discuss the forward defensive.

Once the rain stopped and an early tea was taken play was eventually underway at 4 o’clock and the match reduced to 33 overs a side. Harrop won the toss and put Thorpe Arnold into bat on what was still a pretty good looking wicket. Despite the lack of an early breakthrough Cosby were reasonably happy with the start with Duncan Clarke and Michael Whitehead causing some problems. However it was “leg spinner” Roger Cook that eventually got the wicket with a smart catch by Harrop at mid wicket.. Clarke then got in on the act picking up 4 wickets including a great catch at slip by Mark Foxall after Sausage hadn’t been able to hold onto a diving effort. The 2s were well placed with Thorpe wobbling on 89 for 5 with 10 overs left.

However the combination of some aggressive batting by Collington and Gillet and some very poor Cosby fielding in the closing overs allowed Thorpe to finish on 163 for 6. Which was probably 20 more than they would have got if Cosby had held their chances and not given away cheap runs.

The Cosby innings got off to an inauspicious start with openers Foxall and Cook as well as number 4 Steve Bickle all being bowled by Freer inside the opening 7 overs, leaving the 2s 11 for 3.

Sanjay and Podge were at the crease and facing some very hostile bowling from Freer and his opening partner Frost. The pair took the score up to 46 before Lewis snicked one to the keeper for 13 hard earned runs.

Sanjay was looking determined however and when he was joined by Duncan Clarke their was a change in the 2s fortunes. The pair were able to see off Thorpes hostile openers and Sanjay in particular began to pick off their lesser bowlers. The partnership took the 2s to the brink of safety at 100 when Dunc was ran out for 26. Sanjay went onto record his first fifty for Cosby and he looked in control of Thorpes bowlers till he fell for 56. A cameo innings of 23 from Sos and some typical defiance from the skipper saw the 2s to safety, finishing 137 for 6.

Result: Losing Draw

Points: Cosby (7) Thorpe Arnold (12)

MOM: Sanjay Patel

Verdict: Fielding was the difference as Cosby gave away 20 runs at the end of Thorpes innings whereas they probably saved the same amount during ours.
