Match report
25 May 2009 : First XI Stop the Rot Against Sorry Syston
MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Syston Town II, Victory Park, Saturday 23rd May
Cosby entered the bottom of the table clash with no fewer than 6 first teamers unavailable but the firm belief that they were well capable of beating Syston II.
With the enevitable loss at the toss Cosby were asked to bat and given the amount of rain over the previous week it was going to be a tough ask.
Sampson & Hurst opened the innings and started positively with a couple of early boundaries but Sampson fell to a very wide ball for 8. That brought Simon Whitehead to the crease who looked determined to make a contribution and with Damien seeing it well at the other end the pair accumulated runs with relative ease.
During this period the chat from Syston was most entertaining with the Syston Captain constantly criticising Hurst and his Cosby team. The comment 'thats why their bottom' was one of the most humerous and one that would come back to haunt Mr Corbett later on.
The Cosby innings plodded along on a difficult track and with 7 overs to go Cosby were 114-2. Amazingly Mr Corbett felt the need for 6 men on the boundary at this stage and Cosby took advantage finishing on 160-6 with Hurst making 85 and a useful contribution from Meredith ensured a competitive if not excessive total!
During the Tea interval Ben 'Frank' Spencer again displayed some Ako like tendancies whilst eating his sausage rolls he pulled them apart and left the sausage as he 'doesn't like it'!!
Cosby took to the field knowing that it was probably a case of win or lose as 160 was probably 30-40 runs short. But Syston did have history of negative batting at Victory Park but surely with Corbetts aggressive attitude Syston would go all out to beat the 'worst team in the league'?
Incredibly history looked like repeating itself as Cosby bowled and fielded well with Alex White picking up an early wicket. Andy Gray continued the good work with a couple more and Mike White was bowling well from the Pavillion End. It wasn't until the experience of Mills took Sherriff for 22 in an over that Syston showed any real intent.
After Drinks Cookie was introduced into the attack and he quickly had the syton batsmen guessing and looking tentative and all the time the run rate kept creeping up - something had to give.
In the end it was mills who craked, with podge taking a good catch. Cookie took 3 more to finish with 3-36 but it was the arrival of Captain Corbett at no.9 which brought most interest! To be fair to the Syston Skipper he can actually bat which left everyone baffled by his decision to come in at no.9 but it also meant that the game was very much in the balance!
The match was on a knife edge and had it not been for the exceptional fielding of Crouching Tiger Hidden Meredith Cosby could well have lost comfortably. Add to this one of the most brilliant catches ever witnessed at the Cosby Oval and Gok was a worthy recipient of the Man of the Match Award.
Back to the action and the pivotal moment of the match came when the hapless Corbett was run out by VC Sampson. This was greated by great joy as Sampson reminded him, as his face lay on the wicket, 'that's why were bottom of the league'.
Syston then whimpered through the last over or so to finish on 152-8 and claim a well earned losing draw.
RESULT: Winning Draw
POINTS: Cosby (12) Syston (8)
MOM: Nigel Meredith - an example to us all, outstanding
VERDICT: although only 12 points, it was a big result all things considered. We will not finish bottom of this division.
