Match report 1st XI thumped at Greenfields

MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Loughborough Greenfields, Away, Saturday 30th May

On a glorious Leicestershire day, Cosby went into this fixture with no fewer than 8 first teamers unavailable but buoyed by last week’s performance against Syston.

With the sun high in the blue sky the toss was crucial on a flat looking Greenfields wicket and amazingly the skipper called correctly and opted to bat without hesitation. Unfortunately his team didn’t look particularly enthused by his decision as nobody wanted to open the batting knowing how ‘Jordan King likes to hurt people’.

Dave ‘heart of a lion’ Thorpe was the captains pick to join him up top and Damien and Thorpey set about the task well in the early stages. Had Cosby done their homework properly they would have found out that King was not the quickest in the club anymore and new boy Dan Cartlidge had taken on the mantle of aggressor with the new ball very well.

Both King & Cartlidge bowled well but runs were flowing thanks to the flat track, quick outfield and some very harsh wides called by the umpire. The score had passed 50 before Cartlidge floored Hurst with a very quick and straight bouncer that thudded into the skippers left boob. After a rub down play continued and 72 was on the board when Thorpey lobbed one up to mid wicket.

Simon Whitehead then accumulated well but when Mr Freeze was caught & bowled for 64 off the ever varied Andy Clarke Cosby were on the back foot. Wickets then fell on a steady basis with Whitehead, Debutant Malins, Mikey White (first ball), Nick Baker & Ben Croucher all going cheaply. Only Lewis Todd (36) and Michael ‘Trigger’ Whitehead’ (15no) were able to see Cosby through to the end with a useful partnership of 38 which left Cosby 212-8 after their allotted overs.

After an Excellent Tea (surely in line to regain the ‘Tea of the Year’, unless we play Croft on a Sunday!!) Cosby new that early wickets were vital as 212 was unlikely to be enough to defend.

Crouchy opened up with 12 off his first 3 balls! It was a sign of things to come as Trigger struggled to bowl anywhere near the stumps and the umpire looked like Mr Motivator! Cosby bowled poorly and the fielding wasn’t much better. Greenfields were 60-1 off 6 and 109-2 off 14. In fairness to Crouchy, the two balls he removed King and Loveridge with were jaffers.

Mike White and Cookie come on and whilst Whitey gave it everything Cookie bowled like a prat and gave up, giving Rob Moore one of the easiest Hundreds he will ever score. The game was all over and greenfields had reached their target in fewer than 30 overs!

RESULT: Lost by 7 wickets

POINTS: Cosby (9) Loughborough Greenfields (23)

MOM: Matt Hurst, batted well

VERDICT: Abysmal, yet we will play much better and get less points! Relegation will be a certainty with performances like this!
