Match report 23 Jun 2009 : Brilliant Bayliss Bats Cosby to Victory

MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Hinckley Amateurs, Saturday 20th June

The Cosby Oval was looking good for the visit of Hinckley Amateurs but with only 1 win ever against them Cosby new that a hard fought fixture was on the cards. However, with rumours of unrest in the Amateurs camp and Cosby somewhere nearer than usual to full strength there was optimism in the air.

Cosby won the toss and with a good cloud covering the skipper elected to bowl first. Stumpy and the skipper opened up but Damien only lasted one over so Mike White took over. The first ten overs were interesting as the Amateurs scored comfortably at 4 an over but to the amazement / delight of Cosby they managed to give away the first two wickets in Run Outs!

The poor calling continued throughout the Hinckley Innings and Cosby were on top of their game in the field – anything was possible. When Mikey White bowled Kendrick for 41 Cosby new they had a big chance. Andy Gray was introduced and he bowled well keeping the score down and applying real pressure. He finished with 4 for 36 from 11 overs and 2 more run outs meant Cosby had bowled out a team for the 1st time this season.

Amateurs all out for 165

Following tea Cosby set about the run chase knowing that steady sensible batting was needed to ensure 24 much needed points. Unfortunately Hurst was caught for a 5 ball duck in the first over and when Sampson and the in-form Odell followed Cosby were in trouble at 30-3

From this point on the game became all about 1 man / boy – Steve Bayliss. He repelled everything the Amateurs had and batted with great maturity and responsibility. He was assisted along the way by useful contributions from Todd, Thorpe, A White & M White but it was Bayliss who took control guiding Cosby towards the 166 needed to win.

In one innings Billy showed what he was capable of. Maybe his change of personal circumstances has created a more thoughtful, considerate cricketer who is now beginning to learn from past mistakes or maybe it was just his day?

Either way his 76 not out was vital to his team and his talent is clear. Hopefully this is the sign of things to come and hopefully he will begin to see how important he is to the team.

This was an excellent all round performance from Cosby. Bowled well, fielded brilliantly and batted well enough to ensure a 3 wicket victory and claim the 24 precious points.

The win moves Cosby out of the bottom 3 and up to 8th in the table but with tough games to come availability and levels of performance are now more important than ever.

RESULT: Cosby Won by 3 Wickets

POINTS: Cosby (24) Hinckley Amateurs (6)

MOM: an honourable mention for Andy Gray who bowled superbly but no doubt Steve Bayliss was the man of the moment

VERDICT: Excellent all round display
