Match report Deja vu for the 2's

Match Report: Dunton Bassett II vs Cosby II, 2nd May 2009

The Second's arrived at Dunton on the back of last weeks jittery victory against Enderby, where they produced a performance of two halves. With that now out of the system the serious business of beating an always stubborn Bassett began.

Early team news involved 4 changes - Out went Billso, Alex, Dave Ned (injured - no winner of the previous weeks sweepstake) and most depressingly Nigel (back in the firsts) thus robbing the 2nd's of many pleasurable hours of abuse! In came debutant James Lowe, Matt Cox, Mikey (Magnum PI) Whitehead & Boomerang Baker.

After the sad news of the loss of Gok Wan, Vice Captain Wood took it upon himself to raise the spirits with an informative & uplifting reading of the Cosby News' 'Nature Notes' & with these inspiring words ringing in the ears it was time to take to the field. Opening up was 'Big' Phil and last weeks fifth choice - vetern Paul Wood.

Both immediately hit their straps, with 'Big' floating it up there - Billso style & Woody 'swinging it like the sixties' wickets fell with alarming ease, 4 down without any score. A few runs followed but wickets were still falling - the local car washers were obviously keen to get back to their sponges. When the opening pair were rested, Big had another 4 wickets and the excellent VC had 3-3 from 7 overs.

Tom Measures & Mikey Whitehead came in to the attack and continued the good work quickly cleaning up the tail to leave Dunton 24-9 and walking off.
They only had 10 men as one had gone home to fetch his kit. Captain Saus then stepped in and (over)generously offered to wait for the no.11. Ten minutes later (even Bayliss gets to the wicket faster) the game resumed. Dunton now had a couple of stubborn old pros who made life a little more difficult, until Mikey finally bowled one full and straight to close the innings on 52.

Like the previous week Cosby had a small score to chase and all the time in the world to get them. Mikey was sent to the oddly placed scorebox armed with a brand new abacus. Russ & Curtis strolled out to finish things with the minimum of fuss. Things seemed to be going well until Curtis 'odd socks' Holloway got a good one(just a blip!), Coxy followed just 2 balls later (uh oh!), then soon after the 2008 Division 7 wicketkeeper of the year followed (here we go again!). What happened next was pure Deja vu - Baker, Lowe & Saus came and went barely straining Mikeys abacus. The score was now a perilous 20-6 (all wickets falling to a impressive Popat).

Ben Spencer and Woody came together and with Frank playing straight and the 'Mackem Mover' being watchful, Cosby managed to limp to tea with no further loss and just 20 more runs needed.

Fortunately a queue began to appear at the car wash causing Popat & co. an obvious distraction, because after tea they seemed to crumble and within a couple of overs, the 50 was up and only 2 more runs were required. Frank was then triggered by Boomerang, which was hard on the lad who deserved a Not out. Mikey came out to bat with the promise of hitting a six, but ultimately he didn't have to as Baker, who seemed determined that he could still get the winning runs, gave 2 wides to secure victory.

The changing room was a solemn place at the end of the game as Captain Saus was again depressed with the nature of victory & Mikey 'don't touch the hair' Whitehead was uncontrolable when discovering the lack of conditioner in his kit bag.

Result: Cosby win by 3 wickets.

MOM: Paul Wood who was a much needed mature (old!) prescence with the bat and who looked like a young (well younger!) Ken Needham with the ball.

Verdict: The bowling was excellent, fielding was good, batting was again very poor. Although we should have only been chasing half the score we did....it was still only 52 so the 2's can't use that as an excuse for another poor run chase.
