Match report 30 May 2009 :The C2 Unit Win Top Of The Table Clash.

Cosby II vs Shepshed Messengers II, 30th May 2009

The hottest saturday of the season so far was the backdrop for the visit of second placed Shepshed who were looking to take away the C2 units' top spot.

Team news wasn't great with the 1's missing half a dozen players and Matt 'Chris Griffin' Bills AWOL, there were season debuts for Gaz 'Crocodile Dundee' Kirby & Steve Pepper. Also returning were Mark 'made of glass' Foxall and Ben Spencer (promoted from the firsts).

With news that 'Big' had to leave at 6 o'clock skipper Woody had little choice when he finally won a toss but to bowl first on a day where you would want to bat.

Last minute arrivals meant more bad news as there wasn't time for the rousing Nature Notes. But the announcement that due to Mikey Whitehead absence there was a rollover with the '..No Idea' shirt, much to everyones amusement - except Usain who would have to later wedge himself back in to it.

Opening up were Big and Woody with news from the slips that Foxy had already 'tweaked' a quad having a piss. The two made a promising start restricting Shepshed to just 14 in the first 7 overs. Then a catch....drop....catch from 'vice' and by the first drinks break Cosby had made a steady start. Frank had now replaced Marco Gabbiadini and Steve Irwin came on for Neddy. Both were bowling some good stuff mixed in with a few less good stuff & added to this the fielding was starting wilt in the heat, Shepshed started to pick up runs but were hardly blistering and at the second drinks break had gone up to 102 off 30 overs.

Then a surprise choice as Usain replaced Kirbs with the theory that it was 'now or never'. In fairness to the makeshift Billso he did a decent job that wasn't backed up by the ever deteriorating fielding. By the last 10 overs the opening bowlers were back with a few successes including 'Jonty' Henshaws' run out and 'Hero' Coopers' catch but the run rate was edging them towards the 200 mark, which they managed off the last ball of the innings due to another piece of average fielding.

At the close of the innings the skipper was obviously fustrated, (as the stumps can testify) the fileding had perhaps given away 20 more than it should. But in truth 200 was a very average score.

After a brief tea the batsmen were briefed to get out and bat sensibly. This being the sixth game it was obviously the sixth different opening pair of the season with 'Big' going out to bat with 'Vice' and only 45 minutes before he had to leave, it was always going to be eventfull.

The opening stand was fruitfull, Phil finally left for work with a fine 26 to his name and just shy of 50 on the board in double quick time. Then came Coxy (with an ever increasing cheer squad - now up to 2) who began where 'Big' left off, boundaries were flowing at a steady pace as well as picking up singles with ease. Russ was next to depart but with the score on 105-2 off the first 20 overs, the 2's were half way there.

Coxy soon followed, leaving Foxy and Henshaw to get themselves in but try and keep the score moving The next dozen overs were slow going as both new men struggled to get going as the Shepshed attack seemed to tighten up. The levels of nervousness coming from the boundary edge were rising and this came to the fore when Henshaw was run out going for a second which was never quite there. 'Hockey Shot' Foxall then smashed a six but was out soon after, Cooper then did like wise.

This left Woody and Fairbrother at the wicket still needing 8 an over from the last 7 overs. Fortunately the Shepshed skipper had decided to bring back the opening bowlers and the two look-a-likes scampered singles and used the extra pace on the ball to find the boundary, untill all of sudden the 2's were on the brink of victory, needing just 10 from the last 3 overs. Usain deservedly hit the winning boudary to give the C2 unit an impressive win.

Result: Cosby win by 4 wickets.

Points: Cosby 23 points, Shepshed Messengers 11 points.

MOM: A great catch, drop, catch and a decent start with the bat, despite feeling the effects of wearing most of the balls which had past stumps when keeping.

Verdict: Despite having a limited bowling attack and some fairly poor fielding, 200 was a very gettable target. Good contributions from everyone with the bat in a good run chase against a side who will be there or there abouts this season.
